About the Author

Kevin M. White has been an Apple Certified Trainer since 2000 and is a regular presenter at industry events. Kevin co-authored his first book in 2005 and has subsequently authored or co-authored several books including OS X Support Essentials 10.9 and Managing Apple Devices. Kevin also serves the Apple community through his company, Macjutsu Inc., which is dedicated to sharing knowledge of the “Apple way.”

Gordon Davisson has spent over 20 years working with Apple hardware and software and designing and implementing networking solutions. An Apple Certified System Administrator, Gordon has also been an Apple Certified Trainer since 2002 and is currently a consultant and instructor teaching multiple Mac and OS X courses. Gordon was the co-author of OS X Support Essentials 10.9.

Clear and understandable guide to the Yosemite 10.10 Apple Operating System. This is a guide requiring some technical competence as it is intended for training technical support personnel (and for preparing for a certification exam), but it is surprisingly "readable" with strong adherence to topics, providing relevant information without swamping the reader with confusing tangents (as is all too common in technical books). Even for those who just want a more detailed understanding of the OS without plans for certification, etc., it is a useful book that helps to provide behind-the-scenes context for much that users take for granted on an Apple computer. The book is never boring and contains many "tips" and shortcuts that are useful even for those who skip the most technical parts. Excellent book.

Good reference book to dig deep into OS X

This is good at telling you how to get under the hood on Mac OS X 10,10 (Yosemite). Not too dry or hard to understand. I found it easy to find what I needed to know. Saved me a few calls to tech support. Lacks the humor or appeal of David Pogue's Missing Manual books. Far more comprehensive though.

Almost a century after its original publication, Thorstein Veblen's work is as fresh and relevant as ever. Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class is in the tradition of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations and Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan, yet it provides a surprisingly contemporary look at American economics and society. Establishing such terms as "conspicuous consumption" and "pecuniary emulation," Veblen's most famous work has become an archetype not only of economic theory, but of historical and sociological thought as well. As sociologist Alan Wolfe writes in his Introduction, Veblen "skillfully . . . wrote a book that will be read so long as the rich are different from the rest of us; which, if the future is anything like the past, they always will be."

About the Author
Thorstein Bunde Veblen, (1857–1929) was an American sociologist and economist and a primary mentor, along with John R. Commons, of the institutional economics movement. Besides his technical work he was a popular and witty critic of capitalism, as shown by his best known book The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899). Veblen is famous in the History of economic thought for combining a Darwinian evolutionary perspective with his new institutionalist approach to economic analysis. He combined sociology with economics in his masterpiece, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), arguing there was a basic distinction between the productiveness of "industry," run by engineers, which manufactures goods, and the parasitism of "business," which exists only to make profits for a leisure class. The chief activity of the leisure class was "conspicuous consumption", and their economic contribution is "waste," activity that contributes nothing to productivity. The American economy was therefore made inefficient and corrupt by the businessmen, though he never made that claim explicit. Veblen believed that technological advances were the driving force behind cultural change, but, unlike many contemporaries, he refused to connect change with progress. Although Veblen was sympathetic to state ownership of industry, he had a low opinion of workers and the labor movement and was hostile toward Marxism. As a leading intellectual of the Progressive Era, his sweeping attack on production for profit and his stress on the wasteful role of consumption for status greatly influenced socialist thinkers and engineers seeking a non-Marxist critique of capitalism. Experts complained his ideas, while brilliantly presented, were crude, gross, fuzzy, and imprecise; others complained he was a wacky eccentric. Scholars continue to debate exactly what he meant in his convoluted, ironic and satiric essays; he made heavy use of examples of primitive societies, but many examples were pure invention.

Is economics allowed to be this much fun?

It's true to say that Veblen's book is one of the great classics of economic theory; however, such a description suggests (at least to non-economists like myself) that the book will be either dull or remorselessly technical. On the contrary, "The Theory of the Leisure Class" is stylishly written, endlessly startling (for example, Veblen analyses religion as an outgrowth of the gambling instinct), and very, very funny. Its expose of "conspicuous consumption" (yes, Veblen was the one who invented this famous concept) is as relevant today as it was in 1899, if not more so. Whether or not you agree with all that he says, it's thought-provoking and exciting stuff.

VERY FRESH 100 YEARS OLD BOOK

This opus by Veblen exposes the real meaning of the pecuniary advancement of the working and merchant classes, and the formation of elites based mostly upon money and asset valuation. The transfiguration of the traditional social and individual ethical values that this phenomenon produced, is portraited with clarity and sarcastic intelligence by the author in the book, first published in 1899.
Now a classic of economic theory, as well as a text book of social science, it describes the tendencies of consumerism, leisure and the "materialization" of the ideals of the aspiring new princes (or noveau rich) of society. Veblen's vibrant satire of the tendency of the modern individual to believe that real accomplishment is all about aquiring a condition of ostentatious wealth and status, and his analisis of the inception of modern class structure in America, still stand, a century after, as recommended reading for historians and economists.
If you are a fervent follower of advertisement, fashion, "glamour" and other modern expressions of consumerism , then you will find a surprisingly fresh portrait of yourself in this book. It worries me that the leisure class and its shallow views and values as described by Veblen, may still today represent elites in America and their religion, as analyzed by professor Lash in his last book "The Revolt of the Elites". I highly recommend Veblen's best book, to scholars and sociologists at large.

Known by his contemporaries as the only social theorist to apply Darwin critically, in 1899 Thorstein Veblen published The Theory of the Leisure Class: A Economic Study of Institutions, which was to become the basis from which all further American leisure history and theory stemmed. In his study, Veblen is primarily concerned with the "new rich," whom he regards as social parasites that retard the growth of modern life. Thorstein Veblen wrote The Theory of the Leisure Class from a perspective that was largely isolated from his own culture, which either aided in his understanding of the Leisure Class or perhaps negatively influenced his opinions due to his exclusion from it. In The Theory of the Leisure Class, Veblen essentially confines man and woman's existence on the planet as a struggle to change and adapt with the growth of their communities. Through this belief, Veblen develops a theme that amounts to the idea of a certain "dominant" type of individual. Missing manual series by Pogue are excellent references. Switching is 50 pages shorter than the OS X Yosemite book but covers much of the same content. Focus is helpful to Windows sufferers who have decided to jump ship. Returned my copy from Amazon due to shipment damage from poor packaging. Will buy today for $10 more from Barnes.

Moving on

This is an invaluable book - to me, at any rate. It has information everywhere. To use it, I have had to read it in pieces and continually refer back to it. What is missing is a chapter on comparison of the underlying structures of Mac and non-Mac (primarily 'PC') systems. The move away from a strictly hierarchical structure in PC's etc. allows greater flexibility is storing and retrieving information and it would help understanding by showing a comparison of how tithe same task would be carried out in each system.

As a DOS and Windows user for 30 years, I found this manual to be well focused on the essential contrasts tween the PC and the Mac. Once I plowed through it, I was navigating a new Mac Book Pro with confidence. It has a thorough and accurate index, which is essential for quick look reference. Said' covers all the aspect in this thorough guide on how to build the perfect presentation. I will be using it to conduct a few upcoming sales pitches. This book is a complete step by step manual for anyone looking to get started with Prezi! The book is filled with images and instructions that I found it so easy to learn and follow! Great Work.

Well, this is indeed the MOST UP TO DATE guide about Prezi in the market and it's really easy and simple to follow the steps in the book. Prezi is a new software one can use to do presentations and it looks pretty cool. You can customise the themes and the interface is user-friendly. I think it will be a change from using Microsoft Powerpoint to do up my presentations in the standard manner. If you need to do some business presentations, this is a book you may want to peruse.

Having felt the need to revisit some of the books read during my early teen years I started with this one. Although an interesting read - I was born and bred in South America, so I read it with a critical eye - I was disappointed by his somewhat patronizing attitude towards south americans. I do give him full marks though for his research about the background, but think that his Winnetou books, which I shall take up again in the not too distant future , are by far better.

This is NOT the way to learn C++

TL;DR If you are buying this book to learn C++, then you are going to learn how to write "bad" C++. And the UE 4 content is outdated .I bought this primarily for learning Unreal Engine 4 rather than C++, but I have a huge problem with the content of the book as it is intended for _learning C++_ as the title reads.

Do yourself a massive favor and read a book like "Principles and Practice Using C++" 2nd Edition or "Jumping Into C++" to learn "modern" C++ using C++11 and C++14. Be wary of something that first teaches you arrays instead of vectors, printf() instead of cout, and new and delete as some examples. There are better ways and you should learn how to use those first as they are simply smarter, safer, and will lead to much less problematic code that turns C++ off to newcomers. By learning these outdated coding practices which are probably used since they are quick to show examples of and cram in before the Unreal stuff really starts, you are doing yourself a huge disservice because you are going to pick up bad habits and have to unlearn much later in order to write better code. And that's just a poor way to start learning a language.

I'm still working my way through this book, but I wanted to post an early review as an important caveat to potential buys --

KINDLE USERS BEWARE -- As others have mentioned, there are many issues with the formatting of the Kindle version. I have minor experience in many languages so I recognized the problems, but if anyone picks up the Kindle version of this book as a true beginner's 1st step, they may be very confused as to why their code isn't working.

As an example: For the very first "Hello World", the below is given as the first two lines in the Kindle version (I checked on multiple devices, this problem existed everywhere):

// instead of std:: cout int main()

Which should be formatted as such:

First-time coders are going to run into issues compiling and code not working when they likely overlook these formatting errors.

I have not seen the same complaints in reference to the print version -- but if you are truly NEW to coding, I highly suggest you avoid the Kindle edition at this time.

Great Intro Into C++ and UE4. A Valuable Resource for Beginners to C++ Or Anyone Looking to Use C++ in Unreal Engine 4

Right here is a book with a clearly defined goal and an excellent execution. Learning C++ by Creating Games with UE4 by William Sherif takes you on a journey from being a total blank in C++ to coding some basic features of a 3D game. Even though I have been coding in C++ for years, I still enjoy reading novice level texts as sometimes they can teach you a new way of thinking about familiar problems. For me, it’s also important to have good book recommendations (especially for people starting out), and I actually discovered this book from a member of the Unreal Engine community looking for a review. So here it is.

William Sherif starts the book proper, with how to setup a project using either Visual Studio or XCode. This is actually a great design, and it’s thoughtful to include both operating systems (Linux is not officially supported by Epic yet, so I can’t knock the author on that one). When first starting with C++ programming, probably the hardest thing is not the syntax but understanding how to configure the project and settings in the IDE, so I like that this was covered first. Next Sherif moves onto the basics of programming: variables and memory (numbers and pointers), control flow (if, else, equality and comparison), looping (while and for loops), functions and macros, variable scoping, objects and classes, inheritance, and finishing up with dynamic memory allocation and arrays. Really quite a good foundation for learning C++. I found the explanation to be clear and concise, and the author did a good job of easing the reader into the information. C++ is a huge topic to cover, and there are volumes of text many times this size going deeper into the intricacies of the language. I wouldn’t actually fault the book for this, I think it’s a strength. Some novices may be overwhelmed by C++ if they start with something like Stroustrup’s 1,300 page tome. So I would say this is a great introduction to the language, and a great refresher if you’re coming back after a while.

The second half of the book is focused on Unreal development in particular. The author opens by discussing templates and containers in UE4, including some basic ones like TArray, TSet, TMap and then discussing the STL versions of these and how they differ in Unreal. He follows up with the first real example in the engine: an inventory system (with a UI) and the ability to pickup items in the world. I like this approach as it’s a real tangible task that many games would include. The author then shows how to code NPCs that are able to display a text message to the player. Next, Sherif talks about how to create monsters – basically enemy characters that can chase and attack the player. He closes with adding spell casting (including the code and setup of the particle system).

So this is not a book that will show you “How to Make a Complete AAA Game in 24 Hours” but I don’t think that was the intention. What the author does is introduce C++ at the right pace, and also show how to get started with applying that knowledge to developing games in Unreal 4. In some ways, it almost feels like two separate books: one on basic C++ programming, and another on coding in C++ for Unreal Engine 4. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and I think both parts are worthwhile. Really, this book would be most valuable to someone that has little experience with C++ and is also new to using C++ in UE4. If you are already a C++ pro, the first half of the book may seem too basic. However, I think the Unreal coverage can be useful to developers of varying skill levels.

Overall I enjoyed Learning C++ by Creating Games with UE4 and would entirely recommend it to anyone interested in gaining knowledge in C++ for Unreal. To be honest, this is one of the only books out there on the topic right now, so it sort of stands alone. I believe it’s taken me a little over a week to read the 342 page text. Certainly, it doesn’t cover everything you need to know (not even close) but it’s a great place to start. I’d also add that I read the book on the Kindle Fire HDX, and the formatting looked pretty good. The price on the e-book was also much more affordable, so now may be a good chance to upgrade if you’ve still been reading on ink and paper.
