It is about good, old and infamous Project Management

Agile Project Management with Kanban by Eric Brechner is very different from the last two books about Kanban I have had an opportunity to read recently (Kanban in Action and Kanban from the Inside). It is about good, old and infamous Project Management, something, what many Agile or Lean orthodox people call bad and dead. It briefly presents precise and actionable ways how to apply Kanban as a tool for organizations of different kind and size. Despite being written by a guy who worked for a huge product development organization (Xbox/Microsoft), the book manages to escape insanely popular trend of telling how to scale Kanban, just as consulting business suggests to scale Scrum or Agile. Instead it meets the reality of any software or product development teams, which do not work independently. It comes with an open letter to upper management, which needs to support evolution toward Kanban, as well as with questions and more important answers you may need to convince your peers, working with Waterfall or Scrum in the past.

You won't find here too many details about theories behind Lean and Kanban, but just enough to know where to look for it and why things work better this way. The author, moreover, offers ready-to-use Excel sheets, to calculate just a few, but super important numbers and metrics for your team, so you can track some KPIs and improve based on real data, not just your gut feeling. In the end there’s a big chance your gut feelings will be consistent with data trends, and Kanban will guide you to better predictability, less waste and rework, more evenness and joy of work.

Very concise! Highly recommended!

We had a supposed (certified) scrum master where I worked last but being my first experience with it, I was shocked how unproductive our processes were. After learning what scrum was supposed to be like, I realized how saying you practice scrum and doing scrum are two different things. Our bug tracking software (Fogbugz) included a Kanban board which got me interested in researching the subject which ultimately led to this wonderful book. After reading it, I have to admit I think this is going to be better than scrum. Can't wait to try it out. This book is highly recommended!

I love this book

I love this book, and I _love_ using Kanban. I use it at work, and my family uses it at home to track schoolwork, chores, and even some house projects. It made a huge difference for tracking schoolwork. I evangelize Kanban to friends and coworkers, and when I do, I point them to this book as a starting point. Simply put, Kanban works better than anything else I have tried - it strips away the unneeded stuff and focuses you on what you need to be doing with very minimal overhead. It is very flexible so you can adjust it for your needs once you master the basics, even to the point to adapting to the space you have available for you Kanban board.

Full disclosure: I work on one of the teams Eric referenced in this book. The picture of our Kanban board in the book was very early on when our team was still learning to use the full power of Kanban. We've improved on that early board a bit by optimizing it for our team over the 4+ years we've been using it, but even in the "early learning stages" Kanban worked better than anything else we'd ever tried. Like anything else, the longer you do use a tool, the better you get at using it, and our team is no exception.

Great book for experienced developers

This is a great Java book for experienced developers who wish to learn Java, or for Java developers looking to catch up on Java since 1.5SE. This book covers Java 8 without going into the history of how things used to work in older versions. It also does not waste time explaining in tedious detail how a for loop works or anything like that. This book just covers standard edition features, no enterprise stuff.

If you're new to software development this is not the book for you. If you're looking for Java EE, this is not the book for you.

Excellent intro to Java 8 for developers

I’ve just finished reading Core Java for the Impatient by Cay S. Horstmann. I also own Scala for the Impatient by the same author, and I really loved that book. Having had previous experience with Scala, I was excited to read up on the newer features introduced in Java 8. Maybe it’s because I’m a C# developer professionally, but I’m really impressed with the new Java 8 features.

Horstmann’s books are excellently written for existing developers to quickly become familiar with newer languages and technologies. This book isn’t meant for a beginning programmer to dive right into software development using Java 8, but if you have C#, Java, Scala, or other C-style experience you’ll be set. The pace is excellent and the book flows really well.

While it’s expected that you’re already a proficient programmer, I didn’t get the feeling that it was expected for the reader to understand functional programming. Java 8 introduces a lot of functional style which I’ve seen existing Java developers complain about. I’ve also seen C# developers complain about Java verbosity. While I can’t help people who dislike functional programming, I can say as a C# developer that Java 8 really helps reduce the verbosity of the language.

Before Java 8 you’d have to construct a whole new class that implemented a single method if you wanted to create a Runnable (I have limited experience with pre-Java 8, so forgive me if that’s incorrect). In Java 8, you can assign a runnable to a lambda expression. The compiled code will still contain a one-off class but you as a developer don’t have to worry about those details. This kind of syntactic sugar really makes for more readable and more maintainable code. This is the first material I’ve read which covers Java 8, so I assume Horstmann has covered everything. I actually don’t think Java could have packed anything else into Java 8 that wasn’t covered in this book. It’s hard to believe so much great content was presented in less than 500 pages.

The book is written to appeal to the applications programmer, so Horstmann offers a lot of material such as functional concepts in the Collections and Streams chapters, annotations support, date/time improvements, and internationalization. He doesn’t walk you through creating a parser or an actor system like he does in Scala for the Impatient, but he does give you the necessary information to create a maintainable application in Java. The fact that you’ll learn how to create and process annotations as well as to perform runtime compilation of classes opens a world of possibilities (these sections obviously only touch the surface).

The book also covers Nashorn, a JavaScript REPL that provides access to Java types. I have node.js experience, so this really interests me. I’ll need to investigate the performance implications of running Java code from within this JavaScript environment, but this also opens a lot to an applications developer. For example, if you want to play around with a type in Java’s core library, you can fire up a REPL and instantiate the type rather than going through the rigamarole of creating a throw away project. As a C# developer, I use LinqPad regularly on Windows and Mono’s `csharp` interactive shell on OSX.

Again, I love how concisely the content is delivered. The code that accompanies the book is well structured, allowing the reader to quickly jump between text and the full implementations of the code in the book.

Another thing I enjoyed about this book is how information with short examples are presented in the chapter’s text and exercises are presented at chapter end to give a more hands-on experience. If you skip over the exercises, you’ll still get all of the important material of the chapter.

I would recommend this book to any non-beginner who wants to learn about Java 8.

Great book if you want to master Java 8

I have read the "Core Java" series of books by Cay Horstmann over the years. He is a good author who gets the concepts across clearly and well. So naturally, I got a copy of this book and loved it. I think this book is tailor made for two types of people - one set of people who are learning Java and the other set of people who want to learn more about JDK8 (with lots of new concepts such as Lambda Expressions and Streams).

A work of great beauty, depth & an outstanding literary classic!

Powerful and moving, "The Mill on the Floss" is considered to be George Eliot's most autobiographical novel. Along with "Middlemarch" it is my favorite. Set in early 19th century England - St. Ogg's, Lincolnshire to be exact - this is the tale of gifted, free-spirited Maggie Tulliver and her selfish, spoiled brother, Tom, who were born and raised at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. Eliot's portrayal of sibling relationships is terribly poignant and plays a major part in the novel, as does the longstanding rivalry between two local families - the Tullivers and the Wakems.

From earliest childhood Maggie worships her brother Tom, and longs to win his approval, and that of her parents. However, her fierce intelligence and strong streak of independence bring her into constant conflict with her family. She finds, in literature, the kindness and love she longs for in life. "...everybody in the world seemed so hard and unkind to Maggie: there was no indulgence, no fondness, such as she imagined when she fashioned the world afresh in her own thoughts. In books there were people who were always agreeable or tender, and delighted to do things that made one happy, and who did not show their kindness by finding fault. The world outside the books was not a happy one Maggie felt. If life had no love in it, what else was there for Maggie?" Her nature, complex, passionate, sensuous, noble, intellectualized, and spiritualized, is of great importance to this novel, as is the pathos of her relationship with Tom.

Maggie's early years are brilliantly and unsentimentally portrayed from a child's perspective. The author structures a sequence of childhood's phases, which might appear, at first, to be random vignettes, but constitute an excellent psychological basis on which to build a character and motivation. Eliot once stated, "my stories always grow out of my psychological conception of the dramatis personae." Thus, the author chronicles Maggie's life as she grows from a precocious little girl to a strikingly attractive young woman, tall with full lips, and a "crown" of jet black hair. Her lack of social pretension makes her even more charming and likeable. As she matures, her conflicts with her brother, her family, even with her community, increase significantly. She, herself, feels torn between what is considered her "moral responsibility" and her search for self-fulfillment. Ultimately, she demonstrates honor and courage in the face of the disapproval of a narrow, tradition-bound society.

Parallel to, and intertwined with Maggie's story, is that of families Tullivur and Wakem. After Tullivur loses his mill and social respectability through bankruptcy, (a loss precipitated by a rash lawsuit he undertook), Wakem purchases it all. Mr. Tullivur agrees to stay on as manager. At first he seems resigned to his misfortune. However, within the space of a few pages he is swearing vengeance on the new owner and cursing him. He actually summons Tom to inscribe his curse on Wakem in the family Bible, and makes his son swear to uphold it. The feud becomes violent when Wakem, in the role of proprietor, appropriately corrects Tullivur's management of the mill. Of course the criticism is taken as an insult, and shortly afterward, upon meeting his boss on the road, Tullivur horsewhips him in "a frenzy of triumphant vengeance." Tom sees this uncontrolled outbreak of madness as the result of long repressed hatred. Mr. Tullivur never repents his beating of Wakem. His injured pride and sense of righteous indignation, justify him in his own mind. This lack of forgiveness is also demonstrated by Tom for his sister. In direct contrast, Maggie couples love with forgiveness.

As she reaches adulthood, Maggie finds herself torn between her relationships with three extremely different men: her proud, stubborn brother, Tom; Philip Wakem, a beloved friend who is also the son of her family's worst enemy; and a charismatic but unacceptable suitor. When Tom is thrown suddenly into the role of adult, after his father's death, he becomes obsessed with acquiring social status and power. He attempts to arrange a socially advantageous marriage for Maggie, and when she refuses, he severs ties with her.

I won't spoil your read with any further discussion of the novel's details, especially the dramatic conclusion. George Eliot writes with a keen sense of humor, especially when addressing the grotesque in the human character. Her narrative has great depth, as insight to character and social observations are more important to Eliot than pace and action. "The Mill On The Floss" is deeply romantic - a work of great beauty and a literary classic. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

"The Mill On The Floss" is based partially on Eliot's, (born Mary Ann Evans), own experiences with her family and her brother Isaac, who was three years older than she. Eliot's father, like Mr. Tulliver, was a businessman who had married a woman from a higher social class. His wife's sisters were rich, ultra-respectable, and self-satisfied. These maternal aunts provided the character models for the aunts in the novel. Like Maggie, Eliot was extremely intelligent, energetic, imaginative and unconventional. She did not fit traditional models of feminine beauty or behavior, causing her family a great deal of consternation. Eliot lived with a man who she had not married - a daring enterprise in Victorian England. By the time this novel was published, she had gained considerable notoriety as an "immoral woman."

In this edition writer and critic A. S. Byatt provides full explanatory notes and an Introduction further relating "Mill On The Floss" to George Eliot's own life and times.

A Sophisticated and Engaging Victorian Love Story

The Mill on the Floss, by George Eliot, stands among the greatest nineteenth century British novels. As engaging and readable as anything by Austen or Dickens, this novel adds a degree of psychological and emotional complexity that few novels, of any period, can match.
The novel seems to have the breath of life in it, so that the characters and circumstances seem true and real, even to the modern reader so far removed from the pastoral life of two hundred years ago.
To those who may feel intimidated by the book, don't be. The writing is accessible to any 21st century literate and the controversies of Victorian-era farm life are far more compelling than they may appear at first blush. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.

An autobiographical novel, that tells a good story.

George Eliot's works are varied and wonderful, and although this is not the book that she's most noted for, it is one that she held most dear. It is a "no-holds barred" autobiographical account of her own life. George Eliot's real name was Mary Anne Evans, but she used the pen name of George Eliot because society at that time thought it was not correct for women to be authors, and she wanted her books read on their own merits. In this book we read of Maggie Tulliver who was intelligent, imaginative, idealistic and ambitious like George (Mary Anne) herself. The book goes into the continuous conflict between Maggie and her environment, and the frustrations that she encounters in her search for fulfillment and love. George Eliot bared her soul in this novel, but it also contains her trademark wonderful dialogue and characterizations. I have read all George Eliot's works, and found them all richly and disturbingly illuminating. They certainly do make you think about her and the struggles that she encountered within the moral and religious strictures of her society.

Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine sogenannten Reiseerzählungen, die vorwiegend im Orient, in den Vereinigten Staaten und im Mexiko des 19. Jahrhunderts angesiedelt sind. Besondere Berühmtheit erlangten die in drei Bänden zusammengefassten Geschichten um den Indianer Winnetou. Viele seiner Werke wurden verfilmt, für die Bühne adaptiert, zu Hörspielen verarbeitet oder als Comics umgesetzt.

Karl May wurde am 25. Februar 1842 als fünftes von vierzehn Kindern einer bitterarmen Weberfamilie in Hohenstein-Ernstthal in Sachsen geboren. Ein durch Not und Elend bedingter Vitaminmangel verursachte eine funktionelle Blindheit, die erst in seinem fünften Lebensjahr geheilt wurde. Nach der Schulzeit studierte May als Pro-seminarist an den Lehrerseminaren Waldenburg und Plauen. Seine Karriere als Lehrer endete bereits nach vierzehn Tagen, als die Anzei-ge durch einen Zimmergenossen wegen angeblichen Diebstahls einer Taschenuhr zu einer Verurteilung führte und May aus der Liste der Lehramtskandidaten gestrichen wurde. In der Folge geriet er auf die schiefe Bahn und verbüßte wegen Diebstahls, Betrug und Hochstapelei mehrere Haftstrafen. Von 1870 bis 1874 saß er im Zuchthaus Waldheim. Nach seiner Entlassung wurde er im Alter von 32 Jahren Redakteur einer Zeitschrift und begann Heimaterzählungen und Abenteuergeschichten zu schreiben. Sein stetes literarisches Schaffen war ungewöhnlich erfolgreich und machte ihn bald zum bedeutendsten Autor von Kolportageromanen und Trivialliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland. Seine Abenteuerromane, die an exotischen Schauplätzen im Wilden Westen und im Orient spielen, wurden in 33 Sprachen übersetzt. Durch seine archetypischen Wildwest-Helden Winnetou und Old Shatterhand erlangte Karl May literarische Un-sterblichkeit und wurde zum meistgelesenen Autor deutscher Sprache.

This book is a guide for those who are venturing into the website world, it provided me with tips to help me make my website much better. I wish I had found this book before setting up my website, because it would have been a really great assistant or go to guide. But it has broadened my knowledge of HTTP and websites and all the avenues that we have available.

As a beginner, I could say that I was pleased with the way the explanations were presented in the book. Honestly I didn't think I could come up with an amazing website on my own because of technical reasons and very few resources. But with everything that has been discussed by Malcolm Rockwood, my knowledge has been broadened and the more I got interested, which is really important when looking for a book. It should inspire you. So for starters, this the perfect book, I recommend you to purchase your copy.

A great book a right reader.

I'm a Postgres DBA and recently a new developer asked me for a book on Postgresql as an introduction to that RDBMS. I’ve pointed him to the official documentation, but it was too much for him. This book would be perfect for that developer.
It gives a concise introduction to developing for RDBMS and specifically Postgresql, just enough information to give an idea and even create simple code. The book does not have too many details, and unfortunately sometimes missing explanations. These omissions are understandable in a book of that volume. If you need deeper knowledge and understanding, you will need to go to documentation. But if you need a quick introduction, the book is perfect. It might be useful for a beginner or intermediate level developer. Advanced database users probably need to look for some other source of information.
It was a little strange to me that the book pays much attention to libpq, a library to connect to Postgresql from a C application, but does not have mention JDBC. I think there are more applications using Postgresql developed on Java that on C. Otherwise, the book covers most of the subjects required to begin developing for Postgresql.

a book with lots of well-designed examples

Given the hyped data science and big data framework buzzwords, the topic this book covers is definitely relevant and important to big data practitioners. The author appears to have a long and solid experience in the industry which gave him much practical knowledge on the subject. Having quickly skimmed through the book, my first impression is the book has a broad coverage of Apache Hive, ranging from the basic setup to security, data manipulation and the detailed explanation on the grammar, complemented with relatively straightforward examples.

My current feeling is, as a thin book of 200 pages, it did quite a good job.

Chapters 1-4 are good at describing basics of Postgres and PL/pgSQL

This book leaves me with mixed feelings. Chapters 1-4 are good at describing basics of Postgres and PL/pgSQL, but have somewhat fussy explanations (e.g. exclusion constraints).The purpose, order and content of other chapters are questionable. They cover one tenth of material that possibly can go there... These are not the reference and not the primer (especially the capter 9 on libpq).
