Dwight Spivey has been a bona fide geek since the age of twelve, kicking off his Nerd Quest with a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 4P. He is the author of many titles on the Mac, iPhone, and Microsoft Office. Good for newbies to home automation

If you are new to the idea of home automation and wanted a reference book to get some ideas on what can be automated at home regardless of cost, this would be a good book for you.
I have been doing quite a bit of home automation projects and already familiar many of the products and options listed in the book.The author seemed to just gathered a bunch of product brochures and published them as a guide. This would give readers the impression that it is a home automation products catalog. Besides, a lot of these products information and ideas are also readily available by searching on the internet.
What's really lacking in this book are the actual use experience of the products presented. Based on my own experience, some of the products listed are really sub-par which I would never recommend. There are also no considerations in the cost factor. Some of the options are very costly which would not fit everyone's budget. There are also no coverage (or hints) on advanced techniques / options for the DIYers. As an example, instead of relying on existing alarm companies and paying hefty fees for an internet enabled alarm, there are technologies available nowadays for us to add an Ethernet enabled remote control unit on our existing alarm system for a minimal fee. The author could have listed such options for the readers to explore further rather than relying on expensive solutions.
I would consider this a good reference book for home automation products. But probably not a great book for those who wanted to find cost-effective do-it-yourself solutions to home automation.

Not an integrated approach to home automation

Do you remember Jeeves? It was a home automated computer system initiated decades ago. It was hardware and software networked in the home with sensors that allowed the homeowner to control lights, water, security and even fetch the closing prices of your stock portfolio and print it out in your den. Well I thought this book was a take off on the original home automation system, that would instruct you on how to build your own home automation system. Unfortunately as the other reviewer has pointed out it appears that this book is a collection of stand alone systems offered by various companies. For me home automation should be a centralized system with one controller or computer system that allows you to integrate add-on sensors and activators that enable you to control multiple systems, monitor them and then provide reports to show you how certain tweaks will affect energy and utility use. I'm not interested in multiple separate systems that do not communicate with one another. The author does touch on the "one platform" subject in Chapter 14 - but it is very brief and merely mentioned canned systems from Apple, Home Depot and others. "Canned" is not what I am interested in. I want to build my own custom-made system that is very flexible and allows me many more possibilities of networking. So for that reason I think the book is OK only. If you are merely looking to say monitor your local weather as a stand alone system then this might be adequate for you.

Good for noobies to home automation; not comprehensive

Spivey gives a lot of suggestions and examples of ways to automate a home - mostly off-the shelf products. It's nowhere near a comprehensive list (on a humorous note, Amazon Fire and the Echo are not mentioned!) as there are many new products rolling out all the time. It doesn't even cover all of the ones that existed when the book was written. For some items, it reads more as a product placement, and it's unclear if Spivey has actually used the materials.
The biggest downside is the potential for hacking. IMO, a "Dummies" book should cover basic tutorials for important aspects of the topic. Because home automation relies on a wireless network, it's essential to set up a good system. While there is some general information, it's not sufficient for protection. Even if the author didn't have the expertise or desire, it would be better to let readers know there is a gold standard, and point them to that resource.
Technophiles will not find anything useful in this book. People who aren't sure where to get started, and who are interested in a more off-the-shelf solution to automation will find some good information here.
