From Library Journal
Good women, and men interested in women in literature but not familiar with Middle English, will welcome this book. Other translations, like this one accurate and readable, are available; but the advantage of McMillan's is her introduction. She situates the poem historically, compares it to sources and analogues, explains the conventions of the catalogue tradition, and explicates the text, thus rendering Chaucer's work more accessible to general readers. Specialists will find McMillan's views both historically aware and shaped by recent feminist scholarship. An excellent bibliographical essay adds to the value of this first-rate work. Review
Dream-vision by Geoffrey Chaucer, written in the 1380s. The fourth and final work of the genre that Chaucer composed, it presents a "Prologue" (existing in two versions) and nine stories. In the "Prologue" the god of love is angry at Chaucer for writing about so many women who betray men. As penance, Chaucer is instructed to write about good women. The stories--concerning such women of antiquity as Cleopatra, Dido, and Lucrece--are brief and rather mechanical, with the betrayal of women by wicked men as a regular theme. As a result, the whole becomes more a legend of bad men than of good women. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Not Quite Troilus and Criseyde, But Good Enouh
By Jason Goetz
This edition reprints the poem in Chaucer's original English, without editing, which is fascinating. It's nearly a different language altogether, though it is not difficult to figure out if you really know our current version. Most of the stories are taken from Ovid (especially Metamorphoses) and Livy's History of Rome, so if you've read those two this is purely for pleasure and possibly reinforcement. The story of Antony and Cleopatra may be taken from Plutarch, and the legend of Dido is clearly and explicitly taken from Virgil's Aeneid. Chaucer is no plagiarist, as he gives credit to each author from whom he takes his stories.

Shakespeare clearly made reference to this book and adapted several of the stories from it (and from Ovid, Livy, and Plutarch) in his poem The Rape of Lucrece and several of his plays, notably Antony and Cleopatra, Titus Andronicus (where he recreates the legend of Philomela), and in several of his plays he refers to the legend of Pyramus and Thisbe. The Rape of Lucrece is among his strongest works, so its obligation to Chaucer is extremely notable.

Perhaps most intriguing to me about this book is that it confirms one of the major points I made in my Essays on the Classics! series in the first volume: namely that in the classics, despite modern academics' retarded insistence, without reference to fact, that they are biased against women, many of the classics in fact treat women better than men. This is true especially where the classics disparage man as an unthinking and arrogant beast, but it is also true in one like this, where Chaucer sets out explicitly to sponsor the cause of women. Other places where this can be seen are The Odyssey and Dante's Divine Comedy, as well as Virgil's Aeneid.

My favorite of Chaucer's works remains Troilus and Criseyde, which I think is one of the absolute greatest poems ever written and is unfortunately ignored, especially among high schools where they insist on teaching The Canterbury Tales (which is inferior). But this is a good piece in Chaucer's canon, even if it doesn't quite compare.

The finest English novel. -- Arnold Bennett

From the Publisher
Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

From the Inside Flap
Set in the secluded forest community of Little Hintock, Thomas Hardy's The Woodlanders inextricably links the dramatic English landscape with the story of a woman caught between two rivals of radically different social statures. Grace Melbury is promised to her longtime companion, Giles Winterborne, a local woodlander and a gentle, steadfast man. When her socially motivated father pressures her to wed the ambitious doctor Edred Fitzpiers, Grace's loyalties shift—and her decision leads to tumultuous consequences. With its explorations of class and gender, lust and betrayal, The Woodlanders is one of Hardy's most vivid and powerful works.

This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the text of the 1912 Wessex edition and includes Hardy's map of fictional Wessex.

Possibly the best ever book about nature.
By darragh o'donoghue
Hardy is my favourite poet, but I've always found the novels hard-going, too determinedly grim, too schematically fatalistic. For the first third of this novel, I felt the samme way, dutifully admiring the prose, but not really enjoying. Then I left it for a few months, read Proust, and came back to it. I started kicking myself.
It's a masterpiece, an absolute joy for two reasons. Not the characters, who rarely rise above their stock roles - the decent, honourable heroine impossibly torn between passion and propriety; the manly, back-to-nature hero, who could come straight from COLD COMFORT FARM); the impoverished aristocratic cad; his wealthy lover, the promiscuous bored ex-actress golddigger; the bumbling middle-class trader of lowly origins.
What astonishes first is Hardy's plot, related by a weirdly troubling narrator, awesomely intricate in itself, but full of an almost Nabokovian sadism. Situations, desires, hopes are set up and cruelly dashed as the beautiful narrative machinations begin cranking - the man-trap scene had me literally sweating. This irony, however, also has an emotional effect, as it reveals characters trapped by the social, gender and psychological limits the plot symbolises, and forces them into a humanity beyond their stereotype.
Mostly, though, this is a novel written by a poet, and in its animation of the sexually charged woods, the lanes, glades, fields, sunsets, dawns, storms, drizzles, winds, breezes, nature is the book's true hero, full of almost supernatural agency. Hardy's gifts of description, his unearthing the unearthly, the uncanny, the inexplicable beneath the surface, are unsurpassed in Victorian fiction; while his non-didactic anger at social injustice is so much more compelling than the more literal Dickens'.

Perfectly lovely

This is one of my favourite Hardy novels. As some others have noted, it's not one of the "big 5" but certainly worth reading. Hardy's descriptions of the woodlands are beautiful, and I found the ending to be one of his most unpredictable. I wouldn't recommend reading it if you are feeling down, as the ending is sooooo wonderfully tragic (hehe), or if you're not a fan of Hardy's prose style, but otherwise it's a wonderful read. Very personal as well. I got the feeling it was written just for me :)

4.75 Stars -- A Near Masterpiece
By Bill R. Moore
The Woodlanders is not Thomas Hardy's most famous or acclaimed work but was his own favorite among his novels, and many - perhaps most - fans put it in his top tier. This diehard Hardy reader puts it just below that, which is to say it is truly great. Neophytes should read better-known works first, but everyone should stop here quite soon.

Perhaps the most immediately attractive aspect is its vibrant setting. Hardy seems to truly bring The Woodlands to life, describing with a vivid precision that will make it linger in the mind long after reading. It is my favorite Hardy setting other than The Return of the Native's Egdon Heath and many fans' favorite. Most Hardy novels and much of his poetry is set in what he called Wessex - a part-real, part-dream area, based on his native Southwest England, that he made world famous. Perhaps no one equals his profound sense of place; he describes scenes so believably and importantly that they become integral to the story. This is a preeminent example. All the Wessex novels are valuable for showing how a long-vanished world looked and how its people thought, spoke, and lived but none perhaps more so than this. The Woodlands are probably the most rural part of Wessex, which truly says much - a handful of cottages scattered among a thick forest. The real places on which Hardy based the area were almost gone by the time of the book (1887) - had indeed started going even before his 1840 birth - and are certainly gone now, as is nearly every remotely similar place in the Western world. Hardy's descriptive power thus does us a great service by making such a long-lost place seem so real that we not only seem to see it but feel and smell it also. As in The Return, the setting is so important that it is practically a character - arguably even the most important. The woods are described somewhat anthropomorphically and are essential to the plot in many ways. Anyone who thinks such things can never be truly important to a story should read this; literature has few better examples.

Characterization is also strong. This was always a Hardy high point, and The Woodlanders has some truly memorable personages: the intelligent and well-educated Grace, who has in many ways overcome her upbringing's conventional shortcomings but is also a true Woodlands native; Giles, who has genuinely noble feelings and sentiments but is held back in the world's eyes by lack of education and a life tied to the Woodlands; Fitzpiers, who is well-educated, intelligent, and capable but selfish, hedonistic, and in other ways loathsome; Melbury, who truly loves and wants the best for his daughter Grace and has other admirable qualities but whose lack of insight sometimes leads to rash decisions and unfortunate consequences; Marty, a slight, lonely figure who is hard-working and capable of great love but virtually unnoticed by all; the beautiful and lofty but eccentric and essentially selfish Mrs. Charmond; and more. Also, as often with Hardy, there is a band of colorful rustics serving as a sort of chorus. They add considerably to the local depiction, give some much-needed comic relief, and are important in discussing some of the major themes in less overt ways, making them more conventionally palatable and driving them home in a sense very different from the narration's high seriousness but at least as effective. This last is particularly important just before the end, as they get the last word on marriage, the main theme, subtly zeroing in on Hardy's point.

The most interesting character now - as probably then - is Grace. Hardy is well-known for his heroines, and though not his most famous or fascinating, she is very intriguing in her own right. Like many Hardy heroines, she is educated well above most women of her era, which her class and location make all the more notable. Hardy again shows how unfairly such women were treated in an unapologetically sexist society; even with her many acquired and natural charms, Grace is unprepared for many of life's most important challenges because women were simply not given an opportunity. Even those in her position had few options other than marriage, and it is quickly apparent how naïve and ignorant even she is in this all-important area because of the relatively sheltered lives virtually all Victorian women lived.

Marriage and human love relationships generally are the book's main concern; they are variously dramatized and reflected on in a larger sense. This had much contemporary relevance, but what might be called Hardy's philosophical approach also makes it of great universal important. Love is after all probably the most ubiquitous human feeling, and Hardy dealt with it often, frequently focusing on marriage's monolithic regulatory role. He once wrote in his journal that love thrives on propinquity but dies on contact - a claim he often fictionalized but perhaps never as clearly or fully as here. The Woodlanders is a savage yet subtle critique of the marriage institution in which Hardy's own troubled marriage and advanced views led him to lose faith. He later criticized it more overtly in The Well-Beloved and Jude the Obscure, but this condemnation is at least as strong for those willing to read between proverbial lines. More generally, the book paints a very bleak picture of human interaction itself; characters without fail attach themselves to the wrong person, love never being requited. Hardy thought the chances of mutual love reaching full fruition were near nil, and this is perhaps his most startling example. It may be a bit bleak for some, but his point is well made.

Another major theme is class. Hardy had advanced views here also, which showed up again and again in his work, not least in this novel. Grace and her father are rare examples of nineteenth-century British upward mobility; there is much to admire in her concerted education and his hard work, but the book shows just how hard it was to overcome an unfair system that brands one from birth. Moving up increases their money and knowledge but makes human interaction very difficult; they are still looked down on by upper classes, but an understandable pride makes them hesitate about mixing with their own, most of whom are newly intimidated in any case. All this keeps Grace from marrying Giles, her true love, in favor of the aristocrat Fitzpiers, with dire consequences. Giles himself is now nervous about making his love known yet also incapable of returning Marty's more accessible affection. Fitzpiers is immediately struck by Grace but distraught when he realizes her class; unable to overcome desire, he succumbs but finds it impossible to mix with lower classes, much to the detriment of both. Hardy's sympathy clearly lies with the lower classes, and people like Henry James unsurprisingly attacked the book for vilifying the upper classes, who are portrayed as selfish, snobbish, pleasure-seeking, and despicable with few or no redeeming qualities. The conversation between Giles and Fitzpiers when the latter first sees Grace drives in this nail most forcefully - indeed unforgettably; it is one of Hardy's most powerful and thought-provoking scenes -, but it is present throughout in varying guises.

As all this suggests, there is a strong fatalistic streak. Characters seem unable to overcome facts of birth and upbringing and are frequently victims of what might be called bad luck or cruel fate; chance and coincidence rarely turn out well. This is true for much of Hardy's work, and his later epic poem The Dynasts detailed what he called the Imminent Will, a blind force controlling human affairs, which had been implied here and elsewhere. Hardy was profoundly aware of humanity's less than microscopic cosmic significance and had long ceased to believe that life is overseen by any force that is benevolent or sympathetic to people. This can all be gleaned in The Woodlanders. It is not truly tragic like many of his novels, and the ending in particular at least has a sort of equilibrium - especially in contrast to the catastrophic ones he often favored -, though he elsewhere made clear that Fitzpiers will roam again. However, the book has many dark spots, and its thinly veiled social, philosophical, and theological views are bleak indeed.

If all this sounds rather grim or dry, worry not; Hardy knew how to tell a story. Unlike many writers dealing with heavy themes, he always took care to have them arise naturally from a story rather than overwhelming it. He is virtually without the heavy-handedness and didacticism nearly always fatal in such works. His characters are a big part of this; plausible and sympathetic, we recognize our humanity in them, truly feeling with and for them. The plot is also so tight and superbly executed that, looking back, it seems to unfold near-inevitably, though anyone who guessed how specific events turned out would have surely been wrong. This of course plays right into Hardy's fatalism, but it is clear from reading the book just how much later writes owe him. Unlike most Victorian authors handling serious themes, he was supremely entertaining; his stories were not only engrossing but truly exciting, bursting with the kind of twists and suspense then so rare. Even pulp fans could hardly ask for more. The Woodlanders is a case in point. The climax with the deadly trap is especially well-done; readers will be on the edge of their proverbial seats until the surprising outcome. More fundamentally, Hardy's writing is profoundly emotional; he was deeply in touch with the uber-sensitive chords buried deep in humanity's very heart, striking them with power and precision. The Woodlanders is highly moving, shot full of pathos as well as other feelings and thoughts through which Hardy moves us with true artistry.

This is a fine novel that is essential for anyone even remotely interested in Hardy - a true classic deserving more popularity and acclaim. We must not let it linger in the woods.

Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

Mystery and Supernatural Love Stories
By larryloc@ioc.net
Robert W. Chambers is best known for "The King in Yellow", his 1895 horror classic. He returned in 1897 with "The Mystery of Choice".
The highlights of the book are the three Dick Darrel stories; The Purple Emperpr; Pompe Funèbre; and The Messenger. Of the three, The Messenger is the best and also the only supernatural story.
Out of the remaining tails; The White Shadow & The Key to Grief - are okay but predicable; Passeur - is haunting; and A Matter of Interest - is laughable in light of modern paleontology.
The book ends with a four page poem called Eavoi. I am not much for supernatural love poems of the last century.
This is not the haunting madness of "The King of Yellow" but The Messenger, The Purple Emperor, and Passeur make it worth the money.

Miss Visual Elements and Principles of Composition class, again? That’s OK. You can borrow our notes.

Lucky for you, we didn’t miss a single class the entire semester so you’ll find all of the important points explained in the notes, along with the class assignments.

How does a dot turn into a line to create a shape that makes up a composition? We covered that and more. You’ll see in the notes that we went over all of the basic elements of composition—dot, line, shape, texture, & pattern, color, and space—as well as the principles for composing the elements on flat surfaces (paper, canvas, screens) and in three dimensions.

We had some pop quizzes in this class so we put those in the notes too so you can test yourself, even if it won’t count toward your actual grade.

If anything doesn’t make sense in the notes, just go to the class website at design-fundamentals.com. The instructor put extra projects and exercises on the site, a bunch of cool links, recommended reading, that sort of thing. Also, check out  our Pinterest boards at Pinterest.com/DSNFundamentals. You could spend hours looking through it all.

Good luck!

A gem among the giants of Graphic Design! Simply put, this book is a must-read! Each chapter will inspire you, making you smile all the way to the end. Art history students will find this book even more rewarding for it draws upon art giants (see Max Friedman's awesome illustrations) to explain complex design concepts. Visually compelling, funny and rewarding with its helpful exercises per chapter, this book it's definitely a keeper!

One of the coolest parts of my senior year at the Robert Busch School of Design was getting to contribute to this book. It's a genuine and unique approach to the lectures we sit through as students and the doodles we all draw. This book is truly a fun read and a representation of the good times we shared talking about our passion and professions during production. I hope everyone enjoys reading the book as much as I enjoyed contributing to it. Can't wait to see what Roy's up to next!

Peter Rabbit, by Beatrix Potter

Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter. Mischievous and disobedient young Peter Rabbit is chased about the garden of Mr. McGregor. He escapes and returns home to his mother, Mrs. Rabbit, who puts him to bed after dosing him with chamomile tea.

board book story misses the point
By Amanda J
As a new parent, I am coming to learn that it is difficult to buy board books sight unseen, even if it is a familiar story (or perhaps especially when it is a familiar story). This cover to this board book is adorable and that's what drew me in to choose this Peter Rabbit board book over the others. The illustrations are from the original and the story is adapted from the original, but with every every other page or so missing.

In the original, Peter and his sisters are told to go gather blackberries and not to go into MacGregor's garden because Peter's father was made into a pie by MacGregor after being found in the garden. Peter, who is wearing a new coat, promptly disobeys his mother, stuffs himself with vegetables, gets spotted by MacGregor, loses his coat and barely makes it out of the garden alive. When Peter gets home, he is given chamomile tea for dinner. Peter's sisters, who listened to their mother and stayed out of the forbidden garden have a regular dinner.

In the board book, the risks Peter took and the consequences of his disobedience are left out. Peter loses his coat from one illustration to the next, but it's not explained. His sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, though introduced on the first page, never reappear; you lose the comparison between bad Peter who has tea for dinner and good sisters who have a nice full dinner. Also, the board book says Peter has tea for dinner because he's so tired, not because he has a tummy ache from the vegetables like in the original, as well as because he disobeyed his mother and is being punished. This book reads as if Peter is just being chased out of the garden rather than being chased down -- MacGregor's goal is to catch Peter and eat him, but you can't tell that from this book.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit
By Anna M. Ligtenberg
Now that I'm working on my fourth edition of this classic title, I thought it was time to merge the reviews to make comparison easier. Each edition has its own star rating, below, before the review text.

First, the standard recap: Peter disobeys his mother and sneaks into Mr MacGregor's garden, despite knowing that his father ended up in a pie. Spotted and chased, Peter barely escapes and returns home wet and sick and is dosed with camomile tea. (I have yet to find a version that's so Americanized that it's spelled chamomile, which I think is a cool detail.) His siblings feast on bread and milk and blackberries.

ISBN 1403753911 The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Based on the original art and story) 4 stars - Board book edition. Very small, about 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, excellent for taking along. In this edition, it's spelled McGregor. Not that it matters. This edition doesn't mention Peter's father's end as pie filling, a plus for the squeamish or over-sensitive. Or vegetarian. In this version, the clothes Peter loses are put to use by Mr McGregor as a scarecrow. Mother wonders about his clothes, but no fuss is made. And, of course, Peter feels unwell and is put to bed and given some tea (just tea, not camomile tea). Cute, great for little ones and the text hits all the relevant points. The illustrations are a bit on the dark side, and are a bit small.

ISBN 1569870217 The Tale of Peter Rabbit (3 stars) - Hardcover edition. This is the basic story with few frills. The illustrations are average and have nothing in the way of surprises. Not a bad book, but certainly not a great re-telling of this tale.

ISBN 1569870675 The Tale of Peter Rabbit (5 stars) - This copy is a hardcover, most suitable to children whose little fingers can handle the pages. It's also 24 pages long - just long enough for beginning readers. Father still ends up in a pie, Peter still disobeys his mother and goes into Mr MacGregor's garden. The chase in this book is better written than 1569870217 (below), with a mention of Peter's cousin, Benjamin Bunny, as a nice way to introduce your children to other Potter books. Peter still ends up barely escaping, losing all his clothes to Mr MacGregor, and arriving home sick. This copy has more detail, and much nicer illustrations than others. Peter, when caught up in the gooseberry net, or with a tear in his eye as he tries to ask directions of the mouse, are wonderfully done. I'd never have thought there could be such a difference between various copies of the same story, but you learn something new every day - unlike Peter, who just can't seem to learn and has lost his second set of clothing in a fortnight (nice detail)!

ISBN 0723244324 The Tale of Peter Rabbit Story Board Book (Potter) (4 stars) - Board book binding, best for very young children whose fingers can't manipulate paper pages easily. There are a couple differences in this book: Father and his ignoble end as pie filling aren't mentioned. The fact that Peter returns home sick is left out, so his mother merely puts him to bed with camomile tea for no apparent reason and no fuss is made over his missing jacket. This version is greatly abridged, but is an okay introduction for little ones. The illustrations are full of lots of details and are very much on the pastel side, which I don't like, but that's common with Potter's tales.

Very interesting but too short
By Guang Wu
This is an interesting story, but it is too short. When I tried to read this story in comparison with Italian version, there are words regarding garden I do not know both in English and Italian.

On the other hand, I am impressed by the author's imagination!

Excellent Overview of Security
By Bob Monroe
I read and review about 30 books a year on average, plus spend most of my days researching and writing about digital security. I've been doing this routine since 1989 so I have a so-so understanding of cyber security. Security in Computing took me by surprise since it looked like the average security 101 book I read way too often. This book is nothing like any security book I've read before except a few dissertation pieces I've picked up.

The 910 page book is filled with heavy research and plenty of great real world examples. One of the first things I noticed was that many of the references were from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s. This tells me that the authors went back to old school style and not just internet searches for content. If you do nothing else, get this book just for the bibliography. It is amazing because it is filled with old ideas that we still haven't learned in security.

From a depth standpoint, this book should be mandatory reading for anyone after they obtain their CISSP. The Pfleegers and Margulies do a great job of presenting deeper understandings of security concepts along with pictures and examples from recent security failures. They stick to the basics of confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) but build off of those to show the reader how those concepts extend to a much wider field of study.

This is not a classroom textbook, this is a manual on digital security with all the juicy stories that didn't make the headlines and all the original papers written before blogs existed. You will find exercises at the end of each chapter that are fairly well written but it's kind of difficult to complete the exercises when your jaw is still on the floor. There is just too much great information in each page not to laugh (or cry) to yourself about how far we haven’t come in this field.

Security in Computing is in it's fifth edition, which just came out a few months into 2015. The ink is still wet but I didn't see much updated information from the fourth edition. But than again, security hasn't fixed many mistakes in the two and half decades I've been in it so I figure there isn't much new catastrophes to talk about. Sony is still messing up, that hasn't changed. Passwords are still weak. Applications are still poorly written. Hardware has bugs at the firmware level. I'm hard pressed to think on anything new to add that isn't already covered in this huge book.

I guess they could have talked about Hillary Clinton and her private email server or Target's data breach but that would just remind us of other security errors from the past. One of my favorite parts of this book is how each topic is clearly explained but not dumbed-down. I'm not the brightest guy but I do like the author to write at the appropriate level. The diagrams and pictures are helpful if you are really into flow carts. Some are even pretty funny.

Across the board, there isn't a topic that wasn't covered in this book. Okay, there were some things that could have been added but nothing that would make a big difference to this high quality book. Just to give you an idea of how big the reference material is: there are 27 pages of bibliographic information at the back of the book, all written in fine print. I needed to wear two pair of glasses to read some of those resources.

If you are interested in learning a heck of a lot more about our history and future as security professionals, you'll need this book. You will not pass any certification, get any special initials after your last name, or even earn a promotion for reading this book. However, if you are passionate about this field, I highly suggest you buy this book and read it. Older folks will appreciate the nods to those who taught us. Younger readers will appreciate where we came from before security vendors took over this profession.

Amazing amount of information
By T Anderson
This book is a beast!!! It is 100 % textbook, with a lot of exercises at the end of the chapters. If your class uses this book, get ready for a fire hose of information. It covers a ton of topics and covers them in depth.

Although it is a text book the authors do there best to keep it interesting. I really enjoyed the sidebars that include true stories of security breaches. I really like the ones that find out what the criminal was thinking. Some of the reasons for doing what they do are nuts.

One of the biggest problems with security I see today is the security teams oftentimes don't know what to secure, or how to secure stuff when they do. This book starts out with a really nice introduction to what computer security is. The author discusses Values of Assets, the Vulnerability–Threat–Control Paradigm, Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Types of Threats, Types of Attackers, Risk and Common Sense, Method–Opportunity–Motive, Vulnerabilities, and Controls. By the time you are done this chapter you have a high level few of today's security issues.

I was glad to see information on regulations, compliance, and laws. They can wreak havoc on an organization's productivity when left to an unqualified security team. I usually find that IT organizations that have locked down everything from the Internet to your USBs, have no concept of how to implement security in a managed and efficient way.

Years ago I was the lead research and development on a contract with the state. They allowed no internet except for 2 PCs that all 250 people on the project had to use. 90% of the time they were tied up with people checking their personal email. That was the days before smart phones. I would have to go home, research stuff, download it and burn it to CD, and take it in to work. I understand the thoughts behind natural immunity, but separating yourself from the world you are trying to successfully build software for, leads to software that doesn't meet the needs of that world.

More recently I was tasked with building a mobile application. The company had a guest wireless connection in place, but it was so locked down we couldn't use it. We needed to get data plans for the phones to test the applications. They also had emails with attachments reviewed by help desk personnel that would then release them. They basically are operating like the state project I mentioned above. Yet every security audit is failed.

This book does a great job of covering all the security topics you need to know about to work successfully in a decent size enterprise. The detail and depth of each topic amazed me.

A highlight of this book is that after the detailed introduction at the beginning of the book, each chapter contains topics you can read in isolation, while at the same time they are logically tied together.

Another highlight is that the book contains both timeless information and current information doing a really good job of tying the history of a topic to the current state of a topic. For example, the chapter on Cloud computing contains basic information on SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, as well as sidebars on current research happening today that isn't quite ready for release to the world.

Over all I highly recommend this book not only students that need it for a course, but to everyone that has any interest in learning more about the world of security. For the amount of information and the clarity of its delivery, this book is absolutely worth the price.

Mastering the Olympus OM-D E-M1, by Darrell Young

Olympus launched the OM-D E-M1 camera with a specific purpose in mind: to create a Micro Four Thirds camera for professional and advanced enthusiast photographers. As the flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, the E-M1 is the peak of the Olympus digital imaging system. It is a true system camera for those who demand the best in cameras, lenses, and image quality.

Darrell Young's Mastering the Olympus OM-D E-M1 explores the features and capabilities of the camera in a way that far surpasses the user's manual. It is designed to guide readers through the camera's features with step-by-step setting adjustments; color illustrations; and detailed how, when, and why explanations for each option. Every button, dial, switch, and menu configuration setting is explored in a user-friendly manner, with suggestions for setup according to various shooting styles.

Darrell's friendly and informative writing style allows readers to easily follow directions while feeling as if a friend dropped in to share his knowledge. The learning experience for new E-M1 users goes beyond just the camera itself and covers basic photography technique.

This book is based on firmware 3.0.

From the Author
This book was delayed for a few weeks to allow us to incorporate detailed information on the changes made to the camera's menu system and extra features added by the firmware updates 2.0 and 3.0. It provides information on all the camera's features, including the brand new ones introduced during the October 2014 and February 2015 camera updates.

About the Author
Darrell Young (aka Digital Darrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer in the East Tennessee, USA area. He is a member of Professional Photographers of America, the North American Nature Photography Association, and Nikon Professional Services--and adheres to the ethical guidelines of those fine organizations. Darrell has been photographing people, events, and places professionally for over 30 years, with a special interest in natural history.

His mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera in 1968 at the young age of 10 years and awakened a lifelong interest in capturing slices of time. Living in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains--near Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway--has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.

Since about 2000 Darrell has been an active blogger and article writer on photographic subjects. In 2008 his first photography book was published and, since then, he has authored over a dozen books on the technical side of photography, with a special interest in helping new photographers fully understand their complex cameras so they can use them for more effective and enjoyable photography.

Highly recommend this book!
By Robert Essner
I am fairly familiar with my EM-1 which I have owned for over a year now. I have read a number of other instructional manuals for other cameras over the years. After being one of the first people to purchase Darrell's "Mastering the Olympus OM-D EM-1" I have had some time to scan through a good portion of the book and focused on several specific things I wanted to learn more about - like HDR and IS settings for manual lenses. Without a doubt the information provided in this book will take me to a whole new level in understanding the myriad of capabilities of this awesome mirror-less camera. Darrell not only identifies "how" to navigate the various menu functions and operate the various buttons but he also explains "why" and provides recommendations for settings that might be most beneficial. The method of portraying all of this information is laid out in a very logical format that is easy to follow and understand in layman's terms. I bought the e-version PDF file so it is easy for me to search on specific things and keep clicking where the word pops up to capture everything about it. I pre-ordered the paperback version too.

I am just scratching the surface for what I have had time to read but after scanning through it I'm very anxious to absorb as much of this as possible. I also ride motorcycles and have for years. I know all the mechanical and operational aspects of my motorcycles so I can enjoy my rides by paying attention to traffic and scenery without stumbling over the controls. I want to be able to operate my EM-1 just the same way so I can visualize and plan my pictures without fumbling around with the operation of the camera. I also own an EM-5 so a lot of what is included in this book will apply to the operation of that camera too. Although this is just a hobby for me I've always believed that investing in the best equipment and taking time to learn all about it will result in the best outcomes. We can all improve no matter what level of photographer we are - and anyone reading this book will definitely improve in their photographic capabilities with the EM-1.

Also note that Darrel has set up a special FB Group for those that purchase this manual so hopefully we can begin learning more from each other through that forum too.

Best 'Mastering' book for a camera I've read - and this is a camera that has a lot of subtle capabilities
By D. Goldman
I am a Nikon (land based) photographer and have seen, skimmed and purchased a number of books on camera operation thru the years. Manuals that come with these fabulous cameras are woefully inadequate, sometimes they are worse than no manual. This is my first Olympus camera and I plan to use it underwater. Darrell Young's book Mastering the OM-D E-M1 stands out from the crowd in its comprehensiveness and clarity.

To get the value from this camera one must learn how to configure it for easy access to its capabilities without using the touch screen! I am a pretty advanced camera user ( highly skilled but not professional) and can usually pick up a camera and figure out most of the basic stuff without much challenge. Same for this camera, however to use the camera for my intent requires accessing the advanced features, configuring buttons and levers, all without using the touch screen. Thanks to this book I've shortened my learning curve and then some. This book has exceeded my expectations! One other note - rather than re-state the things that ARE in the manual, this book (e version) provides links to the appropriate tables and content

Thank you to Darrell for such a comprehensive and well organized book.

Look no further! This is the one book you need!
By RLHN
FINALLY a book that is a worthy companion to this amazing camera! This is an extremely thorough guide to the extensive (almost overwhelming) array of menus, buttons, levers, and switches that the OM-D EM-1 presents. Unlike some other resources that cover only the "what" (without the "how" and the "why"), or skip whole sections of the menus, Mr. Young fully explains the options, and even offers his own personal recommendations. The only "fault" is that it took so long for this book to be published...but that was due to the author's desire to keep up with Olympus's ongoing firmware improvements. [Note: It's important to access the updated information available on the author's website, because Olympus has subsequently made, and likely will continue to make, even further changes!] Every photographer has his or her own needs that vary depending on skill level, subject, environment, and personal preferences...this book will help each owner configure the E-M1 to best suit their individual requirements.

An Introduction to Cybercurrency
By Nyssa
There has been a lot of talk about Bitcoin in the various financial and technical media lately. This book helps to explain the basic technical information of what Bitcoins are, how they are created, and how they can be earned and traded. Concepts such as Bitcoin Wallets and mining are explained in a way that most readers with minimal technical computer background will be able to grasp.

While a techie may find the explanations lacking depth, this book is meant more for the general population who want to understand what all of the hype is about in order to make a more informed decisions on whether to take a flyer on investing and trading in Bitcoins. Suggestions on safeguards in dealing with Bitcoins are touched upon, and there is a brief discussion of the benefits and possible negatives of jumping into the Bitcoin world.

There are plenty of pointers to outside sources for more information on mining or storing Bitcoins for those who want to investigate further, but I would have liked a little more information included in the book itself, especially in the area of places that accept Bitcoins as payment. As someone with a technical background, I would have appreciated more pointers to sources for the technical and security issues involved with the creation of Bitcoins since that level of detail was beyond the scope of this book, perhaps as a selected bibliography listing at the end of the book.

There are other virtual currencies out in the cyberworld besides Bitcoin, and the concept has been tried in the past with poor results; however, with Bitcoin being the most talked about of the various currencies these days, this book will give the reader a place to start in their understanding about Bitcoin specifically and of the general principles of virtual currencies and how they operate.

Recommended.

Superb Introduction For Bitcoin Novices!
By Dr. Johnson C. Philip
I have been hearing about Bitcoins for the last five months, but all my searches brought me only minimal information. The more detailed articles tended to give highly technical information only.

This book, as the title says, starts with the basics. It does not assume any previous knowledge on the part of the read and takes the reader from introduction upward. For the first time I feel that I understand the subject and that I can now go on to intermediate and advanced level books on this subject.

The book will not make you a wizard in this subject, because it is a basics book, but it will give you sufficient basics to help you to go to the next higher step. If Bitcoins have puzzled you, then here is the book to start with. Highly recommended!

Bitcoin basics
By James Beller
No one I know could explain what bitcoins are all about. I read dozens of newspaper and magazine reports but none of them answered the basic question; what are they and how do they work? I ordered the Kindle version and read it the same day it arrived. The book is right to the point and briefly. There are excellent references regarding best way and with whom to get involved in the bitcoin market. You can also use bitcoins on amazon.
