A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

A Princess of Mars is a science fiction novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a sub-genre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. This vision of Mars was based on the work of the astronomer Percival Lowell, whose ideas were widely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Good pulp fiction.
By Peter Carrier
From its introduction to the final paragraph, "A Princess of Mars" will keep the pages turning, regardless of the readers age. When not wondering whether the narrator is recounting a particularly lucid dream, or enjoying the vivid, visceral and evocative imagery, one could find immense enjoyment in the breakneck pacing of the tale being told.

It doesn't hurt that the framework of the story involves science fiction, either. While setting the stage of this 'alien' world, ERB offers a description of the lives of its inhabitants: "...theirs is a hard and pitiless struggle for existence upon a dying planet, the natural resources of which have dwindled to a point where the support of each additional life means an added tax upon the community into which it is thrown." The struggles of the people of Mars, red or green, sound familiar to residents of more Earthly origin.

Never fear, however. While there are certainly cultural norms that are examined and certain traditions that are called into question, those considerations remain subordinate to the action and adventure at the heart of the story. At its core, "A Princess of Mars" is a great Western told in the fashion of a Space Opera. An enjoyable, engaging, quick read that was a very welcome distraction.

A Princess of Barsoom
By bernie
"I have never told this story nor shall mortal man see this manuscript until I have passed over for eternity. I know that the average human mind will not believe what it can not grasp......"

Written in 1912 this book is well written for its time and has intrigued countless generations of readers. I get the feeling that this story is being told over a campfire.

Captain Carter is telling the story form memory as an old man of his adventures here on earth and on the planet of Barsoom (Mars). There are encounters with many strain creatures, situations, and yes even a "Princess of Mars."

It is a tail worth reading as he encounters many creatures that are different personas of man, horse, dog, etc.

This is a part is a series by the writer that brought us "Tarzan." The intro to the book alone will capture your imagination.

Extremely poor print quality
By marikajean
Extremely poor print quality: inconsistent margins, table of contents reference page numbers but there aren't any in the book, formatting is unprofessional and strange (entire half pages blank with a paragraph starting in the middle of the following page), feels like it was printed on a home printer. Also, Arial font? Really?

Even if it looked professional, the content is awful. The grammar is often incomprehensible (maybe English wasn't the author's first language?) and the descriptions are inconsistent (it refers to 'enchantments' as 'charms' and says the card will sometimes say "Charm ___" even though there's a picture of a card with "Enchant Creature" right above that paragraph).

Actual quote from the book:

"A Goblin decks is similar to elf decks, aside from with more concentration on plenty of creatures and only a little concentration on enormous creatures. They assault rapidly and tirelessly, however couldn't care less on that they accomplish more than two destruction before dying. Trolls are red, therefore they work best by themselves, as Goblin Charbelcher."

Such a waste of money. If you have questions about Magic or need a reference guide, use the free mtgsalvation website.

About the Author
Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924), was a mischievous, tomboyish child who grew up to be an unconventional adult. She and her husband were founder members of the socialist Fabian Society and their home became a centre for socialist and literary discussion. Their friends included some of the time’s greatest writers and thinkers, including George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells.

Everything about Edith showed her as a woman trying to break out of the mould demanded by English society at the time – she expressed her individuality through her clothes, hairstyle, lifestyle and her habit of speaking forcefully on almost any subject. She lived her socialism and late in life her charitable deeds brought her close to bankrupcy.

E. Nesbit – she always used the plain initial for her writing and was sometimes thought to be a man – started to write for children after years of successful writing for adult magazines. She was asked to write about her childhood but instead of facts chose to describe her happy girlhood in fiction. The result was books still read today, firm bestsellers for decades. She was brilliant at combining real-life situations with elements of fantasy and humour. Films –such as The Railway Children - have kept her stories in the public eye and her magical fantasies, including Five Children and It, continue to delight each new generation of children.

E. Nesbit did not write for children.
By Tracet
Oh, yes, I quite enjoyed Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet and so on when I was a child; they're magnificent children's books. But listening to the Librivox recording of The Story of the Treasure-Seekers makes it very, very clear that the magnificent Ms. Nesbit had very firmly in mind the parents who would be reading the books aloud at bedtime. One beautiful example is a scene in which an adult abruptly rises from his seat and walks away to stand at the window with his back to the children in his office. The narrator says he believes the man was trying to conceal his emotions. Which is very true; the emotions, however, were not what the narrator thought. But the narrator, and any child reading or listening who has utter faith that all is just as the narrator perceives it, may believe one thing; the beautiful layer of comedy in the moment is reserved for the grown-ups.

Thank goodness we get something; in almost everything else the children are the fortunate ones.

The Bastable children possess an innocence which I'm very much afraid is impossible for even a twelve-year-old today. I've seen comments out there amongst the reviews about "imperialist overtones" and casual racism. Thing is, though, this was first published in 1899, and like it or not the world was a very different place then, and as I read it even what could be considered racist has an innocence that keeps it from being offensive. The children are given to understand that a visitor is an Indian, and - fed on adventure novels - assume Amerind, and ask him about beavers. He's India Indian, though, and has no information on such creatures. I honestly don't see how the children's honest excitement about and sympathy for someone from far away who describes himself as a poor broken-down fellow (which they also take literally) can be translated as racist, especially in 1899, and the one extremely unfortunate exclamation that can be (the same as is found in L.M. Montgomery's A Tangled Web) was, sadly, a much more common epithet a hundred years ago.

These are the sort of fictional children that make me despair over today's kids: imaginative, well-read, well-spoken, thoughtful under the childish self-centeredness, and self-sufficient; they make today's kids (American, at least) look like Neanderthals. They're not perfect little angels - E. Nesbit was never stupid. But they do set a ludicrously high standard.

Dora, the eldest (at 13 or 14?), comes off as a bit of a prig (though this is dealt with in a later chapter in such a way that it made me cry), desperately trying to maintain some moral high ground in a horde of siblings who think it would be absolutely smashing if there were still highwaymen on the heath - or, even better, if they could be highwaymen on the heath. Her objection is that it's "wrong" - as in illegal and people hang for such things, not so much as in the victims of the highwaymen didn't think it was quite so smashing. The again-innocent bloodthirstiness of the kids is remarkable, and just fun.

Oswald, the oldest boy at 12 and (you might guess, or you might not!) the narrator of the story, is very nearly as brave and honourable as he wants to appear, and very straightforward. It's rather lovely to see him reluctantly, realistically doing the right thing throughout the book, proceeding quietly and alone when practical - the older ones all do that, shouldering responsibility and striving to make things right when they go wrong. The fierce affection and loyalty among the siblings is, like their father's poverty and worries, never explicitly stated: it doesn't have to be. It is shown, not told.

The four younger children - Noel and Alice and H.O. and Dickie, ranging down to I believe six years old - are every one expected by their elder siblings to be just as sharp and responsible and willing and able to contribute as Oswald and Dora. Some allowances are made for their extreme youth, but for the most part they are equal partners in the treasure-seeking, receiving an equal share in any profits - though sometimes excused by protective siblings from punishments.

I don't remember E. Nesbit reducing me to tears in the past. This did. And, yes, I laughed out loud. I missed the magic element of some of the other books - but only at first. It didn't take long to realize that most of the magic of E. Nesbit's writing is actually in E. Nesbit's writing.

To that point: "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally - and often far more - worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." ~ C.S. Lewis. I look forward to reading E. Nesbit when I'm fifty, and beyond.

The Bravest of People
By S. Grotzke
Point: A true view of a person can be seen when he acts upon what he believes to be true, not necessarily what has been "proved" to be true.

Path: The Bastable children, 6 in total, are in search of restoring the lost fortunes of the good Bastable family name. Their mother died several years earlier, and the business of their father is not good. They each concoct a way in which they believe that they will be able to restore the lost fortunes. Chapter by chapter they each try their ways at encountering treasure. Their full imaginations carry the reader through a world in their minds which is perhaps much more real than the world which I have chosen to see.

Sources: An imagination alive with the fire of youth.

Agreement: The imagination is not a hindrance, or a childish bane. It is the lens through which we see our world, the interpretive grid by which we understand what is beyond.

Personal App: Some of the bravest people in this world are under the age of 10. Those who act nobly upon what they believe, not necessarily what has been proved to be true, are those with real courage. Anyone can walk to the bathroom at night because they have convinced themselves that no one is in the house. But the child who walks stiffly down the hallway when he is convinced that there is a robber in the house, he is the braver.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would have liked to see the ending changed to be more of a recognition of the true fortunes they possessed in their imagination and family. I laughed at parts, nearly cried at others.

Nesbit's Funniest and Most Accessible Book
By Pop Bop
So, here it is - a Kindle freebie with loads of positive reviews, but it's from 1899 and you suspect the positive reviews may just be filtered through the gauzy haze of happy childhood reading memories. Is it worth a try? I suggest the answer is "Yes".

Edith Nesbit was not a Victorian novelist with either a tendency toward vapors or an intimidating moralistic streak. She was most certainly a pip - opinionated, idiosyncratic, courageous, and undeterred by lack of precedent. She basically pioneered the writing of children's books that featured realistic children, honest humor, and respect for young readers. She avoided morals in favor of plain common sense, and she understood that siblings could love and support each other even while bickering. There is nothing stodgy about her books except for stodgy things and people she makes a bit of fun of.

Many of her more famous books are fantasies or have an element of "Boy's Own" adventure, but this book could readily be put forth as her funniest. There is broad humor, witty commentary, irony, and dry as dust understatement that readers of many different ages and abilities will pick up on to a greater or lesser degree. While you might expect it, the writing is not terribly formal or complex, just a bit more structured. It would be easy enough even for a younger reader to get into the flow of Nesbit's elegant and engaging, but light and very reader-friendly writing style.

The Bastable kids are good, funny, bright kids. They are also brave and honorable. They have the kid equivalent of style. Even if they do mess up a bit it's usually because they tried to do too much rather than too little. Their conversations, both among themselves and with adults, are as fresh and vivid as though they took place yesterday and any of the Bastables could slip right now into a middle grade school daze novel and fit right in - that's how good Nesbit was.

So, well worth a toss and likely to be a winner.

Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to the publisher of this book.

About the Author
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in ‘pulp’ magazines before he died in poverty, he is now widely seen as one of the most significant 20th century authors in his genre. In high school Lovecraft found his contemporaries were accepting and he formed friendships. He also involved neighborhood children in elaborate make-believe projects, only regretfully ceasing the activity at 17 years old. Despite leaving school in 1908 without graduating - he found mathematics particularly difficult - Lovecraft’s knowledge of subjects that interested him was formidable. Throughout his life, selling stories and paid literary work for others did not provide enough to cover Lovecraft’s basic expenses. Living frugally, he subsisted on an inheritance that had almost gone in his last years, by which time he sometimes went without food to afford the cost of mailing letters.18 He was forced to move to smaller and meaner lodgings with his surviving aunt. He was also deeply affected by the suicide of his correspondent Robert E. Howard. In 1936, Lovecraft was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine,19 and as a result he suffered from malnutrition. He lived in constant pain until his death on March 15, 1937, in Providence. In accordance with his lifelong scientific curiosity, he kept a diary of his illness until close to the moment of his death. Lovecraft was listed along with his parents on the Phillips family monument. That was not enough for his fans, who in 1977 raised the money to buy him a headstone of his own inSwan Point Cemetery, on which they had inscribed Lovecraft’s name, the dates of his birth and death, and the phrase “I AM PROVIDENCE,” a line from one of his personal letters.

An excellent horror story
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Jervas Dudley was always a strange lad, a dreamer and a visionary. But, when he takes to sleeping in an old abandoned tomb, his dreams begin to take on a weird and frightening tone.

This is another great Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) book. It was originally published in 1922 in The Vagrant, and is an excellent horror story. So, if you like a good horror story, then you should get this one!

Everybody should know who H.P. Lovecraft is. I might not be thought of as Twain, or Shakespeare, but is certainly a science fiction staple.

Everyone On The Planet Needs To Read This Book
By Ejeks
Internet security is becoming one of the world’s most crucial hot sports when it comes to the internet. These days now everyone is online consciously or unconsciously so it’s easy to get caught up in the net of really bad people if you are not careful enough.

Just think about it, hacking and being hacked is on the news almost every day. If big corporations like SONY can be hacked, then you should realise just how important it is to protect yourself. But with James book, you can be rest assured that you are covered.

The book is very detailed and covers just about all that you need to know about keeping yourself safe when on the internet but also you will get a crash cause in computer protection. You get to know how to deal with VPNs and Pop-Ups; those can be really annoying.

Gives a deeper understanding of T-SQL features, with an emphasis throughout on performance.
By Ian Stirk
Hi,

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

This book from SolidQ aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL functionality. With an emphasis throughout on performance, how does it fare?

This book is both an update to, and a combination of, three previous books (T-SQL Querying – published 2009, T-SQL Programming -2009, and T-SQL Using Window Functions - 2012). New material from SQL Server 2012 and 2014 is discussed, including: Window Functions, the new cardinality estimator, sequences, columnstore technology, and in-memory OLTP. It comes from SolidQ and is written by some of the most respected names in the world of SQ Server.

Aimed primarily at developers and administrators, it offers a detailed view of internal architecture and a comprehensive programming reference. It aims to provide a practical approach together with techniques to optimize code. This is not a book for the beginner, it assumes at least one year's solid experience of T-SQL programming, and tuning basics.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Logical query processing

This chapter opens with an observation about experts - they build their knowledge upon a solid understanding of the basics. So this chapter starts with a look at the basics, logical query processing i.e. the logical order the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Each step is discussed in detail, these steps are:

1. FROM phase (include virtual table for each of the possible types of join)
2. WHERE phase (can’t use column aliases here – SELECT not yet applied)
3. GROUP BY phase (nulls considered equal here)
4. HAVING phase (filter applied to GROUP BY)
5. SELECT phase (2 steps: evaluate expressions then apply distinct clause)
6. ORDER BY phase
7. Apply the TOP or OFFSET-FETCH filter

The chapter continues with a look at further aspects of logical query processing, including table operators (join, apply, pivot, unpivot), windows functions (work with set of data per underlying row, use OVER clause) and UNION, EXCEPT, and INTERSECT operators.

This chapter provides instructive detail on the logical order that the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Helpful examples are provided to illustrate the points made. The discussions are easy to read. Plenty of useful tips are provided along the way (e.g. a CASE expression with no ELSE clause has an implicit ELSE NULL). Useful links to other chapters in this book and to various websites are provided. All these points apply to the whole book.
.
.
.
Conclusion

This book aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL features, with an emphasis throughout on performance. It is an amalgamation and update of 3 previous well-respected books.

All the topics are explained in a very readable and interesting manner. Throughout, there are helpful explanations, screenshots, practical code examples, inter-chapter references, and links to websites for further information. Where possible, references to performance improvements are included. Additionally, there are plenty of useful incidental side tips. Although primarily intended for SQL Server 2014 and 2012, much of the content is applicable to earlier (and probably later) versions too.

This book is not for the beginner. It teaches advanced SQL concepts and techniques, it should take your understanding of T-SQL from around 4 to around 8. It is an ideal follow-on from Ben-Gan’s “Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals”, which I recently reviewed.

The book does have omissions, and this is to be expected, otherwise it would run into several volumes. I would have liked to have seen a section on websites/newsletters that would improve your T-SQL understanding. I would have also liked to have seen some discussion of Big Data and its implications. Then there’s the perennial problem of book updates, it would be helpful to know what is new compared to previous editions of the book (this should be easier in the digital world). That said, in the broader context, these are really minor points.

If you want a more advanced understanding of T-SQL features, together with the latest performance techniques, written by some of the best SQL educators, I can highly recommend this excellent book.

The Must Have T-SQL querying book
By Flav
This book is truly a reference book to have. If you're pretty serious about taking your T-SQL to advanced and expert level, this is the ultimate reference book to have. The very first chapter will be a great eye-opening if you never learned about T-SQL logical processing. This first chapter explains why you were getting certain error messages you can't even debug and with which google search can't help either. The next chapter and the subsequent 3 chapters really give you the power and the ability to think like a "pro" and SQL codes just pour from your mind to your fingers and to the keyboard. I just read the first five chapters and I was able to solve so many business problems that I couldn't solve before and about which I couldn't find help online with Google.
This book is packed with excellent expert knowledge to help you grow your skills and think and design solutions for solving business problems.

Superb reference for the SQL Server developer
By Gerald W. Britton
This book is easily among the finest on the subject. It covers everything a SQL Server developer needs to know to get the job done and get it done right the first time. It even delves into the SQLCLR which is given short shrift in many other volumes. The book finishes off with advanced topics on graph construction and navigation, perhaps not everyday issues for most developers but essential information when you need it.

The Undersea Network (Sign, Storage, Transmission), by Nicole Starosielski

In our "wireless" world it is easy to take the importance of the undersea cable systems for granted, but the stakes of their successful operation are huge, as they are responsible for carrying almost all transoceanic Internet traffic. In The Undersea Network Nicole Starosielski follows these cables from the ocean depths to their landing zones on the sandy beaches of the South Pacific, bringing them to the surface of media scholarship and making visible the materiality of the wired network. In doing so, she charts the cable network's cultural, historical, geographic and environmental dimensions. Starosielski argues that the environments the cables occupy are historical and political realms, where the network and the connections it enables are made possible by the deliberate negotiation and manipulation of technology, culture, politics and geography. Accompanying the book is an interactive digital mapping project, where readers can trace cable routes, view photographs and archival materials, and read stories about the island cable hubs.

Review
"The Undersea Network is a thrilling work of cultural analysis. Part critical travel writing, part investigative ethnography, part history of technology, Nicole Starosielski's oceanic odyssey takes her readers to out-of-the-way sites like the Honotua cable station on Tahiti, the mega-networked beaches on Guam, and to AT&T's offices on Keawa'ula Beach in O'ahu. She reminds us that the undersea telecommunications infrastructure is haunted by histories of maritime colonial connection, Cold War submarine conflict, and the fluctuating fortunes of finance. This superb book will transmute our common sense about the media ecologies in which we live." (Stefan Helmreich, author of Alien Ocean: Anthropological Voyages in Microbial Seas)

"Nicole Starosielski's The Undersea Network is as expansive as its subject, revealing the networks that make global communication possible as vital worlds unto themselves. In most stories of new media, infrastructure fades into the background.  But Starosielski flips the script, making infrastructure the star, vividly describing the places, the people, the institutions, and the politics that constantly work to make global communication possible. In the process, The Undersea Network offers new insights into globalization and digitization. It also teaches us how to study large and largely invisible technical and cultural institutions. Coupled with its groundbreaking digital companion (www.surfacing.in), The Undersea Network will transform our understanding of the networks that make modern media possible."
(Jonathan Sterne, author of MP3: The Meaning of a Format and The Audible Past: Cultural Origins of Sound Reproduction)

“Starosielski offers a crucial intervention into theoretical conceptualizations of communications infrastructure. . . . This rich text also has profound implications for how citizens in an always-networked society and economy understand our lived realities. The Undersea Network makes us reconsider the ‘wirelessness’ of our world by admonishing us consider it in terms of its peculiar and ongoing connectedness to geographies, cultures, and politics.” (Sara Rodrigues PopMatters)

“[A] fascinating book that is part history, part travelogue and part socio-economic memoir. . . . Starosielski’s account makes for fascinating reading, drawing together the varied threads of history, technical complexity, economic power and political will that have shaped the world’s cable networks. Despite the scale of the infrastructure under discussion, the narrative remains intensely personal, and one to be enjoyed." (John Gilbey Times Higher Education)

“The Undersea Network is a fascinating interdisciplinary look at the infrastructure that lets us communicate instantly across oceans…. [T]his book is a good read for anyone broadly interested in geography or communications.” (Eva Amsen Hakai Magazine)

“A fascinating cultural assessment of global undersea cable networks that carry most of the world's trans-ocean Internet traffic. … Great stuff!” (Christopher Sterling Communications Booknotes Quarterly)

"Overall, the book brilliantly brings together the global metanarrative of mass communication with the local, material, and relatively immobile specificities of this undersea network.... Starosielski is extremely successful in rewiring our wireless imaginaries of a networked world. The depth and breadth of the fieldwork conducted is noteworthy as is the production of the book itself, which contains a plethora of images, graphics, and maps." (Rachael Squire Transfers 2016-04-01)

"The multistranded analysis developed in the book provides a rewarding account that blends cultural history with investigative ethnography and along the way takes us to remote sites in Hawaii, Tahiti and Guam. Most importantly, Starosielski brings the infrastructure of undersea cable systems back into visibility, showing us in vivid ways what makes global communications possible." (European Journal of Communication 2016-04-01)

"The Undersea Network succeeds in introducing an environmental consciousness into one’s imagination of digital networks and the ecological, political, financial, place-based contingencies that support, interfere with and maintain our global telecommunications system. It makes cables salient. ... The Undersea Network is required reading for students of media and network archaeology, communication educators, political and environmental scientists, the history of technology discipline, and readers within the cable industries and government." (Emily Goodmann International Journal of Media & Cultural Politics 2015-06-01)

"If you have ever wondered why infrastructure has suddenly become a buzzword in cultural anthropology and science and technology studies, then follow the signal. That is precisely what The Undersea Network does, brilliantly redeeming the promise of multi-sited fieldwork methods to highlight the connections and disconnection–historical and present-day–among far-flung people and places.... For anyone with an interest in Pacific studies, this book has plenty to ponder." (Robert J. Foster Journal of Pacific History 2016-02-08)

Rather interesting account of underwater cable systems. Considering the author's non-technical background the book I was pleasantly surprised by how accurate she was in describing the technical aspects of the cabled systems. The political and sociological aspects of the cabled systems were all new to me and very interesting to someone who has spent the last 25 years working on the technical side of underwater cabled systems. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the almost unknown communications backbone that makes the Internet possible.

Terrific read!

Reading the Undersea Network is like attending your favorite teacher's class. This fascinating book shines a light on an "obscure" subject by using a variety of paths, including additional online information that motivates one to seek out more information. If you have the slightest interest in how communication works, especially the internet, you'll enjoy this book.

Nicole Starosielski's book does an amazing job making these invisible infrastructures more visible and understandable
By Farman
Why does the everyday user of the internet know so little about how it works and the physical objects in the world that are required to make it possible? Nicole Starosielski's book does an amazing job making these invisible infrastructures more visible and understandable. Moreover, she explores how infrastructures (and their invisibilities) have very profound political and cultural implications. I teach this book to my undergraduates and they overwhelming say it is their favorite read. I'll teach it next semester to my graduate students alongside Andrew Blum's work, Lisa Parks' writing on infrastructure, and a trip to a data center! I can't recommend this book enough!
