Sketches by Boz [Penguin Classics edition]

In bookstores and libraries, literary classics are a dime a dozen. There are so many different editions available of each that the problem becomes one not of finding a good read but of selecting the edition of it that's right for you. Charles Dickens is perhaps the most popular of the past masters. All his books are enormously entertaining, whether he's writing about the tragedies of this world or its travesties. His eye for the ludicrous is faultless; his representation of it in print is perfection. He never fails to paint on the canvass in our mind, with a few simple strokes, a comic character that resembles someone we've met somewhere, sometime in our lives. His characters are so real that he needs to do nothing more than describe their appearance briefly and then let them speak for themselves. They speak with all the dignity and importance we all feel in ourselves, yet they unwittingly disclose for the reader all the foibles we all possess ... and mistakenly think known only to ourselves. Likewise, when introducing tragic characters, Dickens prefers to offer brief but unerringly accurate descriptions of their build, demeanor, and dress, and then allow their own words and actions to speak for themselves. His creations elicit mirth and misery in us without fail as Dickens masterfully plucks the strings of our hearts.
Unlike most writers, Dickens is equally at home in both the short story and the full-length novel format. This is because his novels were serialized in periodicals in their first publications. Only later were they edited for book form. "Sketches by Boz" is an offering of Dickens's first attempts at writing for a living. It consists of 56 passages, most of which can be read in a single sitting of less than half an hour. These are divided into four sections: "Our Parish", "Scenes", "Characters", and "Tales". Of these, only the last contains fiction. The 44 nonfiction accounts are just as entertaining as their made-up brothers. In fact, I found them even more fun to read at times. Dickens only thinly disguised the identities of his victims while lampooning them, and as editor Dennis Walder so rightly points out, many of these descriptions would surely result in lawsuits for libel if they were published about public figures today.
This was my first experience reading a Penguin Classics edition of Dickens, and I was extremely pleased with it. The editor introduced "Sketches" with a few notes of academic and historical interest, a particular one of which I found to be of great interest as it finally answered a question I'd had for half my life: namely, where Dickens had acquired his nickname of Boz. But more important for today's reader of Dickens is the "Notes" section at the back of the book in which Mr. Walder defines Dickensian slang and explains the author's references to people, events, and places of early nineteenth century London. Much of Dickens's wit is lost on today's reader without such disclosures.
One of my favorite ways of reading a classic author is to collect all of his or her works and then read through them at a leisurely pace in the order they were written. I did this with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with the intention of noting how his style developed over the years. I was surprised to find an unexpected benefit of that project: I was transported to those times and felt as I imagine one of Doyle's contemporary fans must have felt as he read each new Sherlock Holmes story. After finishing Doyle, I immediately began collecting Dickens for a similar project. "Sketches by Boz", being a collection of Dickens's first literary efforts, was of course the first in this series. The second Dickens book is "The Pickwick Papers", of which I have the Library of the Future edition. But after reading the Penguin Classics "Sketches", I'm determined to first replace "Pickwick" with the Penguin edition. The Penguin books are reasonably priced and well worth every penny.

See the evolving genius of Charles Dickens emerge in his Sketches by Boz

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is the greatest English novelist. We all know and love his novels. However, most readers do not read "Sketches by Boz" which is an early compilation of articles the budding author penned for various newspapers and journals. These sketches were written while Dickens was a parliamentary reporter in his early 20s.

Wnence does the name "Boz" derive? As a young lad Dickens gave his younger brother Augustus the nickname "Moses" in honor of a character in Oliver Goldsmith;'s classic novel "The Vicar of Wakefield." Young Augustus could not pronounce "Moses" correctly calling himself "Boz". Dickens decided this would be a good name to apply to himself as he submitted the anonymous humorous sketches he produced in profusion in the 1830s. We sometimes foget that Dickens was already an author prior to the ascension of Queen Victoria in 1837.

The Penguin edition divides the lengthy sketches into four sections:

"Sketches from our Parish:; :Scenes of London"; "Characters" and the best section "Tales" which are humorous short stories.

The book is illustrated by George Cruikshank a good friend of the author and along with Phiz one of Dickens best illustrators.

The various tales are of uneven quality. Do not read this book if you are seeking the complexity of a "Bleak House": "Little Dorrit" or "Our Mutual Friend." Do peruse them if you enjoy succinctly and well observed tales and sketches of what it was like to live in London in the 1830s as the city was becoming a vast metropolis filled with interesting characters. I loved Dickens sketches of what a London street scene was like in the bustle of early morning. His stories of life in the theatre were excellent as was his tour of Newgate prison .

If you have not read Dickens I suggest you begin with "The Pickwick Papers" and this apprentice work. Once you enter the magical, dangerous, hilarious wonderful world of Charles Dickens you will apply for citizenship papers in Mr. Dickens literary universe!

Great sampler

I read the Kindle edition of the book; it's a great sampler of classic Dickens without having to do the full-on 400+ readathon that many of his best works require. The most enjoyable aspect of the stories is the historic, authentic feel they give of London in the early 1800's. Dickens's keen eye for detail and his ability to describe it in a lively manner make this series of short stories a true time slip of a book.

The bubbling cauldron of 19th Century English society boils over the edges in these usually funny, always entertaining, often gripping sketches of people and places in London. His nostalgia for places and people being displaced by the economic growth brought on by the industrial revolution is strongest in his sketch "Scotland Yard," and the book is filled with a keen respect for the past without making apologies for its brutalities or injustices.

As with so many things written by Dickens, courting, drunkenness, elopement, hanky-panky, hypocrisy, true love, and human goodness feature prominently throughout. Stories such as "The Election for Beadle" presage the fuller parody of British elections that appears in "The Pickwick Papers," and his derisiveness in "Parliamentary Sketch" brings to bear much of his earlier experiences as a political reporter.

As in all his writing, however, Dickens's strength and power show strongest when he writes about the cab drivers, curates, hackney drivers, omnibus cads, chimney sweeps, circus performers, theater actors, gin shop waitresses, pawnbrokers, prison inmates, invalids, drunks, prostitutes, spinsters, lonely old men, unhappily married couples, abused wives, pensioners, milliners, and "shabby-genteel" people who made up the ordinary walks of life.

This book is a rare combination of humor, history, and pathos, all rolled into one.

Technology stacks matter - Cucumber adoption increased with JVM support

I have used Cucumber for Ruby for several years and have seen it mature in umpteen ways. The options and power that cucumber-ruby brings to the table is immense. All said, ruby stack is still a tiny portion of the applications being developed out there. Java and languages that go on JVM is by far the most popular choice for many firms, enterprise or small scale. Cucumber JVM is a definitely an ambitious project that brought the BDD thinking to the JVM world, bringing the rich and beneficial experience attained in Ruby world. Though Cucumber creators have always cried out to use Cucumber as a collaboration tool and NOT as pure test automation tool, there are still many use cases, where Cucumber is a nice front end layer into test automation frameworks and perceived as part of Test Automation world. The reason I bring that up is the adoption of Cucumber in JVM world was limited because it was scoped mostly in Ruby world. Cucumber JVM with all its support for Java, groovy, jython, jruby, closure, scala etc. attempts to close that gap and now the most popular technology frameworks existing in JVM space work with Cucumber JVM - I see this technology integration an extremely crucial piece for Cucumber to gain popularity and further adoption. Cucumber JVM book addresses the integration points of Cucumber parser with various Java tools and frameworks - I particularly appreciate the IOC(Inversion of control)/ DI (dependency injection) references in the book and also the mentioning of Selenium libraries and how and where they apply. I would highly recommend teams that adopt BDD/TDD/ATDD to buy and read this book as it is very relevant in a "continuous delivery" environment. That said as with any book, there are improvements expected - It would be great to have more "best practices", more tactical guidance towards cucumber applications in "each" of the layers of "testing pyramid". This would help answer many questions that get asked on Cukes google forums. Cheers to Matt and Aslak for staying both technical and process oriented while writing this book.

Like pairing with the creator, the teacher and the programmer

Imagine that you want to learn a new technology or tool. Who would you want to learn that from, and how? For me I’d want to sit down and pair program with the creator (not The Creator, but you get what I mean) of the tool, and then someone who has vast experience implementing this and finally someone who knows this tool well on my platform. Preferable all three together.

This book is exactly that. It’s an opportunity for you to learn Cucumber from Aslak Hellesøy (the creator of cucumber), Matt Wynne that has consulted and trained on the tool for a long time and Seb Rose that have build the Java Implementation.

Now, the important thing to remember about Cucumber is that it’s not about the tool. Specification by example (BDD) is first and foremost a communication and collaboration technique that doesn’t really need a tool. I’ve got a lot out of just “specifying with examples”. But soon you want to verify your specifications and then Cucumber is great choice.

The author stresses this point throughout the book and make the reasons for Cucumber and human-readable tests (as opposed to JUnit test) very clear.

The books consists of 3 parts; the first gives you the basic knowledge about the tool but also the basic understanding of the process and how to use the tool. The second part is a “worked example” that goes beyond the basic. Not only do we get to know more about Cucumber and it’s capabilities but also how to make sure that you are building a structure for you glue code that is maintainable over time. Also - there’s more in this part on the process and what works and not. The final part is more in the form of patterns and recipes and gives you techniques and approaches to handle common scenarios and situations, such as using Dependency Injection frameworks, testing web applications and APIs and running cucumber in a continuous integration tool.

Throughout the book there’s a very nice “this is not that hard really”-tone that I enjoyed throughly.

Even though I’m not a Java programmer (and through the examples in this book, I hope never will be either…. GOD some of it is verbose) I got a lot out of this book. I am a long time user of Cucumber on the .NET platform (SpecFlow as it’s known there), I even built part of the tool on that platform. Still I learned new things, tricks in the tool and ways to work with the tool that I haven’t tried before.

I cannot recommend this book enough. In fact, I’d recommend the book to anyone working with Cucumber, regardless of platform. It’s the best treatment I’ve seen on the tool.

By reading this book you'll come away with a great understanding of the BDD mindset

I bought the original Cucumber for Ruby book and found it a great way to learn the Cucumber style of BDD; the examples were easy to understand but still insightful. But I'm a Java programmer primarily, so I skipped over some of the Ruby-specific stuff. So when this Java version of that book came out and I was offered a copy to review I jumped at the chance to see what was I might have missed in applying Cucumber in Java-land.

As you might expect, much of the material covering the syntax of the Gherkin language is the same for both Java and Ruby, but there was also a lot of new/revamped material not in the original book. I thought the chapter on keeping "Cucumbers sweet" (where the authors extol us to listen to the specs) was good, and the chapter on database testing (a particular bette noire of mine) was also good to see, though perhaps not as in depth as I would have liked. But the chapters on async calls and testing REST services showed how easy it is to put together workable specs for non-simplisitic systems; I started reading those chapters wondering how the authors would piece the thing together, and ended up thinking... "oh, that wasn't that hard, was it?"

Being a PragProg book, I sometimes found the step-by-step guide a little bit too slow; I found myself scouring instead for the various sidebars with their useful asides and insights; the boilerplate of "Now let's do this, now let's do that" was a little bit grating. But then again, that's the PragProg style, and I think it possibly only irritated on this occasion because I'd already read the Ruby book.

Overall, by reading this book you'll come away with a great understanding of the BDD mindset, and if it appeals then you'll have a great headstart in how to apply those techniques to your own Java projects.

Get a clearer view of the real western frontier

These stories of the "wild west" are fascinating portrayals of the real west. I grew up near where some of these stories happened. It gave me a greater appreciation for the tough and determined folks from previous generations.

No longer the hands-on best text in remote sensing

This has been my standard text for many years, but there are many others of similar quality available at a lower cost. Most of the chapter on terrain analysis is no longer very relevant and new tachnologies such as LiDAR and hyperspectral deserve more treatment.

First be seen as a Business Leader, then as an IT Leader

Calling all information technology professionals: read this book, employ its main points, and lead the conversation!

The author is correct in stating "the odds are stacked against [IT] in very specific ways." And, you "must be viewed as a business leader, not just a technical specialist."

As an information technology director, my experience resonates with Tom Catalini's words above--out of the gate, IT is perceived as a group of "techies" that can't communicate, won't fix the problem for good, and are just waiting to say "no."

Early in my career I realized technology is one of many tools on a tool belt ready be used towards an organization's mission. This requires us, information technology professionals, to step out of our technical realm and into the business. Tom realizes exactly that, and advocates his thinking into a short book that every technology professional should read.

Let's face it--those that haven't chosen information technology as their profession should not be expected to fully know, understand, or deploy the never-ending progression of technology. That's our job. It's also our job to educate others, not in anticipation that they will become experts (author's thoughts).

Tom breaks this communication down into three easy steps, and places them into practice in about an hour of reading. In addition, his main points of the book are summarized in a quick-to-reference checklist.

No, not the words; watch them. The person.

As you’re talking,

What do you notice?
What do you see,
What do you feel?
What do you hear?

All too often, you miss the information that is right there in front of you. Here’s why this is important...

I’m not going to cite the “research” that supposdly says “how much people remember when you tell them something,” as the way I feel about statistics is a bit contrarian:

Either you are, or you’re not.

I don’t need to hear that X% of ________ people experience Y results.

I’ve experienced them, am experiencing them, or will experience them.

Or not.

I recently downloaded a book by my “Twitter friend” Tom Catalini.

It’s titled, “Leading the Conversation: 3 Powerful Communication Strategies to Upgrade Your Image and Improve Your Results When Speaking with Business Leaders About IT”

I read it twice, the first time it took about an hour. A week later, I read it again (both times using the Kindle app on my iPhone 6+) in about 25 minutes. Through a journey of 6 chapters (and one great introduction), Tom makes the case for re-thinking not just WHAT you know, but HOW you share what you know, and WHO the people are who need to know it.

If you ONLY read the first chapter...

“The Foundation: Lessons from Larry"

…you’ll earn your money back in what it costs you in cash and time to learn from this book. I immediately re-configured some of the information at www. Time To GET Momentum .com after I read that chapter; You see, I’d realized that I was making it too difficult for people who were visiting our site.

If I were to pick the ONE takeaway reminder, I would say is this:

“Notice people as you’re talking with them."

At the core, someone you’re talking with is wondering one simple (though very complex) question:

“Can I trust you?”

Everything you say, everything you allude to, everything you do during that conversation is either building trust…or compromising it. When you get the chance to share WHAT you know with people who are not as experienced or informed as you are (any of us in the coaching/mentoring world), we need to remember that for a lot of folks “this could be their first introduction."

If you watch them, you’ll observe their engagement level (or lack thereof). When you notice they are “there” with you, you’ll gain mindshare and trust. The moment you notice “you’ve lost them,” it’s time to do something special...

So, when YOU notice the person you’re talking with has “mentally” left the building, who do you do to bring them back?

Erudite.

I would love to have tea with this author as I suspect he is both brilliant and interesting. I had to stop and check the publishing date to see this was not written in the 1800's as that is the writing style. This is a scholarly work and is very difficult to follow. There are easier books if you want to learn Gaelic. If you're already an expert and want to polish your skills, this is the book for you.

I mean, come on . . . . The Title Says It All!!! Great plot, perfect character development and a wonderful twist in the end.

Okay, so it's a reference book and not all that. But it is the best grammer reference we have used in 15 years of home schooling.

Great guide to help you cut the cord!

I have been curious how our life would be without cable. The author does a great job of listing all the alternatives there are on the market right now. And it's so much more than I was aware of. I really like tge approach proposed to cut the cable by baby steps and using the free trial periods of the provider to find if it's right for you and your family. Overall, this is a great book, well researched and thourough on the subject. Well worth reading.

Excellent writing, romantic short stories written with what was acceptable romance in the 16th & 17th century.

A grouping of twelve romantic short stories written during Weyman's lifetime (1855 to1928). With that in mind romance means taking place under the eye of a chaperone and sex being a simple kiss. Being in love seems to be actually just the idea of considering some other person as a possible spouse whether or not they had spent much time together or not. And in many cases after becoming husband and wife, the husband goes about his business while the wife stays home about household business--being society meetings etc. This book has at least one duplicate story that can be found in another book and possibly others.

The writing is excellent as usual, however this book appears reflect a more recent era than many of his books I have previously read. That not being recent by any means since it would still be the 17th century or more precisely 1907.

Most all of Stanley John Weyman's writings contain added words, adlibs, exclamations, poetries, statements, comments, or other sayings written in a different language than American English; i.e., French, Latin, or Spanish oh even possibly Italian or German:

de haut en bas --- French --- top down
vis-à-vis --- Latin --- force by force
Dim Sassenach --- German --- from context to mean.. that the persons didn't understand or speak English and replied in German.

Does what the title says

I am a penetration tester and I found this book is is an excellent guide for assessing mobile applications. The other platform-specific books are great if you want to become a true expert in a specific platform, but this book provides the right amount of information for evaluating an application in a reasonable time frame. Don't be confused by the page counts (which was my biggest concern), I found this book to contain more useful application vulnerability information than the platform-specific books. More importantly, it provides the information you'll want to know, such as how to find the vulnerabilities in the application and in the code, and how to remediate them. The other books are great if you want to find advanced exploits, such as memory corruption attacks, including kernel exploits, but for general mobile application assessment, this is what I'd recommend. I hope they keep this book updated regularly since a lot of the details will be out of date in several years.

Full disclosure: I have not read the Windows Mobile or Blackberry sections.

If you've never tested a mobile application, this is the book to get!

If you're looking for ways to assess mobile applications, this is the book for you. This book is to mobile application penetration testing as the Web Application Hacker's Handbook is to web app penetration testing. The iOS Hacker's Handbook and Android Hacker's Handbooks are more device and OS-centric, whereas this book will give you the methodology to get up to speed testing the applications running on each of these platforms. (There is a small section on Windows Phone hacking as well). It's a good resource to get you from zero knowledge to dangerous enough.

This book does a good job of covering the basics and if you are looking to get started in mobile pen testing this is a great place to start. It has sections dedicated to iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry applications.
