A great find!

When I purchased this book there was no description or review to go by. I've never written a review before, but have found Fawcett's work to be such a great find that I don't want other readers to pass it over for lack of a description. Plot synopsis: The title speaks for itself. The story takes place in NY City in the late 19th Century. Claire Twining is the daughter of a genteel Britishman who suffers heavy investment losses resulting in a decline from middle class standing to impoverished circumstances. Claire vows to climb the social ladder of the NY gentry and the journey is a fascinating one; sometimes comical and at other times sad. You'll find yourself rooting for and against this heroine. This work is a lovely blend of the writing styles of Trollope and Fitzgerald. Enjoy!

an ambitious woman

" an ambitious woman" is almost a small history of the beginnings of new york city. it was written in the 1880's and the florid language is wonderful even though it has gone the way of the dinosaur. it is also obviously dated in it's ideas but still an interesting read.

Wonderful discovery

I could not put this book down! It was written in 1883, during a time in history where an ambitious woman only chance of bettering herself was through marriage. The novel tells the story of Claire Twining, the daughter of an English gentleman who migrated to the United States and was ruined through a series of naive investments. After his death, Claire begins striving for a success of her own. She thinks that success will come to her through a prosperous marriage and being accepted into New York high society, and this is what she strives for, though her conscience sometimes tells her differently.
Though it was written at a time when women's choices were much different than they are now, I think that the modern woman can identify with Claire's struggles. Though she was a bit limited in her options, the lessons she learns are rather universal.
The book was extremely well-written, replete with a descriptive style one doesn't often encounter in modern novels. A fascinating study in human nature. I am so happy to have discovered Edgar Fawcett. I will be reading more of his works.
