PreS-Gr 2—In an afterword, Kirk explains that his adaptation of the beloved poem was motivated by a desire to make it more relevant to modern children. Thus sugar plums become "yummy treats," brains are not settled (too confusing), Santa is not dressed in fur, and the pipe and smoke are eliminated for health reasons. As in Kirk's "Library Mouse" books (Abrams), the stars of this adaptation are mice; in fact, careful observation will reveal that Papa Mouse is related to the mouse protagonist of the adapter's other books. The illustrations are large and brightly colored. Santa is depicted as a lumberjack. VERDICT Purists might find the changes off putting, but fans of Kirk and the "Library Mouse" series will enjoy this charming take on the classic poem.—Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

Daniel Kirk version

This is regarding the version adapted and illustrated by Daniel Kirk. (Some of the reviews here seem to be about other editions). In the author's note Daniel Kirk says, "One of the curious things about 'A Visit from St. Nicholas,' written in the nineteenth century, is that some of the language and concepts can be a bit confusing to today's children. I know that when I read the poem to my kids, there were times I'd have to stop reading, breaking the mood to explain phrases like 'settled our brains' and 'just like a peddler opening his pack' or why Santa was smoking..."
Consequently, he leaves out the part about "the smoke of his pipe", which is ok. I have not huge problem with that. The problem I have is with the re-written text. Instead of "A bundle of toys he had flung on his back and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack" he wrote "A bundle of toys he had flung on his back and I shivered with joy when he opened his pack." Really? That was a necessary change? I think Kirk doesn't give children enough credit. If they don't know what a peddler opening his pack means, just explain it. From then on they'll know.
That's not the only change he made. Instead of sugarplums dancing in the kids' heads, there are visions of yummy treats. (Ok, they are mice. They are dreaming about nuts and cheesy things).
I don't know.... I just don't think Daniel Kirk's changes to the text are improvements.

It's okay

It's okay. Better for very young children. Bright pictures. Was looking for a nice book for Santa to read to children on Christmas Eve. Will give this to our 3 year old Granddaughter and look for a traditional (possibly Vintage) book for Santa.

Just make sure that if you don't know japanese..you get the right version..both very similar in appearance..or I was really tired, but refund.was instant ...so its all good. Nice illustrations
