A few rods ahead Carl's attention was drawn to a wide-spreading oak tree, with a carpet of verdure under its sturdy boughs.

An entertaining period piece

Horatio Alger (1832- 1899) made his reputation through rags- to riches tales of impoverished boys who gained success and financial security through hard work and determination. However, by the late 19th century, his social message had lost its attractions to adolescent boys, through the general decline of the Puritan ethic. Alger's tales changed accordingly, enough so that some public libraries reportedly declined to carry his works.
Accordingly, in "Driven from Home" we see themes of criminality, divorce, and financial fraud, although of course only involving villains of the piece. Young Carl Crawford is forced to leave home due to actions of his dishonest step- mother, who has turned Carl's father against him. Through a series of events, he manages to make his way through poverty to a respectable factory position. Uncovering the disreputable history of his step-mother, he manages to save his father from her nefarious schemes to acquire his money for herself and her own son.
While this book is far from great literature, I enjoyed it, finding both the plot and the panoply of characters interesting. The book is a period piece, but not without entertainment value.

Working in a furniture factory can lead to advancement

The hero of this book is a young man of 16 years. He's the son of a wealthy but weak (sick) man. The father marries a wicked woman with a son Carl's age. The Wicked Step-Mother manipulates Carl's dad and is evil and unkind to Carl.
Finally, at age 16 Carl leaves home to make his own way. The step-mother and her son are Delighted. They have plans to disinherit Carl and gain all the property of the dad.
In the meantime, Carl makes his way sixty miles from home. On the way he is tempted to steal but is honest. Carl's honesty is rewarded with a job.
He becomes a worker in a furniture factory. A job, manual labor so to speak, is not a bad thing and he's thankful to have the opportunity to work, earning money. And he saves too, as his expenses are little.
There are bad guys (a safe-cracker) and a thief of course. Eventually both "get theirs"
In the meantime Carl succeeds in his job and is eventually entrusted with more to do for his employer.
I loved 95% of the book. What prevented this gem from the past in getting five stars was that the ending felt abrupt. I wanted more details, and perhaps a bit more of a comeuppance to the step-mother. I'm glad I read it and intend to again. I'd like to know what happened to that gold pen Carl had to leave behind and don't recall that being resolved. As usually Horatio Alger doesn't leave loose ends, so I must have missed it.
I'm glad I read the book. It's a good story.

Alger Scores Again

Another witty, moral tale with lots of action, surprise and yes, coincidence. Alger spins great tales for young readers or anyone interested in the 19th century and how times really were.
