The Best Interface Is No Interface: The simple path to brilliant technology (Voices That Matter), by Golden Krishna

Our love affair with the digital interface is out of control. We’ve embraced it in the boardroom, the bedroom, and the bathroom.

Screens have taken over our lives. Most people spend over eight hours a day staring at a screen, and some “technological innovators” are hoping to grab even more of your eyeball time. You have screens in your pocket, in your car, on your appliances, and maybe even on your face. Average smartphone users check their phones 150 times a day, responding to the addictive buzz of Facebook or emails or Twitter.

Are you sick? There’s an app for that! Need to pray? There’s an app for that! Dead? Well, there’s an app for that, too! And most apps are intentionally addictive distractions that end up taking our attention away from things like family, friends, sleep, and oncoming traffic.

There’s a better way.

In this book, innovator Golden Krishna challenges our world of nagging, screen-based bondage, and shows how we can build a technologically advanced world without digital interfaces.

In his insightful, raw, and often hilarious criticism, Golden reveals fascinating ways to think beyond screens using three principles that lead to more meaningful innovation. Whether you’re working in technology, or just wary of a gadget-filled future, you’ll be enlighted and entertained while discovering that the best interface is no interface.

Review

"If Silicon Valley doesn't read this book, we're all ****ed."
- Doug LeMoine, Managing Director, Cooper

“An irreverent, crazy tirade. So why should you read this book? Because irreverence is precisely what is needed today to get us out of the rut of bad, unintelligible, frustrating design. Because the book is funny, caustic, and insightful. So next time you are feeling low, just open the book to some random page and read for a few minutes. You will start smiling, laughing, and learning. A great cure for all that ails you. Why read this book? Well, because I told you to.”
-Don Norman, Design Lab, University of California, San Diego
Author of  The Design of Everyday Things, Revised and Expanded

“In this amusing, smart, and brave case against our screen-based world, Golden Krishna reinforces his position as one of the world’s foremost thinkers of user experience design.”
-  Martin Thörnkvist, Conference Director, The Conference by Media Evolution

“This essential book will hopefully mark the moment in history when we say ‘ENOUGH!‘ to screen saturation and usher in a more meaningful co-habitation with technology.”
- Kevin Farnham, Founder of Method and Co-Author of  Experience Design: A Framework for Integrating Brand, Experience, and Value

"A mind-bending, thoughtful, life-affirming and sure-to-be-controversial manifesto about how we might significantly change our relationship to the technology that surrounds us."
- Dave Gray, Author of The Connected Company and Gamestorming: A Playbook for Innovators, Rulebreakers, and Changemakers

"Krishna's book is written in a very colloquial and accessible style; at times it reads more like a great argument in a Silicon Valley coffee shop, long after closing time, at a table covered in diagrams scribbled on paper napkins. But that's exactly what makes it worth reading. It's not bland theory, but a lively tale well told by someone with deep experience in the field of user experience design."
 - PC Magazine

A great $6 book
By Hunter Harmon
Make no mistake: This is a sermon. It's not a practical guide. It's not a set of concrete steps to improve. It's the author standing at a pulpit and railing at the evils of the day. The evils are real, and unpleasant. Every designer should read it. And, considering it can be read in about an hour, that's not asking much.

However, for an everyday geek, or programmer, who doesn't have machine learning tools or skills to implement the ideas here, this book is full of lots of "No", and very little "Yes". The author suggests a few tools which are "doing it right", but offers little concrete advice for curing the ills described. So, you're left with an hour or two worth of entertainment, and little more.

In short, this is a short little sermon, which was enjoyable. It's a 5 star book at $6, but a 3 star book at $16. Read it, or better still, find it on sale later. It can wait.

A UX Designer Takes on the Proliferation of Ill-Suited Graphic User Interfaces.
By mirasreviews
Golden Krishna is a user experience (UX) designer, and "The Best Interface Is No Interface" lays out, in 21 short chapters, where he thinks our relationship with computers has gone wrong: screens. AKA "lazy rectangles". "When we saw problems, we slapped an interface on it," he says, which has tended to waste people's time rather than solve the problems. For the first 80 pages, Krishna outlines the problems. Then he talks about solutions, mostly using examples that already exist. The book is not data-heavy or technical, though Krishna quotes many interesting studies. It is written in a conversational style that is easy to read. Krishna is a designer, so there are sleek illustrations. "This book is a collection of founding principles written in a manner to convince, encourage, and inspire."

Krishna comments on the growing list of devices that have illogically been fitted with graphic user interfaces, or screens. He quotes a study about multitasking by Clifford Nass. It turns out that very few people can do two things at once, and the heaviest media multitaskers are the worst at multitasking. And exposure to all of these bright screens suppresses melatonin levels. What to do? Krishna offers three design principles: Embrace Typical Processes Instead of Screens (exploit what people do naturally instead of making them jump through hoops), Leverage Computers Instead of Serving Them (reduce the endless passwords, security questions, form fields to fill, make computers retrieve the information they need), and Adapt to Individuals (use big data to personalize technology).

Krishna doesn't have all the answers. One chapter deplores the internet's omnipresent ads but doesn't offer an alternative to ad-based business models. My concern about "machine input", in which the computer uses your preferences, location, and other data, is that we gain functionality but lose security and control. Krishna anticipated this reaction and dedicated a chapter to the issue of privacy. He advocates simple, transparent privacy policies rather than those interminable documents that no one has time to read or make sense of. He suggests explicit controls on devices for what can be tracked and for how long. Krishna is verbose but entertaining. "The Best Interface Is No Interface" doesn't address design problems beyond screen-mania, but it does a nice job with that problem.

Toward a Screenless World?
By Valle Hansen
Several years ago, I attended a neat speech by a young but awesome UX Designer named Golden Krishna, with credentials ranging from product innovating at Samsung, to designing at Zappos, to writing for major publications. The speech was titled "The Best Interface Is No Interface," and the room was packed--presumably full of user interface designers. It was a great hook.

I loved this speech. It was dynamic, engaging, and completely different from the thinly veiled advertisements for products and processes that seemed to define most of the presentations at South by Southwest that year (every year?). (Exception: the one about the cat video phenomenon. That one was awesome, too, and as timeless as Shakespeare.) This speech was a cut above the rest by no small margin, and I will freely admit that Golden's delivery was as captivating and refreshing as his topic. His Colbert-esque sarcasm and wit mixed with his earnest, sharp intelligence won me over immediately, even if I was, at the outset, skeptical of his thesis statement.

Golden's book thesis, similar to that of his speech but perhaps with time a little more honed and a little more frustrated, is simply this: that "our love for the digital interface is out of control...and our obsession with it is ruining the future of innovation" (p. 4). But he goes beyond the problem of our obsession; he envisions a "screenless world," in which problems are solved and processes are honed without the digital interface.

Using real-world examples that almost hyperbolically yet still truthfully delineate his point and nontechnical language that makes it accessible to non-tech-industry bystanders, Golden appeals to our natural drive to innovate to combat this sense of complacency we've adopted. We're not innovating anymore, he says; we're making apps. We're not thinking about problems, he says; we're "slapping an interface on it." We're saying, "You have located a problem? We will design you a screen (or two or ten or 100 screens)! And then for good measure we will put ads all over all those screens! So you can keep getting more screens that make you click on more ads!"

He's not wrong.

Here's the thing about this book (which, if you haven't already gathered, I love): Golden goes further than just saying, "We need to be more mindful of what solutions need a screen and what solutions need something more." He takes a stand--a bold, maybe heroic stand--that I, as a recreational user of interfaces and also a paid employee in interfaces, am naturally resistant to. Yes, his ideas are new and innovative and neat. Yes, he's funny and sharp. Yes, he provides countless examples--relatable, commonsense examples--that back up his points. Yes, his book makes me think, ponder, imagine...But is NoUI really the future? Can it really be?
