Nice Selection

I have owned this book for years and read the stories to my son growing up. This collection is superior to a lot of others in that it presents a wide variety of stories - from silly fairy stories to more dramatic folk tales. It also gives a broader variety of countries, including genuine Welsh, Irish, and Scottish tales. It is an excellent sampler of the folklore of the Celts, and just plain fun to read.

Authentic Fairy Tales

I like this book for some easy reading, and fun. The Fairy Tales are written pretty much as they would have been spoken from generation to generation. The language and words sometimes used helps to authenticate the Fairy Tales and in my opinion gives even more enjoyment to the stories.

Unfortunately, that same aspect can sometimes slow the story down as there is not a Celtic to English dictionary included. But I would definitely buy this again.

Thrilled with the purchase. Truly a relevant and concise gathering of Jacobs' fairy tales. The only criticism I have is in regard to the book cover. It is rather bland and banal but the work within is truly great. A great buy for the money!

The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities.

Grade 8 Up-British actor Martin Shaw reads this shortened version of the classic Emily Bronte novel. His easily-understood accent is appropriate and helps to set the mood. Shaw reads at a very steady pace, pausing effectively for emphasis or when his character might be thinking. Usually calm and gentle, his voice can resonate with anger or other emotion when necessary. There is some differentiation in pitch to emphasize male vs. female speech, but it is not exaggerated or overdone. The abridgement retains Bronte's words linking speech or narration sometimes from one page to another. It provides students with an easier way to become familiar with the story and get a feel for her style. Teachers could use this presentation to introduce the novel or to entice students to read it on their own.

The poignant story of an "old-fashioned girl."

I am 18 and have read this book at least 30 times. Its simplicity and reality seem to reach into my soul and I seem to have found a "kindred spirit" in the heroine. No other fictitious character has ever moved me as has Polly, an old-fashioned girl. A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hardwork. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedistal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times. Polly is the most understanding and genuine character I have ever read about. Her love for others and her unwillingness to lower her standards and morals for popularity are an inspiration to people of all ages and prove that nothing is wrong with being "an old fashioned girl."

I'm 15 and you can call me a little bit old fashioned in my ways. I read an old fashioned girl for the first time when i was 11 and since then ive been reading the book at least 4 times a year.My copy of an old fashioned girl is sacred to me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a girl living in totally different times but who is really similar to us nowadays even is she is a little old fashioned! This book is good for any one of any age anywhere who wants to have someone to admire and someone to look up to. Polly is indeed, the perfect girl. As to Fanny and Tom they make the book livelier and funner to read, you'll never get bored with this book in your reach!

Simple Good Clean fun

Do you ever feel like you are tied up in our times? Worrying too much about cell phones, fashions, and the latest whatevers? This book can set you straight. It gives you a peace of mind and fills you with simple pleasures.

The stories main character, Polly, we meet at the age of 14. She has come to stay with rich friends for a while. THey do everything so differently from she. The family has two daughters. One that is two years older than Polly called Fan, who cares for fashion, balls, and beaus. The author daughter is six and she is fixed onoo having her own way about everything. THe young man in the family Tom is a trouble maker, who no matter how hard he tries can't seem to stay out of trouble very long.

Polly is a gentle, kind, loving, caring, selfless, practical, and sensible girl. SHe becomes a great service to this family, touching each of them in a special way. She moves in the same town six years later and gives piano lessons. The family needs her more than ever and she helps them all in the end. This book has heart, romance, and realness to it that we can all relate to, rich or poor, young or old. It will make you feel warm fuzzies. Read on a rainy day underneath a flanel blanket!

If you want to get better at this very addictive game this book is well ...

This was the second book that I read about the WOTs. While many of the topics were a rehash for me, there was still fresh perspective and kernels of new information in each topic. If you want to get better at this very addictive game this book is well worth the read. As an aside, I also enjoyed the author's European flare and anti communist sentiment (in a humorous way). Look for Mitchess on the map of your choice.

Just book i was looking for!

It is good to see a book that can teach u things when u thought u had noyhing more to learn! I like the way the author is very kind and explains things the right way (not like rude people in chat).Once i was in a battle (ugly canyon is all i remember)but i was the last tank standing along with the last tank of the other team. Everyone in chat wanted me dead or the opposite.So i ignored people in chat and fpund the arty unit (artillery ). I killed it in two shots. if i had not read this book i would have died. Great book!

It's good to come across a guide for the lower tiers. This one discusses most relevant issues in detail and, while I don't always agree with the author's opinions, they are good food for thought. Overall, I found it a good read and worth the money.

Promising at first, but couldn't finish it

Although the author often wrote for children, this one is for adults.

The fictional diarist has run off to a little country town, to get away from people and refresh herself. It starts out charmingly, but once she settles down to stay at a farmhouse, her comments about the country people and even the animals started to annoy me. I'm sure it was supposed to be humorous, and apparently it was in 1902. I've managed to find one review online that called it "sprightly." Another one says this author cannot write a dull page, and sees the book as full of satire on then-current social issues. For example, she satirizes the concept of the New Woman by calling an animal that refused to raise young as a New Hen or whatever (the exact animal escapes me). However, reading it in 2010, and probably not getting all of what she was satirizing in 1902, a lot of it just sounded like an upper-class woman making condescending remarks about country people. And roosters. I happen to like roosters. Anyway, I was hoping to find a pleasant, bucolic story, but this wasn't it.

Fun and amusing story

I really enjoyed this pastoral tale of a girl seeking refuge from suitors and family settling into life on a farm. Though she is a paying guest, she soon integrates into the household and begins shepherding the geese. The book is mostly a series of mini-stories about her adventures, each chapter is almost self-contained.

I think it describes the countryside very nicely and I found most of the narrator's observations to be funny. I don't think that she mocks the animals, she at one point questions how she can eat a duckling or hen that she's raised from a baby. It's definitely not written about 2010 and many of the events are fairly unlikely now, but the simple life that she describes sounds nice.

This book is written in diary form and is not at all fast pace. It is a book you can set down when ever you want to. There are some funny occurrences but over all its a bit dull. There is a little romance but it is not nearly as well written as Rose of the River. Over all an okay read

funniest book

perhaps Trisdam Shandy or parts of Mark Twain are as funny on a sustained basis, but this book is up there. Each paragraph is a howl or chuckle. Quite a work of genius. And the level of insight relevant today is remarkable. 1809 is not dated in the hands of one like this.

Western Borders in the 1770's

Zane Grey's second novel about life along the early American western frontier. Drawn from personal family history, he captures the brutality and the compassion of the early pioneers and the Indian nations that they were dispossessing.
Lewis Wetzel "Le vent de la mort", (Death Wind) is a prominent figure in this book. Wetzel is a genuine historical personage and is accurately portrayed as both a guardian to the border settlements and the Indian hater and killer he was known to be.
The book follows the life and adventures of two brothers Jim and Joe, Jim a Christian missionary and Joe a gregarious newcomer to frontier life. Wetzel always known as a loner, develops a friendship with the young man Joe and trains him in the ways of forest woodcraft. All the while Jim struggles to strengthen and protect the already established Morvian Indian mission. All of this set against the intrigue of Indian politics,war and the rampaging murders and kidnappings of the white renegades Simon and Jim Girty.
Although an historical novel, Zane Grey uses the various characters and happenings as a vehicle to give us a clear picture of the sentiment surrounding the precarious daily life for both the defenders of the Indian nations and those who acted as the American border rangers.

Drawing upon ancestors notes, Zane Gray reconstructs the agony of America's initial transmontane western movement of the frontier away from the original colonies into the OHIO Valley where Indians and Whites contest for souls and Wetzel, and Indian hunter, pursues his cause in a most dramatic fashion. The book is a riveting account of true adventure the veiled backdrop of which is the continued occupation of the teritory occupied by British and Americans. An excellent introduction to further study of the the then misunderstood goal of Manifest Destiny.

VERY MANY BUILDING IDEAS!

I loved this book I became a building expert! I builded many types of building in my minecraft world. The coolest building was the great big beautiful mansion. It was very impressive. I wish I could build other cool buildings such as a palace, village etc. So if you want to become a minecraft expert buy this cunstruction handbook.

Great, but needs to be more specific

This book is great, but I believe that it would be better if the text included how tall or wide a part of the structure should be. Don't take this the wrong way, it is a very good book for those who really likes building big structures.

This book just focuses on 5 or 6 different types of houses. It has lots of pictures and was exactly what my 6 year old wanted. It is purely house construction though with no other information, but for us it was perfect.

Lawrence constructed a parallel between the power that was miraculously manifested in the blossoming rod wielded by the biblical figure Aaron and the effect of the flute played by the protagonist of the novel, Aaron Sisson. Sisson is an amateur flutist who works in a coal mine. He abandons his wife and the life he has known to travel and seek new adventures, making his living as a flutist. An odyssey of passion, individuality and art

Aaron Sisson, a coal miner and amateur flutist in the Midlands, abandons his wife and two children and escapes to Italy in the hope of throwing off the trammels of his environment and realising his individual potentials. His dream is to become recognised as a master flutist. In Florence, he mixes in intellectual and artistic circles and has an affair with an aristocratic lady who redeems him in his own eyes. Like the majority of Lawrence's novels, the central theme is the relations between men and women, though this time, it is given a twist owing to Lawrence nourishing his mind on a reading of Nietzsche, who was then gradually becoming recognised in England. In his analysis of the concept of "love" between the sexes, Lawrence perceives it as a function of the will to power, a cycle of reciprocal domination and surrender, in which the man must conquer and the woman must submit. Elements of the rejection of the "herd morality" on Aaron's part and his endeavour at self-development are both ideas of peculiarly Nietzschean provenance. The fact that Aaron realises himself through music is another echo of Nietzsche, who regarded music as the purest and most supreme of the arts, in which the passions achieve immense gratification. The title refers to the rod of Aaron in the Old Testament, one of Moses's renegade priests who built the golden calf in the desert for the worship of the Israelites. The rod, his symbol of authority and independence, finds its echo in Aaron's flute, which is broken later in the novel during an anarchist riot. There is a price to pay, Lawrence seems to imply, for daring to oppose orthodoxy and to try to create a new life for oneself. Unlike Lawrence's more famous works, such as "Lady Chatterly's Lover" and "Women in Love", which are both admirable for their rich, poetic prose, "Aaron's Rod" is drably written and occasionally tedious, with a narrative that is sometimes poorly connected, as it dwells on irrelevancies. However, the message, that of an individual fulfilling his duty to himself, is an encouraging and refreshing one.

Strangely, this was my first full-length D.H. Lawrence novel. Thankfully, I'd read enough of his short stories and essays to know that Aaron's Rod isn't indicative of his artistic capabilities. I was more impressed by the concept behind the novel than its execution. Essentially, Aaron Sisson's abandonment of his family and job in order to join a travelling orchestra is meant to symbolize the power and passion of "individual freedom," "personal friendship", "masculinity" and "art". I think he only half-succeeds. Just as Aaron comes across as an "incomplete" man searching for meaning in post World War I Europe, I think the novel is too loosely constructed, and Lawrence's characters, too thinly drawn. But on a symbolic level, they are full of Lawrentian psychology. The characters of Rawden Lilly, Struthers, the Bricknells, and others all overtly represent various aspects of male and female polarities; however, they are un-memorable and sometimes difficult to relate to.
I was hoping this would be more of an "artist's novel" containing interesting descriptions of Aaron's life in Florence with his bohemian friends, and to a certain extent it is, but Lawrence seemed more interested in symbolism than in telling a good story. Though scattered as a story, the concepts of individuality and society are clearly portrayed throughout "Aaron's Rod", and towards the end, when the anarchist's bomb goes off, we sense a "breaking" (the blue ball/ornament at the beginning, and the flute/rod at the end) of an outdated mode of thinking (i.e. patriarchy, male dominance, etc.) in favor not necessarily of feminity, but an integration of the two. This particular Penguin edition has an excellent introduction and helpful end-notes by Steven Vine which help explain Lawrence and his symbolism to those unfamiliar with his works. I might re-read this novel once I've read more of Lawrence, and come back to it one day from a different viewpoint, but for now, I'd have to say that unless you're a real Lawrence afficionado, I'd hold off on this one until you figure out whether or not you like Lawrence enough to proceed to something as scattered, cold, and dry as this novel comes across.

One of my favorite books, but this edition is a disgrace

I'm not going to waste anyone's time by spouting the virtues of this book, other than it is one of those that gets better with each successive read and only makes you want to know more about Lawrence, since a lot of it is autobiographical. It's a very philisophical, thoughtful, reflective book, not heavy on plot. It might really be insubstantial if not for the quality of Lawrence's prose.

Now, for this Public Domain edition (at a not so bargain price). Mmmmmm, let's see...about 12 missing pages (that's right, completely missing), pages that look like they were copied by a 3 year old, or an 87 year old lush librarian --- smudgy, misshapen words, etc. Hey, I know this work is in the public domain....that's no excuse to grab some piece of deteriorating crap off the shelf, copy it and then attempt to profit by duping people that what they're getting is a quality product.

It's not like there aren't better, complete versions out there...THEY'RE ON THE WEB!!!

This edition is lazy, a travesty, and should be banned from being sold by Amazon as fradulent advertising.

About the Author

Diane Barrett is the president of NextGard Technology and a professor for Bloomsburg University. She has done contract forensic and security assessment work for several years and has authored several other security and forensic books. She is a program director for ADFSL’s Conference on Digital Forensics, Security, and Law; the DFCP certification chair for the Digital Forensic Certification Board; and a volunteer for the NIST Cloud Computing Forensic Science Challenges working group. She holds many industry certifications, including CISSP, ISSMP, DFCP, and PCME, along with several from CompTIA, including Security+. Diane’s education includes a Ph.D. in business administration with a specialization in information security and a master of science degree in information technology with a specialization in information security.

Martin M. Weiss has years of experience in information security, risk management, and compliance. Marty holds a bachelor of science degree in computer studies from the University of Maryland University College and an MBA from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He holds several certifications, including CISSP, CISA, and Security+. Marty has authored and co-authored more than a half dozen books on information technology. Occasionally, he molds minds as an adjunct professor with the University of Maryland University College. A Florida native, he now lives in New England somewhere between Boston and New York City.

Pearson Test aren't per chapter. Test included is not complete

I purchased this as a google book. Then decided I wanted the paperback and the testing materials. The Pearson tests do not work correctly and they aren't in any hurry to fix it. The PDF test on the cd, has questions from all over the book. The Pearson test software has questions from all over the book. The function to take a test after each chapter DOES NOT WORK! So if you would like a test after each chapter to see what you need to re read you are SOL and Pearson certainly doesn't care! Also you will find out there are more questions available at Pearson if you pay more money...hmmm The Pearson IT Certification practice tests included in this book are incomplete and do not work as advertised! I may as well go back to the online book from google. Any chance I can get my money back for the paperback and useless test

The book is very well written and the security topics are well organised and focused for the exam. There are also a lot
of good practice questions. I looked at several books and this one seemed to be the best. Good book...

Great for studying

Great book for studying but do use other material too due to some terms are not in the book. It is also has a lot of repetitive information.
