Laura's approach to preparing for the CBAP resulted in an invaluable tool for those starting their journey. This book is a natural progression from the series of articles the author wrote during her journey, which I've recommended numerous times to advice seekers. An Honest Review

With Laura Brandenburg’s How to Earn Your CBAP® or CCBA® in 3 Months: My CBAP Journey, we have our first known published diary of a Business Analysis professional preparing for and pursuing certification (Certification of Competency in
Business Analysis (CCBA) and/or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) ) recognized by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Having prepared for and successfully taken the Law School Admission Test myself (the LSAT - an
examination of very similar magnitude and depth), I hasten to suggest that this account would be no less insightful and meaningful if one simply substituted the names of significant professional examinations (whether certification entailed or not), expanding its
relevance to other professions comprised with milestones of recognized achievement. After all, we’re all human.
With her affable nature, humorous quips and light-hearted anecdotes, Laura makes palatable and entertaining an otherwise dry subject matter that commonly evokes reactions ranging from disinterest to dread to dodge (the ‘flight’ in that ‘fight or flight’
psychology).
The reader is alerted early on that the subject matter and significance of certification are being dealt with candidly, agnostically, and with only the best interest of the reader in mind. This pledge is important for the integrity of the composition, genuinely disclaiming any inclination to merely shill for those services that stand to gain from certification exam preparation and registration. The pledge holds up throughout the book, as the reader is met with sincere and oft engaging narrative as well as checkpoints of essential nuances and facts. Throughout, the “journey” is indeed not only personal, but with intervals of engaging feedback sought from whomever willing to offer it (seen via links to Bridging the Gap posts).
Every journey has different paths to the same destination, of which Laura’s is just one, but nonetheless one into which the reader uniquely gains privileged insight. Were it not for her revealing the pages of her diary, one would need to otherwise find and canvass a number of busy Business Analysts willing to share their anecdotes. Laura offers an opportunity to bypass that step in what is still arduous preparation.
Those who have yet to complete any length of this journey, let alone reach the singular destination, can surely find some measure of meaningful inspiration from Laura’s real-world experience, plainly narrated. Each reader also gains from the practical tips and
links that ensue, not the least of which are:
• Study approaches and nuances of thought processes in both self-directed preparation and study groups, strategizing study and examination scheduling, and a cautionary word or two about the dreaded “trick question”;
• Links to practice exams, prep classes, and supplemental preparatory resource material options, including pricing; and
• Insightful comparison of two prominent certification examination simulators.
By taking the introspective route and baring it to the reader, we come to understand and appreciate the almost organic connection between self-sacrifice to prepare and take the examination, to one’s sense of confidence and validation for past work done. Here, we have that extra layer of value that we can all internalize. As Laura put it, “looking back, this confidence has come not so much from the letters or passing the test, but from the process of preparing for the test. By absorbing the BABOK® Guide [(the tomb recording the profession’s Body of Knowledge)], I solidified the value of my own experience and built an internal confidence I didn’t have previously”.
While Laura shares her success and aftermath with modesty, I am convinced that had she not been successful at her first go at it, she would genuinely have shared that twist and how she undoubtedly championed the entire process on the subsequent attempt.
Laura selflessly credits and thanks her mentors and many peers for supporting ‘her journey’ along the way - characteristic of the conspicuous professional-community-mindedness of so many in the profession. When one concludes reading her passage,
one ought to immediate come away with an initial sentiment in reflection – one more to thank - - Really, 'Thank You, Laura!'

Spot-on description of getting your CBAP/CCBA

Laura did an excellent job with this compilation of stories about her CBAP journey. I remember well when Laura went through the process, reading about her experience because I was doing mine at the same time. I specifically recall thinking that she was spot-on in explaining what it's like to go through this path to certification. And, reading through her ebook now, I can confirm she has described it very well here as well.
This is very well written, enjoyable to read, and certainly a must-read before you decide to start the CBAP/CCBA process or soon after you start!
