An Outstanding "Big Picture" Reference - Starting Out? Start Here

I'm sure there may be some cave dweller somewhere who is not familiar with the concept behind the "For Dummies" series but the rest of us generally recognize them as outstanding, authoritative resources for hundreds of topics. I have read and reviewed many of these books and, without exception, have found everyone of them to be exactly what they claim to be.

"Coding For Dummies" is one of the best ones I've read yet. If you are interested in learning how to code for the web, but don't have much experience or knowledge, get this book first! It is an outstanding overview of all the latest information on creating content for the web experience.

The book is clearly designed for those who know all the words but don't necessarily understand them. If you have worked in HTML in the past but need a refresher course on the latest coding languages, it is here. This modestly sized volume (only about 260 pages) covers everything you need to know to get up to speed with HTML 5, CSS, Javascript, Python and Ruby. These days, clients and employers (and users, whether they know it or not) are interested in responsive design and app creation, both are here with sections on Bootstrap and app creation. These days you want to make sure you are designing for the phone or tablet, that is all here.

The book is lavishly illustrated (in color!) and demos are clear and easy to follow. There is also an outstanding section of resources and great advice on how to move forward in coding. I have done some computer coding and have used many resources to get better at it, but this was the best book I have used yet for giving me a big picture sense of the whole business.

This is not a "college course in a book." No section is in depth enough to make you an expert on the subject, although for beginners the HTML and the CSS sections are very thorough, but there is enough here to get you pointed in the right direction.

A Good Survey Book of Web Programming Languages

A great survey book for the person who wants to become acquainted with web-based computer programming, and doesn’t know where to begin. A better title for the book might be “Web-based Computer Programming for Dummies” as the books deals almost exclusively with the web-based computer languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, and Python. It omits much talk about some of the more tradition languages such as C++, Java, SQL, etc.

The author assumes that the reader knows nothing and starts at the beginning with the most rudimentary topics as “what is computer coding”, and the difference between high-level and low-level languages.

The book isn’t a deep dive into any of the fore mentioned languages; rather, it ties them all together at a high level so that the reader understands how they interact and the responsibilities and features of each language.
Not to say that this book is void of actually programming. It helps the reader build his/her first web-based application. It also introduces the reader to conditional logic and inspecting the code via a browser tool.

The goal of this book is to give the reader enough understanding that he/she can then dive into more in-depth tutorials on each one of the languages individually. The author list ten great free sites devoted to tutoring in computer programming. This is not a book that will make a great reference for years to come. And the reader will quickly outgrow this book with the knowledge he/she learns when finished. Nevertheless, it is an indispensable guide with basic, essential understandings that often get overlooked by more in-depth programming books.

A great resource for novice coders

I'm reasonably tech-savvy, but never coded outside of one (long since forgotten) class of C++ in high school. All the talk of late about "data scraping," "writing scripts," etc. got me interested in learning about coding, so I've been working through the book. It delivered. As all "For Dummies" books should, it uses plain language and was easy to read. Also, it tied into the Codecademy site nicely. Recommend it.

I brought Asura's Wrath and loved it. The actual art and character models was caught my attention first. This book breaks down each part of the story and the motivations of the gods and why they treat the humans the way they do. The book itself is well put together. Good but disappointing.

This was a disappointing artbook. The videogame Asura's Wrath is full of amazing art from the many talented artists at CyberConnect2; unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the artbook. While the great concept art (such as the amazing end chapter art from the game) is present, it's presented in the book in very small size, far too small for it to be truly appreciated. There are many character concept sketches and creator commentary, so there is still content to be had in this artbook, just not the best the game had to offer.

"This is a really great book – it describes a simple and beautiful idea in a way that is accessible for novices and experts alike. This "simple idea" is that information is a formal quantity that underlies nearly everything we do. In this book, Stone leads us through Shannon’s fundamental insights; starting with the basics of probability and ending with a range of applications including thermodynamics, telecommunications, computational neuroscience and evolution. There are some lovely anecdotes: I particularly liked the account of how Samuel Morse (inventor of the Morse code) pre-empted modern notions of efficient coding by counting how many copies of each letter were held in stock in a printer's workshop. The treatment of natural selection as "a means by which information about the environment is incorporated into DNA" is both compelling and entertaining. The substance of this book is a clear exposition of information theory, written in an intuitive fashion (true to Stone's observation that "rigour follows insight"). Indeed, I wish that this text had been available when I was learning about information theory. Stone has managed to distil all of the key ideas in information theory into a coherent story. The most clear explanation - applicable to all - of any mathematical topic to date

Whether you are just beginning your relationship with mathematics or you are a theoretical mathematician working on the applications of knot theory to 4D topology, you have something to gain from this book.

Mathematics is hard. The language in which mathematicians describe their work only compounds the difficulty of learning math for few are fluent in this succinct language. Unfortunately, it is this language almost all introductory mathematical textbooks inevitably conform to, at the cost of the reader's comprehension. Dr. Stone, overcomes this language rift by explaining the math in a friendly, familiar way. He further takes the care to ensure appropriate time is spent clarifying each topic in a variety of ways (in case one does not make much sense). Stone also provides appendices as reference for the reader who may need more explanation or refreshers. This kind of guidance through mathematical theory is inherently absent in the mathematical language as its core is precision, brevity, and removal of all redundancy.

It is his very thoughtful explanation and walkthrough which makes me confidence to say that Dr. James V Stone's introduction to information theory is conceivably the best book I have read; not just in regards to information theory but in regards to mathematics (applied or otherwise) as a whole.
The reader is guided through Shannon's seminal work in a way that is applicable regardless of the reader's background (mathematics, art, biology, journalism, etc). Dr. Stone helps the reader develop an intuition for information theory.

The feeling of such a clear and expounded grasp on a mathematical field is so rare currently that this feeling is most difficult to describe other than you'll "just get it." If you have had minimal exposure to math, are helplessly confused by proofs, feel like you just never understand, this book is for you. This book is equally applicable to those versed in mathematics, as it provides an understanding that is often disjoint from a theoretical approach.

Consider how many people utilize "basic" mathematics to help them approach and solve questions in their daily life intuitive like e.g. if I make $x per month, how much do I earn per week? Of my weekly earnings, if I set aside y for groceries and z for savings, how much do I have left to spend?
The commonplaceness of applying math in this way, by understanding the concepts behind the math, rather than just plugging into a formula is exactly what you can expect to gain from reading Dr. Stone's book. By the end of even the first section of the first chapter, the reader may find that they are already grasping this intuitive understanding, and applying it to the world around them. Dr. Stone helps the reader integrate the core concepts of information theory so that the math behind it becomes a tool for the reader to use, rather than to be perplexed by.

The book is a joy to read, and a privilege to learn from.

For those who have read the review this far, I study mathematics and neuroscience. As such, I have read my fair share of mathematical textbooks, mathematical introductions, and mathematical books for "dummies" (as I often feel myself). In my experience math never stops being complex, and try as many might to simply it, none have succeeded as well as Dr. Stone. I was versed in information theory before reading this book. The intuition and deep understanding / appreciation for this field that I have gained from the book is unheard-of. It is intuition that makes a great mathematician, and this book will teach you to think intuitively. The clarity of Dr. Stone's work is so profound I have little other way to describe how accessible it is to all walks of life.

While many may not consider this a "mathematical textbook," let Dr. Stone's style be an example for how math should initially be taught. This book works well as a standalone text, and as a supplement to more intricate texts in regard to information theory. Do not let the title introduction fool you, Dr. Stone manages to maintain the intricacies of the field in a way often overlooked.

Very good first book to read on information theory.

Since ive read James Stones Bayes's Rule: A tutorial introduction Ive been waiting this book with great expectation and the author didn't let me down.

Its a natural step after reading Pierce's Book on information theory or as a Information theory first book before digging deep on other books as Cover etc. The first 4 chapters deal with the discrete version of information theory and its main concept, entropy. It gives several examples and clear explanations without avoiding the math/formulas. After that it goes on the continuous case and does a good job too.

Even tough the author does offer a good revision material on probability(CDF, PDF, etc) as appendix, if you have never seen these terms before, I would advise to take a probability class to take full advantage of the book.

This is one of the best books on information theory that I've ever seen

This is one of the best books on information theory that I've ever seen. Being an amateur researcher in quantum information theory, I feel that this book will certainly help any student embarking on this area to have a solid understanding on the basics of information theory. It was a real pleasure in working through the book from one end to the other.

This book is well written and probably great for CPAs

This book is well written: it flows and is an easy read. The reason for only 3 stars is no fault of the writer but of the software and print quality. I started using QuickBooks Online some months ago and was enormously frustrated by it so advance ordered this book. I thought it was my learning curve but the books shows that QBO cannot do what I thought would be its basic strengths as on online system. In fact, it cannot do anything but very basic accounting and payroll. So, about a third of this slim version is devoted to the average QBO user. At least a third to CPAs who use this for their clients. The last third is about the Chrome browser. So, with two thirds of the book useless to me, I am returning the book and looking for new accounting software. One other problem is that the publishers scrimped on ink so the diagrams and screen shots are difficult to see any detail; kind of grey and blurry.

Comprehensive, Step-by-step guide to QuickBooks online - 30 Day free trial (for end user)

I wanted to compare an online subscription software verses a license software that I am currently using and it appears that an SaaS (Software as a Subscription) does allow for more flexibility in that I can access cash flow, journal, etc. without bringing my laptop or going back to the office computer to look at financials.

This book gives a snapshot of what QuickBook is like and I loved the fact that they are also excel compatible (or I can actually import/export data from an excel spreadsheet).

This book gives a very comprehensive and step by step instructions on how to use the online QuickBook and has information such as Managing List, Managing the outflow / inflow of money i.e. Cash Balance, payroll and handling of Bank & Credit Card Transactions for an End User.

The 3rd part of the book focuses on Managing the Books for the Accountant which is more for an Accountant or a Bookkeepers so I barely read through the segment.

Overall, as with the Dummies book, they are formatted in an easy to read manner with tip and reminder icons and is quite comprehensive for a reader. I also liked that they capture the screen shots so that I can have an idea what to look out for even before I begin the 30-Day free trial session of Quickbooks online, and if I really like it then, I get a 20% off the subscription price which is all very tempting.

If anyone is less than certain about the QBO or QBOA, this is the first book I’d run to ...

There are usually several “Foolish Assumptions” listed in most of the Dummies books I have. They are almost always right on the money. A family member is struggling to learn QuickBooks and is getting nowhere fast. The assumption that would fit him is that he has “some interest in managing the accounts for [his] business online.” It’s a rather simplistic assumption, but if it’s tedious to manage one’s accounts it would seem a lot easier to simply purchase a ledger and go from there.

I’m the “Dummie” type when it comes to learning certain things, and working with this book is giving me a better understanding of how QuickBooks Online works. Now is probably the time to get onboard with the program because the 2015 tax season is about to end. One thing I definitely like are the visuals. I can easily see what the screen looks like as there are screen-like visuals of the actual pages I’m looking at. FYI, if you are uncertain about QuckBooks Online (QBO) or QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA), you can actually start with a free trial if you’d like.

Each section is broken down into doable ones. There are icons that offer up tips, things to remember, cautionary notes, and “web extras” that point the way to extra online contents. It’s as if I have someone standing over my shoulder pointing out pertinent information I need to take a look at. For example, when I’m working with transactions in QBO, I’ll need to remember to confirm each one or change it before it’s included. It’s the simple stuff that helps a lot.

No, this isn’t the missing manual or anything like that, but it QuickBooks Online isn’t intimidating. It can and should be read in consecutive order, but then it can be referenced. There’s a clear, concise index in the back that will help me do just that. I really appreciate a decent index because they can make or break a book. This book asks me questions, makes me think about them, and gives me the answers in an easy-to-understand manner. If anyone is less than certain about the QBO or QBOA, this is the first book I’d run to.

Intriguing 1910 murder mystery and spy novel

Written in 1910, The Illustrious Prince is set in England some time after the Russian-Japanese War which ended in victory for the Japanese in1905. The story revolves around Prince Maiyo, a Japanese nobleman visiting England on behalf of his cousin, the Emperor of Japan, who is seeking a western ally from among the European countries. Two American spies are murdered, an intrepid detective from Scotland Yard is hard on the trail of clues that will lead him to the killer, and the British Home Office is courting Prince Maiyo in the hope that he will advise his cousin the Emperor to choose Great Britain as its ally. As Scotland Yard races to solve the mystery of the murders, several highborn ladies and gentlemen from the British aristocracy befriend the charming Prince and get caught up in the intrigue. What was fascinating for me was the historical and political context of the book which addressed the world stage just prior to1910 through the opinions of the characters in the book (the Americans and Japanese were contemplating war for control of the Pacific at this early stage, Germany was building its powerful war machine, England appeared to be mostly clueless as to the need for a strong non-mercenary infantry, and Japan was definitely flexing its muscles). The book was written four years before the outbreak of WWI and more than 30 years before Pearl Harbor. This is my second book by this prolific author, and I can't wait to read more of them.

A Worthy Copy of a Masterpiece

I got this copy because I wanted a copy of the Hapgood translation in print that was unabridged, and in print. Being unable to find a hardcover with those criteria, I settled for this one.

What a pleasant surprise.

What I actually thought was a paperback was really a "flexiback." I am starting to see more large books being printed in this medium, and it is really neat. It is the best of both worlds really. This cover actually feels like faux leather - surely not cardboard - and it has a matte feel to it that gives a nice amount of grip for holding this big book. The words on the front and the back are actually embossed into the covers, which makes it look quite nice. The pages are of a perfect thickness for the size of this book. They are not too thin, but they are not thick. And also, and most importantly, the book is quite thick - it is genuinely unabridged.

This is one of my favorite books on my shelf. I am really glad I bought it, and at ~$10, it's a magnificent value. I definitely recommend it.

Masterpiece

I never thought on reading Les Miserables. I decided to do so quite some months ago. I'm glad I did. Most of Victor Hugo's reflections are still important and relevant for our days. Before watching the movie or going to the musical, do yourself a favor and read this one out. It is long but it is worth it.

I've had to make room for this as one of my all time favorite books

My only problem with this book was with the large amount of text in French, without footnotes or any other way, outside of sitting with a French/English dictionary to understand the meaning. It would have been nice if they had linked the French words and phrases, which are plentiful, with a built in dictionary just as they did for the English words. I had the same problem with War and Peace, by Tolstoy. The aristocracy in Russia used French most of the time and it was very difficult to get the gist of what was being said. Otherwise, I wish I had read this years ago. Victor Hugo's great novel, some call it the greatest novel of all time, would easily be a good choice if one were stranded on a desert island and could only take one book... for me, this would be it!!!

I concur with previous reviews. Unacceptable copy as it is mising passages - as mentioned before - which creates the most confusion from the very start. Should be removed from the Amazon catalog as it is unbecoming of this vendor. SAVE YOUR TIME. DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

This is a classic mystery by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Unfortunately, this free version lacks several sections vital to solving the mystery. I have only read a couple chapters and have already found that the legend of the Baskervilles, the account of the death of Sir Charles Baskerville and a letter to Sir Henry Baskerville are missing. These omissions render this version useless, and force me to delete it from my library.

Incomplete and Poorly Formatted

Incomplete. This Kindle book contains none of the editorial illustrations that Arthur Conan Doyle sometimes used (such as the dancing-men character code in "The Adventure of the Dancing Men"). A disappointing collection with haphazard formatting, apparently thrown together with OCR, and overpriced even at 99 cents.

Good pulp fiction.

From its introduction to the final paragraph, "A Princess of Mars" will keep the pages turning, regardless of the readers age. When not wondering whether the narrator is recounting a particularly lucid dream, or enjoying the vivid, visceral and evocative imagery, one could find immense enjoyment in the breakneck pacing of the tale being told.

It doesn't hurt that the framework of the story involves science fiction, either. While setting the stage of this 'alien' world, ERB offers a description of the lives of its inhabitants: "...theirs is a hard and pitiless struggle for existence upon a dying planet, the natural resources of which have dwindled to a point where the support of each additional life means an added tax upon the community into which it is thrown." The struggles of the people of Mars, red or green, sound familiar to residents of more Earthly origin.

Never fear, however. While there are certainly cultural norms that are examined and certain traditions that are called into question, those considerations remain subordinate to the action and adventure at the heart of the story. At its core, "A Princess of Mars" is a great Western told in the fashion of a Space Opera. An enjoyable, engaging, quick read that was a very welcome distraction.

"I have never told this story nor shall mortal man see this manuscript until I have passed over for eternity. I know that the average human mind will not believe what it can not grasp......"

Written in 1912 this book is well written for its time and has intrigued countless generations of readers. I get the feeling that this story is being told over a campfire.

Captain Carter is telling the story form memory as an old man of his adventures here on earth and on the planet of Barsoom (Mars). There are encounters with many strain creatures, situations, and yes even a "Princess of Mars."

It is a tail worth reading as he encounters many creatures that are different personas of man, horse, dog, etc.

This is a part is a series by the writer that brought us "Tarzan." The intro to the book alone will capture your imagination.

Extremely poor print quality

Extremely poor print quality: inconsistent margins, table of contents reference page numbers but there aren't any in the book, formatting is unprofessional and strange (entire half pages blank with a paragraph starting in the middle of the following page), feels like it was printed on a home printer. Also, Arial font? Really?

Even if it looked professional, the content is awful. The grammar is often incomprehensible (maybe English wasn't the author's first language?) and the descriptions are inconsistent (it refers to 'enchantments' as 'charms' and says the card will sometimes say "Charm ___" even though there's a picture of a card with "Enchant Creature" right above that paragraph).

Actual quote from the book:

"A Goblin decks is similar to elf decks, aside from with more concentration on plenty of creatures and only a little concentration on enormous creatures. They assault rapidly and tirelessly, however couldn't care less on that they accomplish more than two destruction before dying. Trolls are red, therefore they work best by themselves, as Goblin Charbelcher."

About the Author
Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924), was a mischievous, tomboyish child who grew up to be an unconventional adult. She and her husband were founder members of the socialist Fabian Society and their home became a centre for socialist and literary discussion. Their friends included some of the time’s greatest writers and thinkers, including George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells.

Everything about Edith showed her as a woman trying to break out of the mould demanded by English society at the time – she expressed her individuality through her clothes, hairstyle, lifestyle and her habit of speaking forcefully on almost any subject. She lived her socialism and late in life her charitable deeds brought her close to bankrupcy.

E. Nesbit – she always used the plain initial for her writing and was sometimes thought to be a man – started to write for children after years of successful writing for adult magazines. She was asked to write about her childhood but instead of facts chose to describe her happy girlhood in fiction. The result was books still read today, firm bestsellers for decades. She was brilliant at combining real-life situations with elements of fantasy and humour. Films –such as The Railway Children - have kept her stories in the public eye and her magical fantasies, including Five Children and It, continue to delight each new generation of children.

E. Nesbit did not write for children.

Oh, yes, I quite enjoyed Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet and so on when I was a child; they're magnificent children's books. But listening to the Librivox recording of The Story of the Treasure-Seekers makes it very, very clear that the magnificent Ms. Nesbit had very firmly in mind the parents who would be reading the books aloud at bedtime. One beautiful example is a scene in which an adult abruptly rises from his seat and walks away to stand at the window with his back to the children in his office. The narrator says he believes the man was trying to conceal his emotions. Which is very true; the emotions, however, were not what the narrator thought. But the narrator, and any child reading or listening who has utter faith that all is just as the narrator perceives it, may believe one thing; the beautiful layer of comedy in the moment is reserved for the grown-ups.

Thank goodness we get something; in almost everything else the children are the fortunate ones.

The Bastable children possess an innocence which I'm very much afraid is impossible for even a twelve-year-old today. I've seen comments out there amongst the reviews about "imperialist overtones" and casual racism. Thing is, though, this was first published in 1899, and like it or not the world was a very different place then, and as I read it even what could be considered racist has an innocence that keeps it from being offensive. The children are given to understand that a visitor is an Indian, and - fed on adventure novels - assume Amerind, and ask him about beavers. He's India Indian, though, and has no information on such creatures. I honestly don't see how the children's honest excitement about and sympathy for someone from far away who describes himself as a poor broken-down fellow (which they also take literally) can be translated as racist, especially in 1899, and the one extremely unfortunate exclamation that can be (the same as is found in L.M. Montgomery's A Tangled Web) was, sadly, a much more common epithet a hundred years ago.

These are the sort of fictional children that make me despair over today's kids: imaginative, well-read, well-spoken, thoughtful under the childish self-centeredness, and self-sufficient; they make today's kids (American, at least) look like Neanderthals. They're not perfect little angels - E. Nesbit was never stupid. But they do set a ludicrously high standard.

Dora, the eldest (at 13 or 14?), comes off as a bit of a prig (though this is dealt with in a later chapter in such a way that it made me cry), desperately trying to maintain some moral high ground in a horde of siblings who think it would be absolutely smashing if there were still highwaymen on the heath - or, even better, if they could be highwaymen on the heath. Her objection is that it's "wrong" - as in illegal and people hang for such things, not so much as in the victims of the highwaymen didn't think it was quite so smashing. The again-innocent bloodthirstiness of the kids is remarkable, and just fun.

Oswald, the oldest boy at 12 and (you might guess, or you might not!) the narrator of the story, is very nearly as brave and honourable as he wants to appear, and very straightforward. It's rather lovely to see him reluctantly, realistically doing the right thing throughout the book, proceeding quietly and alone when practical - the older ones all do that, shouldering responsibility and striving to make things right when they go wrong. The fierce affection and loyalty among the siblings is, like their father's poverty and worries, never explicitly stated: it doesn't have to be. It is shown, not told.

The four younger children - Noel and Alice and H.O. and Dickie, ranging down to I believe six years old - are every one expected by their elder siblings to be just as sharp and responsible and willing and able to contribute as Oswald and Dora. Some allowances are made for their extreme youth, but for the most part they are equal partners in the treasure-seeking, receiving an equal share in any profits - though sometimes excused by protective siblings from punishments.

I don't remember E. Nesbit reducing me to tears in the past. This did. And, yes, I laughed out loud. I missed the magic element of some of the other books - but only at first. It didn't take long to realize that most of the magic of E. Nesbit's writing is actually in E. Nesbit's writing.

To that point: "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally - and often far more - worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." ~ C.S. Lewis. I look forward to reading E. Nesbit when I'm fifty, and beyond.

The Bravest of People

Point: A true view of a person can be seen when he acts upon what he believes to be true, not necessarily what has been "proved" to be true.

Path: The Bastable children, 6 in total, are in search of restoring the lost fortunes of the good Bastable family name. Their mother died several years earlier, and the business of their father is not good. They each concoct a way in which they believe that they will be able to restore the lost fortunes. Chapter by chapter they each try their ways at encountering treasure. Their full imaginations carry the reader through a world in their minds which is perhaps much more real than the world which I have chosen to see.

Agreement: The imagination is not a hindrance, or a childish bane. It is the lens through which we see our world, the interpretive grid by which we understand what is beyond.

Personal App: Some of the bravest people in this world are under the age of 10. Those who act nobly upon what they believe, not necessarily what has been proved to be true, are those with real courage. Anyone can walk to the bathroom at night because they have convinced themselves that no one is in the house. But the child who walks stiffly down the hallway when he is convinced that there is a robber in the house, he is the braver.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would have liked to see the ending changed to be more of a recognition of the true fortunes they possessed in their imagination and family. I laughed at parts, nearly cried at others.

Nesbit's Funniest and Most Accessible Book

So, here it is - a Kindle freebie with loads of positive reviews, but it's from 1899 and you suspect the positive reviews may just be filtered through the gauzy haze of happy childhood reading memories. Is it worth a try? I suggest the answer is "Yes".

Edith Nesbit was not a Victorian novelist with either a tendency toward vapors or an intimidating moralistic streak. She was most certainly a pip - opinionated, idiosyncratic, courageous, and undeterred by lack of precedent. She basically pioneered the writing of children's books that featured realistic children, honest humor, and respect for young readers. She avoided morals in favor of plain common sense, and she understood that siblings could love and support each other even while bickering. There is nothing stodgy about her books except for stodgy things and people she makes a bit of fun of.

Many of her more famous books are fantasies or have an element of "Boy's Own" adventure, but this book could readily be put forth as her funniest. There is broad humor, witty commentary, irony, and dry as dust understatement that readers of many different ages and abilities will pick up on to a greater or lesser degree. While you might expect it, the writing is not terribly formal or complex, just a bit more structured. It would be easy enough even for a younger reader to get into the flow of Nesbit's elegant and engaging, but light and very reader-friendly writing style.

The Bastable kids are good, funny, bright kids. They are also brave and honorable. They have the kid equivalent of style. Even if they do mess up a bit it's usually because they tried to do too much rather than too little. Their conversations, both among themselves and with adults, are as fresh and vivid as though they took place yesterday and any of the Bastables could slip right now into a middle grade school daze novel and fit right in - that's how good Nesbit was.

So, well worth a toss and likely to be a winner.
