Great guide to knowing your Street Fighters

There are lots of interesting information on each character, such as their origins, allies, enemies, fighting styles, things they like or dislike, and the games they appear in.

In terms of the level of depth, it's not as detailed as what you'll get from wikia pages of course. Each character in the book is presented with a one page profile and a full-page illustration on the other. The beautiful artworks would be one of the main highlights for the book. It's also more convenient to have all the characters compiled neatly (alphabetically) in one book.

In addition to the main fighting characters, the side characters are also included, but with only face cuts and shorter profiles. Nevertheless, it's still quite interesting to see how inter-related the relationships are between the different characters in the Street Fighter universe.

Recommended to Street Fighter fans.

Amazing. This enciclopedia is even better than the first one. Has a nice touch with the 2D sprite for every character in this book. It is up to date to USFIV. I think Udon will make a new version since now we have SFV. I thing that they could do it better with some images like Balrog and Sagat but iy is just my point of view.

Excellent resource for SF fans. It has all SF characters to this date with detailed character bios, their relationships with other members of the cast, and nice artwork. Artwork and information is updated from the previous version and is more visually appealing. No EX characters included, only characters from the official titles are included. All NPCs are also represented. I hope they continue to update it as we get new SF games.

Mr. Berg does an incredible job of breaking down some essential areas of focus for software engineers looking for a boost to their career. It is generally not enough for a software engineer to focus solely on code skills, particularly if they desire to be a valued, 'go-to' employee for their organization. This book will help software engineers of all levels enhance their overall value and general sense of fulfillment in their career. The style of the book is easy to read and understand, as Berg provides valuable examples and insights from his own career.

Here are some of my personal reflections after reading all parts. In part I - ”About you” I found #4 to be really good, very few developers that I know of shows passion that goes beyond coding. #8 ”Don’t hit send” is also a personal favorite since I have a colleague that have a one minute delay on sending emails. After he hits the ”Send”-button it will wait 60 seconds before it’s actually sent. It has saved him from a lot of trouble he claims :) For part II - ”Your Professional Relationships” I really like the opening joke in #10 (that I obviously can’t tell you here). The rubber duck in #15 is another thing that you really have to read! The last part is about ”Your Organization” and how you navigate in such a strucuture. If you want to advance beyond coding you have to have ”political”-skills.

Recommendation

I can really recommend this book, and to the current price it’s a real bargain! The chapters are short, convenient, and quick to read. You get the ”I have to read one more chapter”-feeling! I really like the ”Real-World Tales” where Cory shares his stories. This book is very good reading when you are traveling (but not driving a car I presume :). I will also keep coming back to this book to be remembered of all the tips, it’s easy to fall back into old habits.

Finally, real-life and updated soft-skill (aka political) advice for software engineers!

I have attended Cory's seminars in the past and witnessed first-hand how he so elegantly and systematically breaks down technical complexities into simple and approachable problems that can be solved. In his book, he has now taken this same approach to understanding what it takes to have an overall successful and fulfilling career as a software engineer and technical leader. My career would not be where it is today without the advice in this book. I have seen too many good software engineers fail to survive in software company culture and politics. You are not taught this stuff in University. This stuff comes from the school of "hard-knocks". In case you are not one of the lucky ones who has a sr. manager as mentor from day 1, I suggest you pick up and read this book...twice. This will provide a nice tuck-in for your existing Pragmatic Programmer, Clean Code, and Code Complete collection.

Need proof God answers prayer? Here ya go!

Rosalind Goforth was a missionary in China at the turn of the last century. This book shares how she learned to pray for daily needs and see God answer. In it, she tells how God protected her family during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, then supply her children with clothes upon arriving in Shanghai. It's a small book, but very encouraging to those who wonder if God really does answer prayers for the "small stuff." Read this book, and you'll find that you can't "trouble God" with your requests. He delights to answer your prayers.

I have been blessed to hear from Rosalind Goforth how GOD has answered her prayers. Definitely not always the way we think or would like to have them answered, but always answered. Our GOD is not a genie in bottle, but a Father who loves us and wants what is best for us. You will be blessed.

A jewel among books!

This vintage book is the testimony of Rosalind Goforth. Along with her husband, Jonathan, as missionaries to China in the late 1800s to early 1900s, their lives were often in peril, or at least in strange or unreliable predicaments. God was Rosalind's constant companion, through her faithful prayers.

"...the wonder is not that God can answer prayer, but that he does, when we so imperfectly meet the conditions clearly laid down in his Word."

Set up similarly to a diary, this book chronicles instances of God's own touch and healing power in the Goforth's ministry. Many times throughout the years, Rosalind found that it was only when she fully trusted and relied on God's goodness that the unimaginable feat that they so badly needed would come to pass.

"The slogan of this glorious life in Christ is just 'Let go and let God'."

I personally think this profound little book packs a punch and shares a big message. It reminds all Christians of the glory and power God has in our lives, if we let Him.

Quality book.

This is a quality book and well worth the investment.
I have been a Microsoft Technical Trainer for over 15 years and I have found this to be a high-quality book. I have expertise in MS PowerShell and teach PowerShell classes regularly, however, I am not an SQL admin. I purchased this book to assist in my learning processes for SQL and SQL Administration and it does a very good job at that.

The ideal candidate for this book is an existing SQL administrator with a small to moderate amount of PowerShell experience. The first chapter of this book is a brief overview of PowerShell in general. If this book has one weakness it is that the first chapter alone is probably not adequate for a person who has absolutely no PowerShell or other cmdline experience. In defense of the book, this is not the purpose of the book, there are many other books that provide a good general knowledge of PowerShell.

An existing SQL admin who is wanting to improve their skills and efficiency with PowerShell would be very well-served by this book, I highly recommend it.

This book aims to introduce you to PowerShell and how it can be used with SQL Server. How well does it do it?

PowerShell is Microsoft’s preferred scripting tool, useful for task automation and integration across products. It’s often specified as a tool which DBAs are eager to learn about. With growing numbers of servers, a tool that helps with admin is to be welcomed.

The book is aimed at SQL Server administrators, and might be useful for developers too. To get the most out of this book, some basic awareness of scripting is needed.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Getting Started with PowerShell

The book opens with a brief history of PowerShell, being a replacement for a diverse collection of tools (e.g. VB Script). PowerShell eventually became the tool of choice for automation and integration between Microsoft products.

The chapter continues with a look at the PowerShell environment, both the console and the GUI (Integrated Scripting Environment – ISE) are discussed. The importance of execution policies and how they impact running local or remote scripts is explained. The various versions of PowerShell are listed together with their salient features.

Next, cmdlets are discussed, these form the core of PowerShell, performing specific tasks. The cmdlet Verb-Noun naming convention is described (e.g. Get-Help), which makes it easier to guess a command.

PowerShell providers, which allow access to a data store, are briefly discussed. Extending PowerShell with snap-ins or (preferred) modules is examined. The ability to chain together cmdlets using pipes is noted (similar to Unix).

There’s a useful overview of PowerShell scripting basics, including a table showing the scripting components and their meaning. Saving and running a script is shown.

The chapter ends with a helpful section on where and how to get help, this is of paramount importance to the beginner. The use of partial command-name search is noted.

The chapter provides a very helpful introduction to PowerShell, its environments and usage. The chapter is useful irrespective of SQL Server. Some awareness of scripting/PowerShell is assumed, so it’s not a book for the complete beginner. Some terms are used before being defined (e.g. cmdlets)

The chapter is well written, with useful website links, tables, screenshots, and summary. The chapter has lots of useful tips (e.g. downgrade session version). These traits apply to the whole book.

Conclusion

This book aims to introduce you to PowerShell and how it can be used with SQL Server, and succeeds. The book is well written, easy to read, with useful website links, and screenshots. The book is filled with useful incidental tips, and contains plenty of template code that could form the basis of your own code. Some understanding of scripting in general is assumed.

With all the different versions of the various software mentioned (e.g. SQL Server, PowerShell, Windows, .NET), I found the topic (but not the book) a bit messy. It would have been useful to have included examples of scheduling PowerShell scripts using SQL Server Agent and Windows Task Scheduler. The book’s title should reflect the main versions of software used (i.e. SQL Server 2014, and PowerShell v4).

PowerShell is undoubtedly a useful tool for task automation and product integration, and is a valuable addition to your toolbox. There is much more to learn of course, but this book is a great starting place.

Overall, this is a useful introduction to PowerShell, and its usage for SQL Server. Recommended.

About the Author
Bret Harte (1836 1902) was an American writer whose western stories and poems launched the "local color" school in American fiction.

Kate Greenaway (1846 1901) British author and artist Kate Greenaway grew up in North London and spent summers in the Nottinghamshire countryside. These happy times from her childhood were the foundation of many of her stories. Her illustrations portraying the idyllic landscape as a playground for children dressed in sumptuous Regency clothing offered a romanticized escape from the realities of the ever-encroaching industrialized world. In her costume designs, she combined the influences of her mother, an accomplished seamstress, with those of her father, a master engraver. She studied art in London where she developed a close relationship with printer Edmund Evans (1826 1905). Together they produced more than 150 books. Greenaway s popular illustrations inspired lines of ceramics, jewelry, fabrics, wallpaper, and children s clothing.

Child Queen

An adventure story of nine year old Polly and one of her many personas. Written in a time before political correctness, it may still be good reading for pre-adolescent children. Although some of the words are more advanced than I would think appropriate, this book would make a decent work for an early reader or as a bedtime story, short enough for one session but involved enough for children that have graduated beyond Hop On Pop and Go Dog Go, yet are not quite ready for lengthier stories like Dr. Doolittle and Stewart Little. P-)

A fun short story perfect for bedtime

My children chose this book for bedtime story because the name was so appealing. Once they realized it was a description of children's pretend, they had to know what happened next. The prose remains mysterious until the very end when they better began to understand the setting and the time period.

Especially interesting was the historical magical worldview and treasure digging that was common in 19th century America. For readers interesting in learning about how the magical worldview shaped US institutions, read D. Michael Quinn's Early Mormonism and the Magical Worldview.

Biased but Very Lucid Account of Mary Tudor's Reign

I'm not an historian, but I love reading history. I just discovered Froude and am sorry it took so long for me to find him. I guess you have to have been a history major to have been exposed to him earlier on, but now with the Internet all things are locatable, and I will certainly search for and read other books he's authored.

Mary's reign is a hugely important, vastly complex and under-reported period in English history. The footnotes in my recently-purchased Kindle edition are tucked away in the back, so the narrative flows uninterrupted. It's exciting stuff -- a real page-turner for people who can look past the bias of the author, appreciate the wealth of facts and opinions, enjoy or scan through some of the extended quotations of speeches or writings of major players, and be charmed by Froude's earnestness and sincerity, wit (sometimes unkind), and elegance of style.

Oddly enough, I KNOW I've read many passages of this book before; probably I read them in some later history book which not only cited the same material but even passages which can only have been pure Froude description.

This is not a beach read. It may be impossible for readers not much exposed to 18th, 17th, and even 16th Century English (think Shakespeare and the King James version of the Bible and earlier) to find pleasure as well as information in Froude. For those who can relish all of this, this book is a treat to be savored.

Surprisingly Dry with Odd Formatting

I bought the Kindle version of the book. After having read Henry VII and His Six Wives I decided to get this book. It wouldn't be so bad (still glad I got a book on the topic) but there is very odd formatting that makes pages on end really hard to read. I put the book down about a month ago and frankly don't even remember where I was at with it and am not sure how soon I'll pick it up again. There has to be a more engaging version of the subject matter somewhere.

The Reign of Mary Tudor

I am slowly but surely making my way through this book. I did so want a book about Queen Mary, and I will continue the search. It was a complicated time and this is a complicated book. My heart went out to Queen Mary.

The most frustrating part of the book is losing so much information because there are pages and pages of footnotes that were in Latin, French, and Spanish. I do understand this book was written in the 1800, but those footnotes have peeked my interest.

Anatole France (pseudonym of Jacques Anatol Thibault, 1844- 1924) was the most prominent French man of letters of his time. France's style was precise, elegant, gentle, ironic, and humorous. A dark fable on extremism, gorgeous language.

Orianna Fielding is a designer, author, broadcaster, curator, and retailer. After graduating from Central Saint Martins, London, she worked in graphic and retail design and has appeared on numerous British TV programs in her capacity as an interior designer, such as ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover and Richard & Judy. Her work has been featured in several magazines, including Elle Decoration, Wallpaper, and World of Interiors. She has also written two interior design books: Lofts: Living in Space (Universe), and Modern Eclectic (Mitchell Beazley). She lives in New York City and London.

Moderation in all things including internet use

The way to stop smoking is to stop smoking. The way to get unplugged is to unplug. The question then devolves about how to it if you don’t know how. This book has lots of good advice for those who need to get control of their lives and use but not abuse their electrical devices. I didn’t realize that some people get addicted to the internet and to the iPad and to the smart phone. But they do. After reading this book, I started looking around me. At the car wash, a family sat waiting for their car to be washed. Each member, Mamma, Pappa, and the two baby bears had a hand held device. None of them looked up from the screens during the 15 minutes I was there and of course they did not talk to each other or acknowledge my presence. That’s not right. On the way home, a woman in the street was walking while looking intently at her device. She did not look up as I passed by and I rather doubt she knew my car was there and speeding. The danger is obvious and the danger of driving while looking at your device or texting is obvious and yet I saw people doing it. And come to think of it, I actually saw what orianna fielding (the author) discusses: people taking pictures of themselves and pictures of their meals. Those people seem to need this book to learn how to get their lives back. Unplugged says stop sitting and get active. Take a vacation from the internet. Learn to relax and enjoy your life without checking email or Farsebook and so forth. One size can’t fit all so I have to disagree with some of the advice particularly the advice to use apps and your smart phone to help you get unplugged. The suggestions for vacations are good, but most people can relax on vacation without doing yoga, meditation, spa treatments, Chi Nei Tsang, reiki, Ayurvedic massage, and a Bio impedance analysis. My family had a wonderful stress free vacation at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok (a place highly praised by the author) without using the spa. We just had fun relaxing and watching the boats go by on the Chao Phraya River. We stayed unplugged by having no device with us. You can do the same. And if you can’t, then try this book for suggestions.

It's all a matter of taste, after all

This will not, perhaps, be very helpful to you, future reader, to hear but: in my humble opinion, there is no way to *learn* to like Tolstoy. There's no process of adjustment, no method of accustoming oneself to the prose, the descriptions, the style, the themes. It's either there within you or it's not.
In other words, if you begin "Anna Karenina" and you are not immediately swept up into the story, with its many characters, family tensions, and ornate depiction of Russian society on many levels... If you are ten chapters in and going forward on pure stubbornness... Put the book down. Walk away. This is not for you.
For example: I read in an earlier review that the reader was "bored" by Levin's description of working in the fields with the peasants on his estate. Personally, I find that to be one of the most compelling passages in the entire book. I'm not right while the other reader is wrong, but I will say this: it's a matter of taste. If you are not engrossed by the complexities of this vast and entrenched society, if you do not feel sympathy for Levin, or feel drawn to Anna, or understand the attraction of Vronsky, then do not torture yourself, and move on.
If you're staying, though -- Anna remains, I believe, one of the most interesting protagonists in literature, and precisely because while the reader is almost unwillingly forced to sympathize with her feelings, it is similarly impossible to remove the stigma of blame from her, watching the wreck she makes of her life. Her transformation from the alluring and enchanting woman who so impresses young Kitty, to the sad and scorned woman that Vronsky himself no longer truly loves, in the end, is all of her own doing -- but who among us can say we would have successfully avoided all of her misjudgments?
Contrasted with Anna is Levin, though their lives are intertwined only through friends and relatives and they have no real knowledge of each other -- Levin is Anna's exact opposite. We meet him as an awkward and abrupt, solitary man, with troubled family relations and an unrequited love -- and in the end, after his long journey of self-awareness, we leave him in a place of pure contentment. We warm to Levin and take him to our hearts, perhaps because his choices are the ones we would *like* to think we would make.
If you ask the average American to name a Tolstoy novel, they will generally say "War and Peace", but I've always thought "Anne Karenina" to be the more human story, the more accessible, and perhaps the greater classic because of that. It truly is a matter of taste -- but if it's to yours, you'll have stumbled upon a literary find you'll treasure always.

The Eternal Error

According to Tolstoy, the genesis of Anna Karenina was derived from three specific events: (1) An idea for a story Tolstoy developed in 1870 about a woman who deserts her husband for another man, based, in part, on the life of his sister, Marya; (2) a newspaper story concerning the mistress of one of Tolstoy's neighbors, who, feeling only despair at being abandoned by her lover, hurled herself under a train; and (3) a sentence from Pushkin's Tales of the Balkins ("The guests were arriving at the country house..."), that Tolstoy read by chance one day in 1873. Supposedly, this sentence from Pushkin fueled Tolstoy's imagination to such a degree that he completed a first draft of Anna Karenina in only three weeks.
A novel about the meaning of life and the role happiness does or does not play in it, Anna Karenina is the story of a married woman's adulterous affair with Count Vronsky. As foreshadowed in the book's early pages, the affair ends tragically, for both Anna and Vronsky.
The novel (which Tolstoy's contemporary, Dostoyevsky, considered "a perfect work of art"), also tells the story of Constantine Levin, a gentleman farmer whose lifelong pursuit of happiness and fulfillment culminates, not in his long-awaited marriage to Kitty Shcherbatskaya, but with the advice of a simple peasant about "living rightly, in God's way."
From a few simple, yet melodramatic events (and the depths of a dizzyingly fecund imagination), Tolstoy fashioned a beautiful, profound and enduring novel dealing with stark questions of both life and religious faith as seen through the eyes of the farmer, Levin. Also a morality play, Anna Karenina delves deeply into the damaging effects of society's ostracization, especially regarding the characters of Anna and Vronsky.
Many consider Anna Karenina Tolstoy's most personal work and, indeed, many of the novel's scenes do mirror Tolstoy's relationship with his own wife, Sonya. Levin's courtship of Kitty and his expressions of love for her, written with chalk on a table are reflective of Tolstoy's courtship of Sonya. Even more evocative of Tolstoy, himself, is the soul-wrenching scene in which Levin gives Kitty his diaries to read, exposing his very soul to the woman he has come to love so completely.
The final scenes of the novel, especially Levin's intense search for the answer to the meaning of existence are reflective of Tolstoy's own search, dramatically documented in his beautiful memoir, A Confession, and considered by many to be one of the most truthful, agonizing and soul-searching statements of authentic spirituality.
The publication of Anna Karenina coincided with the end of Tolstoy's life of material and emotional luxury. From this point on, he concentrated on a deeper and more mature quest. Although he would go on to write the beautiful novel, Resurrection, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich, a true existential masterpiece, Tolstoy's career reached its zenith in the character of Anna Karenina and her seemingly irrational embrace of death. Anna's husband, Karenin, is often overlooked, although he is equally compelling; a complex and emotional character who briefly embraces the doctrine of Christian forgiveness in his emotional denial over the loss of Anna.
No doubt the second most famous line of the book is Vronsky's startling realization: "It showed him (Vronsky) the eternal error men make in imagining that happiness consists in the realization of their desires."
Almost epic in scope and poignantly detailed, Anna Karenina represents the perfect balance of drama, morality and philosophical inquiry. How are we to live our lives, the novel asks, when all the illusions we hold so close to our heart have been stripped away? What are we to believe in and cling to?
With its emphasis on drama over polemic, Anna Karenina thus embodies art of the highest order. In its portrayal of man's timeless struggle to make sense out of life while coming to terms with death, both its theme and its characters remain, now and forever, timeless.

A great master

While the format on Kindle2 is not perfect, it's good enough to read easily and for those that like the text-to-speech function, you can listen to it. I can't believe I've not read this before and having it available free for the Kindle spurred me into doing just that. Tolstoy is such a great master. I read once that he worked on each paragraph until it was perfect, then moved on to the next and when he got to the end, the book was finished--no editing. Amazing. Since I don't read Russian I won't get to appreciate that and the translation isn't quite so clean, but still his prose is generally so clear and crisp, it's easy to get lost in the story and spend longer reading than you intended. I truly felt drawn into the Russian society life and could picture the scenes in my mind. I appreciated Tolstoy's ability to verbalize thoughts and emotions from a character's expression or tone of voice, a real skill. It's important to note, however, that this is not as easy reading as many modern works partly because of the more stilted writing style of the period and elaborate detail and partly because of the Russian names and ways of expressing things. Each character seemed to have half a dozen name references, formal, nicknames, etc. and being unfamiliar with the Russian culture, that presented a bit of a challenge to me at first. Still the characters are so vividly portrayed eventually I got the hang of it.

There is no table of contents, but I find that less of an issue in a fiction work that I intend to read straight through. Some paragraphs are split with a line left unfilled and the next not indented, probably a result of its conversion to ebook format, and I found some oddities I expect were typos. Although I was aware of these things, they didn't detract from my absorption in the story, which is an elaborate one detailing not only Anna's love for a handsome Russian officer and all the repercussions of that for her and those around her, but the side story of Kitty, her sister-in-law's youngest sister, who was taken with the same man at first and how her life progresses. It is an epic story in eight parts that takes countless turns as the events unfold and affect the many characters' lives.
