Cable Networks, Services, and Management is the first book to cover cable networks, services, and their management, in-depth, for network operators, engineers, researchers, and students. Thirteen experts in various fields have contributed their knowledge of network architectures and services, Operations, Administration, Maintenance, Provisioning, Troubleshooting (OAMPT) for residential and business services, cloud, Software Defined Networks (SDN), as well as virtualization concepts and their applications as part of the future directions of cable networks.
The book begins by introducing architecture and services for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0/ 3.1, Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP), Content Distribution Networks (CDN, IP TV, and Packet Cable and Wi-Fi for Residential Services. Topics that are discussed in proceeding chapters include: operational systems and management architectures, service orders, provisioning, fault management, performance management, billing systems and formats, and security for residential services. Similar to residential services, functions for business services as DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE), EPON Protocol over Coax (EPOC), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), fault management, billing systems, and formats are explained.
The book concludes with a note on future directions for cable networks by describing cloud services, virtualization, SDN, and the proposed self-managed network concepts with their applications.
Mehmet Toy, Ph.D, is a Distinguished Engineer at Comcast, USA, involved in network architectures and standards. Previously, Dr. Toy held management and technical positions at ADVA Optical Networking, Intel Corporation, Verizon Wireless, Axiowave Networks, Fujitsu Network Communications, AT&T Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies. He has contributed to research, development and standardization of Cloud Services Architectures, Metro Ethernet, DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE), IP Multimedia Systems (IMS), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), optical, IP/MPLS, and wireless. He has authored four books, and numerous articles in these areas and signal processing, and has taught at universities as a tenure-track and adjunct faculty member.
About the Author
Mehmet Toy is a Network Consultant at ADVA Optical Networking, Inc., USA for Metro Ethernet products and standards. Prior to his current position, Dr. Toy held management and technical positions in Intel Corp., Verizon Wireless, Axiowave Networks, Fujitsu Network Communications, AT&T Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies. He led IMS software/hardware integration and architecture definition at Intel Corp., represented Verizon Wireless at 3GPP2 standards and participated in the development of Verizon Wireless IMS architecture.

This book is horrible. Not only is it filled with grammatical errors

This book is horrible. Not only is it filled with grammatical errors, but it also contains misinformation. DOCSIS 3.0 downstream is 6.4 Mhz wide (page 17) ? Since when ? It is clear that there were no proof readers on this project. And the IEEE Press asking price is in line with most text books ! Stay away.

Great Overview of CATV Network Management

Network Management has evolved over the past few decades from a somewhat rag tag collection of disparate monitors provided by separate vendors into an integrated system oversight approach. This book is an excellent summary of network management applied to CATV systems.
The book discusses residential and business applications and presents the OA&M functions of these systems. In the residential side there is an initial focus on DOCSIS and its internal mechanisms as well and the network functions that it supports and provides. The functions range from classic performance, fault, maintenance, inventory and security type functions and the discussion is readily understood and complete.
The business applications are equally well presented.
Overall I strongly recommend this book if one wants to understand how CATV systems are managed. The discussions readily applies to fiber based systems as well.
There is some limited discussion of security issues and limited discussions on such issues as handling DMCA. In addition there is no discussion on CALEA concerns.
One of the challenges of CATV systems is that the edge technology, DOCSIS modems are slow to change. Often CATV modems are 10+ years old and thus despite modern network management techniques the network itsellf is limited to quite old technology. In fact the networks are often fiber mixed with local coax, often well ovet twenty years old.
CATV network management is a challenge and this book is an exceptionally good contribtion in understanding it.
