About the Author
Jules Verne studied law but began writing stories and working in theatre as well. When Verne's father discovered his son was writing, he promptly withdrew his financial support. Verne then worked as a stockbroker.His wife encouraged him to pursue his writing, and he became acquainted with Pierre-Jules Hetzel, an important French publisher. Hetzel helped improve Verne's writings, which until then had been repeatedly rejected by other publishers. He died a wealthy man in 1905.

Great book!

Get this book. It is a great book to read. But first get The Moon-Voyage. If you want to read other space books by Jules Verne than get Off on a Comet! and From the Earth to the Moon; and Round the Moon.

Three Men in a Tub

I felt as if I was reading about the Three Stooges in Space. These clueless adventurers didn't seem to be even aware of much of the science of the day as they shoot out of a cannon towards the moon. I found it quite comical and farcical.
As Verne seems to do with much of his writing (Around the World in Eighty Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), he uses the setting to espouse all of his knowledge on the topic at hand, whether it be flora and fauna, or geography, or as in this case, outer space.
The final chapters were a cynical portrayal of people's egotism and obstinacy.
Although I enjoyed the book, I would not rate it as good as his others, especially in terms of "believability". Much of it was too far-fetched, even for the limited knowledge of the nineteenth century.

About the Author
Ambrose Bierce (1842- ca. 1914), American journalist, short-story writer, and poet, was born in Ohio, served in the Civil War, and then settled in San Francisco. He wrote for Hearst's Examiner, his wit and satire making him the literary dictator of the Pacific coast and strongly influencing many writers. He disappeared into war-torn Mexico in 1913.

Udder pus for the soul

This is probabaly larger than the version I bought that had an afterword copyright 1961. I gave away my large collected writings volume when I wanted to impress some thinker with how many times Ambrose Bierce beat him to whatever conclusion he was looking for. The sections of the Signet Classic version I own were called:

Rather than presenting myself as a well-rounded individual, it is my desire to establish myself as an internet expert on the intellectual use of udder pus as a metaphor. Many of the selections in the Devil's Dictionary in this volume relate to politics. I think udder pus relates to politics in ways that are best illustrated by an analysis of the first story in my copy:

A Horseman In The Sky

which takes place on a sunny afternoon in the autumn of 1861 in western Virginia. The guard by the road has joined the Union army and trying to keep Confederate forces from discovering an advance of federal forces. He shoots the horse that his father sat on at the top of a cliff. The horse dropped dramatically over the edge with the father still sitting on it: "Its motions were those of a wild gallop, but even as the officer looked they ceased, with all the legs thrown sharply forward as in the act of alighting from a leap."

People who make soy milk would like consumers to believe that somewhere there is a cow that is sick enough to produce 30 percent udder pus in the milk that Americans would drink. I looked for nutrition facts on udder pus to see if there is some indication of how much the nutritional value of milk would change. The information did not show up, as if no one would even think about drinking udder pus. I don't suppose that people who produce milk now have taste testers who are trained to see if the amount of udder pus in milk is affecting its flavor. I bought fat free half and half this year, which seemed like a much better alteration of a normal food product to put udder pus in, if a food producer actually engaged in that kind of choice, but decisions like that are certain to be a trade secret.

My father did not play a lot of secrecy games with me, but he was a German Reformed Church minister, sort of quick to become E & R to hide the German origin of his American church population, and then quick to form the United Church of Christ to become part of a larger identity. Novel explores turbulent side of literary genius

I found this book to be unlike the other works I had read by Edith Wharton. While her books "The Age of Innocence," "The House of Mirth" and "The Children" focused on the intricacies of upper-class society, "Hudson River Bracketed" is more about the creative personality. Young Vance Weston comes to New York State from a small town in the midwest. Untutored, he has a strong desire to write, and he makes his way in the New York literary world. He forms a strong friendship with a wealthy and brilliant women, Halo Tarrant. This book occasionally felt a bit like a pot-boiler, but it did hold my attention, particularly due to the way that Vance was in many ways a difficult person, yet undeniably a talented writer. There is a sequel (which I have not read) called "The Gods Arrive"

Don't bother

Wharton wrote some amazing stories and novels. This is not one of them. Sentimental. Unlikely. Silly even. You get her inside view of the creative urge -- the story of a man who didn't choose writing. It chose him. But hardly worth the time.

Fun, fast moving adventure novel, which is also a romance. The story is set in 1630. I found it very well written, with a story that kept me wanting to read more, interesting detail (but not too much) and interesting unique expressions (these days, anyway). This novel was written in 1894! After reading this novel, I looked up the author, and was not surprised to read that " his authenticity and attention to contextual detail caused his works...to be widely acclaimed for their romantic content and faithful historical accuracy". [...]. Even better, this is a free book! Wow!

The story begins with a gentleman, while playing cards at his club in Paris, is accused of cheating. Not one to allow an insult like that to go unchallenged, he challenges the young brash fool to a duel. He wounds the young man, and since dueling is illegal and also he has duelled before (and killed 6 men previously), he is brought before Cardinal Richelieu, a very powerful man, who is about to dispense justice. The Cardinal is eventually convinced to give him an option - his life or find and arrest a M. de Cocheforet, most likely through less than upright means, which is distastful, but what choice? The adventure continues from there. And there is a lot of adventure.

I really enjoyed this novel

I really enjoyed this novel. The style of prose forces the modern reader to focus. I can imagine that the author, in writing this in the late nineteenth century decided to apply what he saw as a use of language that paid homage to the 17th century. This adds to the atmosphere of the novel though and for me this book allowed me to imagine a world long gone. The story is a straightforward adventure tale but being told from the perspective of the main character the reader gets to see things from his perspective and moral viewpoint. I particularly enjoyed this because every day, every person in the world views surrounding events from their own perspective and this is coloured by their own history, moral viewpoint, emotions etc. Great book for those who like Alexander Dumas.

A Mild Humor Piece Reflecting Its Period

C.C. MacApp was the pseudonym of Carroll Mather Capps, an American science fiction author. His work mostly dates from the early 1960's.

This brief piece describes what happens when the full force of advertising and media saturation is focused on the casket business. The humor is along the lines of ads that declare "the gift that lasts longer than a lifetime".

It was interesting to me mostly because it really reflects the kind of humor that was considered edgy and outrageous in the 60's. It goes hand in hand with movies and other books that took satirical shots at Madison Avenue. This could easily have found a home in Playboy or Esquire or a similar magazine.

As such it turned out to be an interesting freebie and a perfectly pleasant and cheeky read.

IPads do more than I knew and this book will tell you more than you need to know to set up and utilize all its many features!

I was impressed right from the start of this book as the author gives you step by step directions for when you take your new IPad right out of the box and helps you set it up to use. Starts off by going over all the basic features and how to arrange the many apps you are going to want to install. There are actually certain finger movements needed to perform tasks and he goes over them all. I might add that there are many pictures to help demonstrate what to do throughout the book. He goes over how to multitask on it. He goes over how to set various tones for various tasks. Shows you how to set up password, lock protection.
Now here is a really cool feature that Apple offers for free. He shows you how to set up your IPad, so that if it is stolen or lost, it can be found by Apple. It show right on a map where it is. And you can control the IPad without even knowing where it is. So if it is out of your house, you could actually tell the police where it is and/or erase any important information that someone may hack into. Wow!
The books last section was some advanced set up of things.

Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of cowboys, Indians, and the US Cavalry of the American West in the late 1800s. Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington.
