The Gold Standard for Mobile Music Making
By M. Michael
This book is essential, I recommend it to all my musician friends. Please don't let the "For Dummies" name fool you. While it certainly starts out simple enough for a beginner, it's the most comprehensive book on making music with iPhones & iPads I've every seen. Sure, you can probably find some information on YouTube, but, for me, it's worth it to have everything in one place. This book goes beyond the ephemeral nature of current app offerings and dives into more substantial best practices for recording, inter-app audio, music making and live sound that can be applied to any scale and skill-level of musician. Two thumbs up.

Ok for the guy who wants to play covers and accompany himself, but...
By E. Becker
Having been involved in iOS music for the last 5 years I wanted to fill in the missing gaps in my overall knowledge - yes, I know the series is aimed toward complete beginners - but was kind of shocked by some of the glaring omissions, such as Nanostudio and MultitrackDAW in the DAW recommendations section, or the highly useful Audioshare audio utility.

One of iOS' strongest suits IMO is how quickly one can create really novel but musical sounds; signal processing and unusual i/o (both audio and midi) can be played with in such a way that one learns a lot about general theory in regard to these subjects: however, this book does not touch on this area at all... Not even in passing. Rather, it seems aimed at the hobbyist who spends the least possible time and money learning how to use it as a viable recording environment and instead just wants to get the same guitar tone as his favorite player or something.

In short, learned nothing new and in general found it oriented much more toward a guitar-based traditional workflow than the more experimental electronic sounds that iOS music lends itself to so well.
