Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. A very good mother (of five now grown and professionally successful sons), I intend to be a good grandmother as well whenever that part of my life arrives. I'm not a general fan of all fairy tails in usual forms. But Alice and Little Red Riding Hood have excellent teaching potential. [Oh; DO see the 2010 Alice movie (well, to be more current... "film" -- the one with Johnny Depp).] The copy of this book I received wasn't in perfect condition. For instance, the gold edges seemed a little worn -- although it's brand new -- but that will happen with some use anyway.

WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!

This was one of my favorite books as a child - I used to listen to the record (read by Ray Bolger) over and over again. L. Frank Baum out does himself in this one. It is every bit as good as all of the Wizard of Oz books he also penned. Truly magnificent! Read this one to your kids (or just to yourself)!

The Magic Cloak still envokes childhood memories

This is one of those books that you remember reading in front of a fire, and for little girl you probably envisionsed actually slipping on the coat made by fairies. I read this about 20 years ago and I can still summon up the feelings I got reading it, just by hearing, "Queen Xixi." I noticed this book by chance and decided I needed to re-own it. Please read this to you child, even if he happens to be a boy. All of us love fairies, we just haven't seen one, but this book allows us to.

Baum and his incredible, magical prose

Baum presents a high fantasy, set in the rival kingdoms of Ix and Noland. Central to the story is a magic cloak woven by fairies, and the mishaps and adventures that various people experience due to the cloak's existence. Baum, as it is known, is a genius when it comes to story-telling, and his non-stop inventiveness and cleverness has no doubt placed him among the pantheon of children's authors throughout history. This book is highly recommended, not only for children, but for everyone because of its sheer brilliance.

Buy with extreme caution.

I'm giving this book 4 stars because it was in fact, very helpful in studying for the CSWE exam. (TOO helpful, in fact. See below) It gets -1 star because I felt that for a book that's supposed to help you study for the EXPERT level exam, it was written in a manner that seemed to be explaining the steps to a first time user, which became very draining and cumbersome at times.

WARNING: This book is not simply a study guide for the CSWE exam concepts, it is in fact a walk-through of the exam itself. The practice problems are basically exactly the exam problems. I warn you about this because I've been a SolidWorks user for 9 years now, worked through my professional level exam and 4 advanced topics and was excited for the culmination of all that work with this exam. However, when I began the CSWE exam I was terribly disappointed that I had already seen, and worked through those exact problems. It really ruined the exam for me. Both because I look forward to the challenges and stress of the exams, and because this book cheapens the value of the certification itself. Unfortunately, I'll now never know if I had what it took to pass the exam on my own merit because I had already worked through all its problems :(

If you want to know if you truly deserve to be a CSWE, or you actually enjoy taking the exams. Don't buy or use this book.

Great investment to Pass you CSWE

If you want you CSWE you should get this book, i bought it studied it and took my test got 100%. but you will need to take it soon i would have to think that Solidworks will be switching up there test soon it been the same since 2010. then this book as a study guide will be not very helpful.

Great investment

This book was a great help as I passed the CSWE with over an hour to spare and only missing 1 question. I would recommend going through the book twice as you will see these problems on the exam. If you are comfortable solving the problems then you should ace the test. Book was a great purchase and I now am 1 of 2382 CSWE's worldwide.

Over a quarter of a century she is repeatedly victimized by circumstance, temperament, and most particularly the fact of her sex. Yet the triumph of the book lies in her incorrigibly loving nature. Cast out by society as well as by her family, she none the less fosters a far deeper understanding of relationships than anyone else. It is no surprise that she was her author's favourite heroine.

Jennie Has-hardt

Truly, Jenny Gerhardt has a lot of heart.
Though she makes some bad decisions and often lacks the confindence that could have reinvented her in the magnified binocular-eyes of society, Dreiser's love for the character shines and we, the readers, grow to love her also. Several glimmers of why Dreiser is the transcendent novelist that he is peek out from the fast moving story of Jennie Gerhardt.
"She was not, like so many, endeavoring to put the ocean into a tea-cup or to tie up the shifting universe in a mess of strings called law."
"The loveliness of seventeen is centuries old. That is why passion is almost sad."
"So this little household drifted along quietly and dreamily indeed, but always with the undercurrent of feeling which ran so still because it was so deep."
I admit to you, I have never been very interested by the sometimes dry prose offered in the writing of earlier time periods. But Dreiser seems to me a rare gem in the world of early 20th century fiction.
However, the one reason I am writing a 4 star review is because of the ending of this novel. After several mini-climaxes, the book ends. --just like that. With a grim display of "if only". And although most, if not all of us, identify with that theme, I felt like I MUST have read 366 pages for something other than that.
However, I would still recommend it. It is a delicate work of art whose power and beauty cannot be denied.

Honest, truthful and rewarding

This was the first novel I ever read by Theodore Dreiser. The reason why I selected it was because in the film, American Splendor, Harvey Pekar mentions the novel and he's shown finishing it in the film. I wanted to know and feel what Mr. Pekar felt. And I believe I did. The tragedy of Jennie Gerhardt's life resonated with me. I was anguished over Jenny's loneliness and the fact that Lester could never make up his mind to marry her. I cried. Dreiser's observation of turn of the century high society and their view of the poor as pariahs still seems relevant today. We still live in a time of social and financial inequality.
Dreiser's writing style is definitely not modern. And his phrasing is not structured in the active voice. It's more long-winded. You need to enjoy his descriptions and his philosophical speculations that do make the novel more meaningful. You can't take the social critic out of Dreiser. If you can make time in your life to sit down and read this novel, you will come away having been moved by Dreiser's heartfelt portrayal of the human condition. May each and everyone one of you be as lucky to love as deeply as Jennie did.

A girl punished for daring to love men above her class.

It seems each time I finish one of Dresier's works I think it is my favorite. Such is the case with Jennie Gerhardt, at least until my next Dresier. This heart-wrenching saga takes the reader through Jennie's life from cleaning houses with her mother, bearing a child by a US Senator and living and loving a man beyond her society class. Lester (the man she loves after the Senator), for his part, is unwilling to marry Jennie and is cut-off from the family and it's millions for loving someone "below" his class in society. Jennie remains true to herself, following her heart and the dicates of a harsh scoiety. She makes amendes with her father and is the only child to nurture him through his final days and death. She takes her daughter away from Chicago and leaves Lester so he can reclaim his family fortune. Her daughter dies, leaving her alone but the strength of Jennie's character comes through when she adopts orphans, for if she isn't nurturing she isn't living. Dreiser drives home his theme of fate and how some can dictate it while others are a slave to it. But even this distinction isn't black and white. Lester seems not to care what fate has in store for him until he takes it into his onw hands and marries the society girl he arguably should have married before he hooked up with Jennie. Alas, Jennie never mastered her fate. She was punished for loving two men from the upper-crust of scoiety instead of taking the crusts that high-living classes would toss her.

About the Author

Becky Stern is the Director of Wearable Electronics at Adafruit. Each week she publishes a new do-it-yourself craft+tech project tutorial and video and also hosts the YouTube Live show "Wearable Electronics with Becky Stern." She's been combining textiles with electronics since 2005, and helps develop the Adafruit FLORA wearable Arduino-compatible product line. She's been shooting video since age five, and sewing since age eight. Becky studied at Parsons The New School for Design and Arizona State University and teaches at School of Visual Arts' Products of Design grad program.

Tyler Cooper is a creative engineer at Adafruit Industries, where he helps develop the Adafruit Learning System, and other Adafruit learning tools. In 2010, he co-founded the open-source hardware company Coobro Labs. He's also co-owner of the Minneapolis, Minnesota, makerspace Nordeast Makers.

Made for your first project, but with great tips for pros.

As Wearable Tech books go, this one is stellar. Just the right mix of How To and Why it works that way. The FLORA has become the standard in wearable design thanks to it's on board USB and LIPO battery ports. Becky and Tyler have really created a great book that although it says "Getting Started" on the cover, really covers all aspects of working with a Flora. (Including Analog Input )
It covers washing your wearable project which makes it 5 stars.

Great intro to wearable electronics

Becky Stern is a champion. She is pioneering the use of microcontrollers that are embedded in the things you wear and she's sharing her progress so you can take the ideas further. This book is an overview of the technology and a project to get you going on your way. It's a quick read and a good introduction to wearable electronics, sensors, and the tools and skills you'll need to make your project take off.

Ruthless and Romantic

Mr Stirling Deane is the CEO of highly succcessful mining company, based in South Africa, and listed on the London Stock Exchange. The basis of his fortune is the Little Anna Gold Mine, which he brought to successful production early in his career. His is engaged to Lady Olive Nunnelly, and is the envy of all of society.

He is threatened with ruin when a old enemy - Richard Sinclair- shows up in London with what appears to be a legitimate prior deed to the mine. Deane confides in Basil Rowan, a failed and dying miner, who undertakes to negotiate with Sinclair. Sinclair is killed, and Rowan imprisoned for murder. Deane meets with Rowan's sister, Winnifred, who begs him to help her brother who is sentenced to death.

My Childhood Love

All of us have that book which we remember fondly from childhood, that one book we saw in the school library which we wish were ours so we could keep it in our own private place and read over and over again. Van Loon's Story of Mankind is that book for me. Van Loon does a tremendous service to the study of history. Even though this is a childrens book Van Loon does not ignore or alter the facts of history so that he can comfort instead of educate the child who may be reading the book. And even though the book reads like one big bedtime story, Van Loon always tries to remain objective and never force his opinion on the reader. When he talks about Napolean he makes it very obvious that he does not like the man or what he stood for, but he also tells the reader that his grandfather fought alongside the man and that he(Van Loon) would have probably fought alongside him as well, that's just the kind of man Napolean was. At an age where you will believe almost anything told to you, especially by a man who has written a book, Van Loon tries to give the child both an appreciation for history and a sense of objectivity about events. This was one of the first books, if not the first book, that showed me that everything is not always black and white, good and evil, but shades and gradations of good and evil. I read this to all my nephews, and when they don't know what to read I hand them this book, hoping it will make them a wiser person for listening to Van Loon's lessons.

Why Van Loon Is Desperately Needed Today

THE STORY OF MANKIND is a delight. Contrast its wit and insight with the typical history textbooks to which our young are routinely subjected--as ably described by education historian Diane Ravitch:
"The dullness of history textbooks is legendary. I am involved right now in a study of history textbooks, and I must say that I have trouble reading them because of their jumbled, jangly quality. I also have trouble lifting them because they are so heavy and overstuffed with trivia and pedagogical aids. With one or maybe two exceptions, most textbooks put more emphasis on visual glitz than on the quality of their text. By the time that these books emerge from the political process that is called state adoption, they lack voice and narrative power. They lack the very qualities that make historical writing exciting. Our history textbooks are distracting, and I don't know how students learn anything from them."
Van Loon's book won the first Newberry Prize, quite an achievement for a book on world history. "The Story of Mankind" remains a great read for any child thirteen and up (and up).

Just-in-time printing gone very wrong

This book is no longer being printed the old-fashioned way. This version is now a just-in-time book. Which means ALL THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE MISSING. Even the ones that are necessary for the text to make sense. This version of this book is a total rip off. Some one got really sloppy and didn't deliver a complete file for printing. I recommend buying a used version of this book.
