About the Author
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in ‘pulp’ magazines before he died in poverty, he is now widely seen as one of the most significant 20th century authors in his genre. In high school Lovecraft found his contemporaries were accepting and he formed friendships. He also involved neighborhood children in elaborate make-believe projects, only regretfully ceasing the activity at 17 years old. Despite leaving school in 1908 without graduating - he found mathematics particularly difficult - Lovecraft’s knowledge of subjects that interested him was formidable. Throughout his life, selling stories and paid literary work for others did not provide enough to cover Lovecraft’s basic expenses. Living frugally, he subsisted on an inheritance that had almost gone in his last years, by which time he sometimes went without food to afford the cost of mailing letters.18 He was forced to move to smaller and meaner lodgings with his surviving aunt. He was also deeply affected by the suicide of his correspondent Robert E. Howard. In 1936, Lovecraft was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine,19 and as a result he suffered from malnutrition. He lived in constant pain until his death on March 15, 1937, in Providence. In accordance with his lifelong scientific curiosity, he kept a diary of his illness until close to the moment of his death. Lovecraft was listed along with his parents on the Phillips family monument. That was not enough for his fans, who in 1977 raised the money to buy him a headstone of his own inSwan Point Cemetery, on which they had inscribed Lovecraft’s name, the dates of his birth and death, and the phrase “I AM PROVIDENCE,” a line from one of his personal letters.

An excellent horror story

Jervas Dudley was always a strange lad, a dreamer and a visionary. But, when he takes to sleeping in an old abandoned tomb, his dreams begin to take on a weird and frightening tone.

This is another great Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) book. It was originally published in 1922 in The Vagrant, and is an excellent horror story. So, if you like a good horror story, then you should get this one!

Everybody should know who H.P. Lovecraft is. I might not be thought of as Twain, or Shakespeare, but is certainly a science fiction staple.

Everyone On The Planet Needs To Read This Book

Internet security is becoming one of the world’s most crucial hot sports when it comes to the internet. These days now everyone is online consciously or unconsciously so it’s easy to get caught up in the net of really bad people if you are not careful enough.

Just think about it, hacking and being hacked is on the news almost every day. If big corporations like SONY can be hacked, then you should realise just how important it is to protect yourself. But with James book, you can be rest assured that you are covered.

The book is very detailed and covers just about all that you need to know about keeping yourself safe when on the internet but also you will get a crash cause in computer protection. You get to know how to deal with VPNs and Pop-Ups; those can be really annoying.

Great book on how to protect your computer!

Fantastic book on how to protect your computer from viruses, hacking and much much more. Packed with a ton of useful and practical information so you never have to worry about your computer again. I found the book easy to read and very helpful in understanding anti-virus software, and how to use VPN and other internet tools. Also goes into detail on social networking sites and email accounts. Very good info! Highly recommended!

I remember a family member of mine was a victim of someone hacking into his Facebook account. Cybercrime is not uncommon nowadays. This book is a useful tool to helping you to prevent something like that happening from you. Recently, I discovered all kinds of malware after going on the library wifi. This book lays it out pretty well, from spamming to viruses to digital footprint.

About the Author
Itzik Ben-Gan is a mentor for and co-founder of SolidQ. I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

This book from SolidQ aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL functionality. With an emphasis throughout on performance, how does it fare?

This book is both an update to, and a combination of, three previous books (T-SQL Querying – published 2009, T-SQL Programming -2009, and T-SQL Using Window Functions - 2012). New material from SQL Server 2012 and 2014 is discussed, including: Window Functions, the new cardinality estimator, sequences, columnstore technology, and in-memory OLTP. It comes from SolidQ and is written by some of the most respected names in the world of SQ Server.

Aimed primarily at developers and administrators, it offers a detailed view of internal architecture and a comprehensive programming reference. It aims to provide a practical approach together with techniques to optimize code. This is not a book for the beginner, it assumes at least one year's solid experience of T-SQL programming, and tuning basics.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Logical query processing

This chapter opens with an observation about experts - they build their knowledge upon a solid understanding of the basics. So this chapter starts with a look at the basics, logical query processing i.e. the logical order the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Each step is discussed in detail, these steps are:

1. FROM phase (include virtual table for each of the possible types of join)
2. WHERE phase (can’t use column aliases here – SELECT not yet applied)
3. GROUP BY phase (nulls considered equal here)
4. HAVING phase (filter applied to GROUP BY)
5. SELECT phase (2 steps: evaluate expressions then apply distinct clause)
6. ORDER BY phase
7. Apply the TOP or OFFSET-FETCH filter

The chapter continues with a look at further aspects of logical query processing, including table operators (join, apply, pivot, unpivot), windows functions (work with set of data per underlying row, use OVER clause) and UNION, EXCEPT, and INTERSECT operators.

This chapter provides instructive detail on the logical order that the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Helpful examples are provided to illustrate the points made. The discussions are easy to read. Plenty of useful tips are provided along the way (e.g. a CASE expression with no ELSE clause has an implicit ELSE NULL). Useful links to other chapters in this book and to various websites are provided. All these points apply to the whole book.

Conclusion

This book aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL features, with an emphasis throughout on performance. It is an amalgamation and update of 3 previous well-respected books.

All the topics are explained in a very readable and interesting manner. Throughout, there are helpful explanations, screenshots, practical code examples, inter-chapter references, and links to websites for further information. Where possible, references to performance improvements are included. Additionally, there are plenty of useful incidental side tips. Although primarily intended for SQL Server 2014 and 2012, much of the content is applicable to earlier (and probably later) versions too.

This book is not for the beginner. It teaches advanced SQL concepts and techniques, it should take your understanding of T-SQL from around 4 to around 8. It is an ideal follow-on from Ben-Gan’s “Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals”, which I recently reviewed.

The book does have omissions, and this is to be expected, otherwise it would run into several volumes. I would have liked to have seen a section on websites/newsletters that would improve your T-SQL understanding. I would have also liked to have seen some discussion of Big Data and its implications. The Must Have T-SQL querying book

This book is truly a reference book to have. If you're pretty serious about taking your T-SQL to advanced and expert level, this is the ultimate reference book to have. The very first chapter will be a great eye-opening if you never learned about T-SQL logical processing. This first chapter explains why you were getting certain error messages you can't even debug and with which google search can't help either. The next chapter and the subsequent 3 chapters really give you the power and the ability to think like a "pro" and SQL codes just pour from your mind to your fingers and to the keyboard. I just read the first five chapters and I was able to solve so many business problems that I couldn't solve before and about which I couldn't find help online with Google.
This book is packed with excellent expert knowledge to help you grow your skills and think and design solutions for solving business problems.

Superb reference for the SQL Server developer

This book is easily among the finest on the subject.It covers everything a SQL Server developer needs to know to get the job done and get it done right the first time. It even delves into the SQLCLR which is given short shrift in many other volumes. The book finishes off with advanced topics on graph construction and navigation, perhaps not everyday issues for most developers but essential information when you need it.

Rather interesting account of underwater cable systems. Considering the author's non-technical background the book I was pleasantly surprised by how accurate she was in describing the technical aspects of the cabled systems. The political and sociological aspects of the cabled systems were all new to me and very interesting to someone who has spent the last 25 years working on the technical side of underwater cabled systems. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the almost unknown communications backbone that makes the Internet possible.

Why does the everyday user of the internet know so little about how it works and the physical objects in the world that are required to make it possible? Nicole Starosielski's book does an amazing job making these invisible infrastructures more visible and understandable. Moreover, she explores how infrastructures (and their invisibilities) have very profound political and cultural implications. I teach this book to my undergraduates and they overwhelming say it is their favorite read. I'll teach it next semester to my graduate students alongside Andrew Blum's work, Lisa Parks' writing on infrastructure, and a trip to a data center! I can't recommend this book enough!

Long Forgotten But Shouldn't Be

Oppenheim is long forgotten, but in his day, he was the most successful novelist in the world. He wrote and published hundreds of them and was a huge star. The writing is dated now, but his story telling is marvelously complex and any student of writing... those young writers who are looking for examples of really good plotting/story telling... should read at least one book by E. Philips Oppenheim.

About the Author

Holden Karau is transgender Canadian, and anactive open source contributor. When not in San Francisco working as asoftware development engineer at IBM's Spark Technology Center, Holdentalks internationally on Spark and holds office hours at coffee shops athome and abroad. She makes frequent contributions to Spark, specializing inPySpark and Machine Learning. Prior to IBM she worked on a variety ofdistributed, search, and classification problems at Alpine, Databricks,Google, Foursquare, and Amazon. She graduated from the University ofWaterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics in Computer Science. Outside ofsoftware she enjoys playing with fire, welding, scooters, poutine, anddancing.

Most recently, Andy Konwinski co-founded Databricks. Before that he was a PhD student and then postdoc in the AMPLab at UC Berkeley, focused on large scale distributed computing and cluster scheduling. He co-created and is a committer on the Apache Mesos project. He also worked with systems engineers and researchers at Google on the design of Omega, their next generation cluster scheduling system. More recently, he developed and led the AMP Camp Big Data Bootcamps and first Spark Summit, and has been contributing to the Spark project.

Patrick Wendell is an engineer at Databricks as well as a Spark Committer and PMC member. In the Spark project, Patrick has acted as release manager for several Spark releases, including Spark 1.0. Patrick also maintains several subsystems of Spark's core engine. Before helping start Databricks, Patrick obtained an M.S. in Computer Science at UC Berkeley. His research focused on low latency scheduling for large scale analytics workloads. He holds a B.S.E in Computer Science from Princeton University

Matei Zaharia is the creator of Apache Spark and CTO at Databricks. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley, where he started Spark as a research project. He now serves as its Vice President at Apache. Apart from Spark, he has made research and open source contributions to other projects in the cluster computing area, including Apache Hadoop (where he is a committer) and Apache Mesos (which he also helped start at Berkeley).

Prose is well-written, but style is an impediment to learning. Should be called "Reviewing Spark," not "Learning Spark"

The textual components are well-written. However, the book tends to gloss over examples, providing the same, or similar, snippets to what's on the web site instead of providing full, working examples. This was a poor choice for a "learning" title. Instead of being able to work through each example, I found myself having to scroll around trying to figure out what was missing from each snippet, and how to put together working code. Also, the book presents Scala, Java, and Python snippets throughout the early chapters, which is very distracting. I found myself having to mentally context-switch between the three languages instead of being able to following one all the way through. Would I buy it again? Maybe. There are just a few Spark books, and they're all pretty meh. You have to learn it somewhere, I guess.

Start here: Excellent reference for Spark

I found this volume to be an excellent reference book for a Spark learner like me. I am a software developer, and several reviews suggested that this volume was too basic. I shouldn't have followed their advice. I bought an "advanced" book, instead, only to find myself left without material to fill in some important gaps. The information that is available on the Internet is great, but this book brings much of it together in one place. If you want to learn to think like a Spark programmer--*not* the same as thinking like a programmer--this is the place to begin.

Nice Headstart to Spark

I feel this is a decent compilation of the resources available over the internet. That way, it reduces the time needed for getting started with Spark. This book is definitely suitable anyone new to Spark and Big Data Processing. But for someone who has already worked with Spark and faced some challenges, this may not be helpful.

The bad guys make the mistake of kidnapping Jane and son

"The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third pulp fiction novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son.
If you start reading the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in the order that they were written then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. In ERB's formula our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more on a formulaic approach. However, the chief attraction of this edition as part of the Found in the Attic Series was that includes the artwork of J. Allen St. John from the original edition, which is always a joy to come across.
