About the Author
American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

A great book for anyone who has ever hit a baseball.

This book evokes vivid images of intercollegiate sports in the early 1900s. The characters are warm and well-developed. The setting is nostalgic and timeless. Readers will puzzle over "Frosh on the fifth" and chuckle over the potato toss. The reader can feel the despair when Ken finds out what he has done to the Captain of the college baseball team, and feels his chances of making the varsity squad slip away in an instant. No one can keep from laughing out loud when the perfume is spread or the sweater put on. The combination of setting, characters and good old-fashoned baseball makes for very pleasant reading.
Personally, I recommend this book be read every Spring in anticipation of the upcoming baseball season, such as I have done for the last twenty-three years. It is a wonderful way to get in the mood for great battles on the ball diamond, as well as recapture the joys of youth. Reading this book could become as much a pastime as baseball itself.
Young adult readers will find this book interesting and fun. Parents will appreciate the role model of young Peg Ward, whose standards of conduct are the highest, even when faced with peer pressures, not unlike those of today.

If you like baseball, you will love this story...

I had a hard time putting this book down. Zane Grey has the feel for what it is really like to be a college baseball player, along with all of its struggles and victories. This is a great story with a great ending. You too will enjoy this story about Ken Ward and all of his fellow teammates. In the end, you will be thoroughy satisfied. Great book!

stayed with me

I am only writing this review because it is the first book I ever read. At the age of 5 or 6 or 7 it was the beginning to what would become a lifetime of walking around with a paperback in the back pocket of my jeans. I remember quite a bit of it vividly, even now, 40 years later, especially Ken Ward trying not to throw that final low inside pitch to the slugger on a 3 and 2 count. I have never re-read it, but it stays with me still.

Does what it says in the title

Good book for just starting out using R. It doesn't go super in depth, so you'll want to pick up another book if you want to create many of the different graphs that R is exceptionally good at generating. But for an inexpensive book when you are an an absolute beginner? Yes, it works well for that.

About the Author
Mary White was born c. 1637 in Somersetshire, England. The family left England sometime before 1650, settled at Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and moved in 1653 to Lancaster, on the Massachusetts frontier. There, she married Reverend Joseph Rowlandson, the son of Thomas Rowlandson of Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1656. Four children were born to the couple between 1658 and 1669, with their first daughter dying young. At sunrise on February 10, 1675, during King Philip's War, Lancaster came under attack by Narragansett, Wampanoag and Nashaway/Nipmuc Indians. Rowlandson and her three children, Joseph, Mary, and Sarah, were among the hostages taken. For more than 11 weeks and five days, she and her children were forced to accompany the Indians as they fled through the wilderness to elude the colonial militia. Years later, she recounted the severe conditions during her captivity for all parties. On May 2, 1676, Rowlandson was ransomed for £20 raised by the women of Boston in a public subscription, and paid by John Hoar of Concord at Redemption Rock in Princeton, Massachusetts.

True history written by the person who was there!!!

I've recently started reading a lot of history. For the most part, I only read books like this one that are taken from diaries. Just like the review written by "plum nuts", most of what we get is revisionist history. None of what he wrote has to do with real truth. You can't ask Mary Rowlandson, but you don't need to, just read her diary!
I have the original 1930 copy of this edition still being sold.
The book is her exact diary starting from the original bloody attack by the Indians in which most of the people were killed and 24 others were kidnapped and ending when she regained freedom. There are also some notes along the way at the bottom of pages which are there to fill in what her family was doing to regain her freedom, which Mary did not know about.
In the 1930 Preface, it states that this is one of America's most highly treasured books & that in 1930 it had been republished more than any but the most famous books. I know it is one of my most treasured!!! ...

The first American Best-seller, writen by a woman

I read this good book, here in Brazil. I read it for free reading, on an internet site. This book was writen in XVII century and was the first American best-seller ever writen by a woman.
Mary White Rowlandson (about 1637 - January 1711) was a colonial English woman, married with a Puritan minister, who was captured by Native Americans during the King Philip's War. After be released, Mary White Rowlandson wrote this book about her experience.
In this book, the author wrote things, such as this:"Now away we must go with those barbarous creatures, with our bodies wounded and bleeding and our hearts no less than our bodies."
And beyond doubt, Mrs. White had faith in God. In fact, in almost all pages of this book, you can see words such as bible, God, Lord, etc.
Why I, a Brazilian, decided to read this book?
Because I wanted to know the kind of persons that began, the strongest economic and military power of all history. And this book, even talking about a time centuries away, remains a good book to read.

Deserves to be a best-seller even today

Mary Rowlandson was the first American bestselling author. Her book was a memoir of her captivity among the New England Native Americans during King Philip's War. While it is entitled The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, part of that goodness is God's use of the Natives to punish the Puritans for religious backsliding. She says that by 1675, just a generation after the Mayflower, the Puritans were "perverse and evil...in the sight of the Lord". God "feeds and nourishes" the Native Americans to "be a scourge to the whole land".

Not your idea of Christianity?

Well, you should read this short book to see how the colonists in New England understood the world they lived in.

Mary went through hell and lived to write about it.

Enraged at the expansion of the Puritans, large numbers of Native Americans rose up in what the English called King Philip's War. They raided Mary's town and took her and her three children captive. Mary's youngest daughter was shot through the bowels and died a slow and agonized death. Mary found comfort in sleeping next to the corpse of her beloved child, but then had to give her body up to the forest.

Everything, and I mean everything, that happens to Mary is interpreted by her through the verses of scripture. She sees God's hand in her suffering and in her redemption.

The book is worth reading in itself, but it also has significant wider importance.

Mary Rowlandson helped create a literary genre, the captivity narrative, that was one of the commonest early American literary forms. These were "true" stories of, typically, women who were captured during Indian raids and who struggled to maintain a European Christian life in the midst of "savages". This for would later be immortalized in The Last of the Mohicans and in movies like The Searchers.

The book also helped crystallize the image of the Native American as untrustworthy and in league with Satan. Rowlandson tells readers that even Christianized Indians who assisted the colonists were secretly madmen and killers.

American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

The Rustlers of Pecos County is a suspense filled old time shoot-em up western. I found the main characters to be beliveable and connected to another time when men were men and ethics were uncompromisable.

Texas Rangers Ride!

Written earlier in his career, and in first person, this story about the Texas Rangers is typical "western" material. Having said that, I by no means mean this is inferior stuff, but you can see, if you are a devotee of Zane Grey that this book was a model for many of the more famous works that came later, making him famous. Many of his books are interconnected with scenes and prologues that are in other stories--provided you have read them all, and have a good memory. The one thing Zane Grey did not do well, in my opinion, is tell a fiction story well in 1st person. His fishing books, and camp and trail books are superbly told this way, but his fiction lacks something when he uses this literary device. This is still a good enough book to buy and read, so if you don't have it, get it, and enjoy.

I am a very senior citizen, so it's been many, many years since I read any of Zane Grey's books. When I saw this listed at Amazon for my Kindle, my mind reversed, and I remembered I loved those books when I was a youngster. Now I am happy I did. The book is extremely well written, along the line of McMurtry. The descriptiveness of people, scenes and actions was worth the few hours I spent reading it. I'll go on soon reading some more Zane Gray novels and really enjoy them.

Great book for odoo beginners

Great book for usa business owners that want a strong erp system without a huge cost.
Openerp, now know as odoo, is a powerful pos and accounting system with more flexibility than quickbooks. Odoo provives infinite possibilities to configure your business model, but with infinite posibilities comes infinite responsibility.

This book is meant to be a guide for usa based business owners to get up and running quickly, but thoroughly without overloading the reader with info. Additional research and trianing (self-paced or guided) will still be necessary. However, if your looking for a clean way to start this book is it. Take it from me, Ive setup odoo and walked away from ot seceral times due to its complexity, but after follwing this book i was able to get a working implementation up and running. Now, i have moved in to some more advanced online classes, but i still reference this book.

Now for the negatives:
1) The book is only relevant up to V8, as V9 will make some major changes in terms of usa based accounting. I call this a negative as i font believe there will be an updated version for 9, but if there was... Id buy it.
2) Several sections are are bit vague, especially for first times. Read, reread and then read between the lines. I wish the writer had expanded on some of the vague topics by takng a step-by-step approach, ratger than stating what needed to be done but leaving it up to the reader to figure out how.
3)odoo accounting methodology could be better explained. This is related to #2, but i want to make everyone aware that this book will tell you how to set up a sound basic accounting sys in odoo. It will not explain theory and odoo specific best practices. Having an accountant that is willing to work with odoo and you until you have every account strategy locked in is going to be important.

Last important note. If you want to make the instructions in this book work, then you have to install odoo natively and host it yourself. Or, you can hire someone to do it for you.

If you prefer to use odoo online for simplicity and support, then i recommend that wait until v9 releases amd that you prepare/budget atleast 300-500 per month in service fees for the first year.

Great Guide for US Odoo Users & Evaluators

I picked up this book because we are evaluating Odoo for inventory reasons, but we need a fully integrated software solution for our companies. I was getting extremely frustrated with the software because I had no basic start point nor obvious path forward. The accounting set up is the backbone of the program, and I was lost. After reading this manual, I have a better grip on the accounting framework and (hopefully) some helpful modules to install that will make Odoo more inline with my US financial and reporting requirements. Some of my (and my accountant's) immediate questions were answered within the first few sections of this book. Definitely a great resource for US Odoo users!

Entertaining

Having a Kindle helps one to discover books which otherwise would certainly have been missed. This is one of them.

It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming.

Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down.

It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

A philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew.
Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally.
The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult.
Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage.
I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

You will not be disappointed.

Great book! I had never read Jack London before but after visiting his burnt down estate in Northern California I became interested in his writing. This book is excellent, entertaining and fast paced. The kindle edition seems not to be missing any pages. Great Free Download.

Good read

The ebook gives a lot of good info. The only issue I had was that it's going to cost a lot more than he mentioned to get started. I think the best way to take the screens off would be to use more advanced machinery. Sure it's not absolutely necessary but IMO it would make the job easier and more productive. But its still a good read on getting started.

This book is very short to the point, for the price point I would say it's a great investment. The last few pages were the best but the rest of the information is all common sense. Looking forward to following up with his blog. Pictures and graphs are very helpful too.

About the Author
In addition to his Utopian satire Erewhon, Samuel Butler (1835–1902) remains best known for his semi-autobiographical novel, The Way of All Flesh. His other works comprise studies of Italian art, literary history and criticism, and prose translations of the Illiad and Odyssey that remain in use to this day.

Not as good as 'The Iliad...' (ok, that's a bit unfair.)

I must say, when I picked up 'Erewhon' at the public library two and a half months ago, I thought 'hmm, I vaguely recall this title' and 'Well, I laughed out loud at some parts of Butler's translation of 'The Iliad.' Should be a great read!'

To be fair, Butler's own 1901 preface to the combined edition apologizes for his youthful errors. I don't know what age he was when he translated Homer, but he must have been much older, and much more confident. His prose creaks with the layers of dried horse-glue that he's applied in polishing his extensive sentences. He is trying to satirize 19th Cent. English churchmen, Oxbridge dons and so forth, which is interesting academically, but... rather dry. Dry, dry, dry!

I did jot down one quote, which deals with the tendency of people to more jealously guard their purses than their ideas (or something like that) which made me smile. But that's one in 300 pages.

This work smells of youth. It's overthought and under-felt. Not one of the characters (including the narrator) inspires even a moment's empathy. And I'm a guy who cried at the 'Lavender blue, dilly-dilly' passage in 'London' a few years back. It doesn't take much to touch my outwardly stern, inwardly caramel-coated Norwegian-American psyche!

I agree with the other reviewer who said other 'dystopian' works have been done better. I might add, Orwell gets more laughs.

Does he get away with Arowhena? Yes, because he tells us several times through the work that he does. (Yawn.) How does he escape Erewhon? Who cares? I'll never find out, I stopped after 280 pages.

Back to the joys of Homer for me.

I suppose I'm an idiot

I've tried several times to read and enjoy this piece of fantasy freshman English types have been forced to drudge through for the last century. I've never succeeded. I tried it as a young man, forced to write papers on it and hated it. I've tried it as a horrid old codger, discovering tome by tome that books I once found awful have now grown merit and become a source of joy. Not so with this one.
Likely as not Erewhon was imaginative when it was written. Today it's been superceded by thousands of better reads with the same theme. There's nothing here that won't be found more interestingly expressed on any library or bookstore shelf in America.

Anyone willing to question tradition without any biases should read these books with an open-mind. I am not going to tell you about the books because you should read them yourself. They may offend many christians but thats what the truth does to some people I guess.

The book was first published on March 7, 1905 by Georges Newnes, Ltd and in a Colonial edition by Longmans. 30,000 copies were made of the initial print run. The US edition by McClure, Phillips & Co. added another 28,000 to the run.

This was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Adventure of the Final Problem". Having published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901–1902 (although setting it before Holmes' death) Doyle came under intense pressure to revive his famous character.

In The Empty House, within hours of Dr. Watson bumping into an aged bookseller, he and Holmes are back together after a three year hiatus, tracking a master criminal to their own front door. An obvious motive and copious clues point a murderous finger at Holmes own client in The Norwood Builder. Excellent audio rendition

Much anticipated, as evidenced on a website "The Sherlock Holmes Society", I was not sure I would like this, having enjoyed the dramatizations by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce on restored radio productions. Well, David Tomlinson reads Arthur Conan Doyle's story in top form, as if we were hearing Dr. Watson himself tell the story. He does all the voices, and will soon become a favorite audio reader. I completely enjoyed these readings. Plus, since they are the unabridged works, we hear every nuance that ACD wrote into the story, with no embellishment. The stories do hold up after so many years.

Mystery, Mystery, Mystery, the Original Mysteries.

As an Englishman. resident in the United States, what do I miss most? The BBC. As a little boy I looked forward to all the broadcast plays every week. The BBC cast performed about 6 hours of radio plays every week. They still do, haven't you also noticed the number of TV plays broadcast by A and E? Most of them originate in the United Kingdom, Hornblower, ETC.. Now we can enjoy the performances by means of these Bantam Double Day releases. Very well done, by a very experienced cast, you can let your imagination run riot as you picture the various scenes in your mind. These are the classic stories by Sir Arther Conan Doyle. They have been around for 100 years or so, and time has not diminished their appeal. On this Audio Book you have 4 stories, each about 45 minutes long. If you haven't heard these before, then I don't wish to spoil the story line. If you know the stories then you will not be disappointed. Each story is presented in the time period of around the 1900's, you can almost smell the gas lighting, not to mention the foggy november weather, the horses, and so on. Order these from Amazon, and search for more of the BBC plays, they are great.

Elementary Choice, My Dear Watson

Conan Doyle had long tired of Sherlock Holmes and his adventures, finally killing him off with the idea of moving on to "higher minded" literary pursuits. But the reading public was outraged! They demanded more Holmes. The public stormed the offices of Strand Magazine demonstrating and picketing the offices while wearing black mourning armbands. Later came the circulating petitions and, finally, the cancellation of more than 20,000 Strand Magazine subscriptions. It was the final straw.

After much discussion with his publishers and finally weakening by the offers of outrageous sums of money ($45,000 for 13 stories by Collier's Magazine alone in 1903 dollars), Doyle finally relented and brought ol' Sherlock back from his watery grave after his mortal fall from Reichenbach Falls, along with his arch nemesis - Professor Moriarty. Hence, the title - The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

This book is the collection of adventures as serialized by Collier's Magazine in 1903. The illustrations for the "Return" were done by the famous American illustrator, Frederic Dorr Steele. The artistic approach is quite different from the Strand's Sidney Paget, who illustrated the original 24 Holmes adventures. This was an American interpretation. History tells us that Mr. Steele used the famous American stage actor of Sherlock Holmes, William Gillette, for his illustrations despite their never having actually met.

If you want to collect the adventures of Sherlock Holmes there are only two (out of print) editions to consider. The first is The Complete Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes printed by Bramhall House * New York 1976. It is a Facsimile of the original 24 stories from the Strand Magazine as illustrated by Sidney Paget. But it is the wonderful Victorian cover art that makes this edition without equal!

The Return of Sherlock Holmes is an excellent 1987 edition by The Mysterious Press * New York. Its American illustrations are more "modern" and different from Paget's work, and is the only other edition to consider if you are looking for the best and most complete collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. They are both easily found on the net and purchased used for $5.95 and $7.50 respectively through Amazon.com.

I have looked at dozens if not hundreds of editions about Sherlock Holmes over the years, but these two editions are without question the most desirable copies. I possess twenty-two Holmes books in my private library. These two are my most prized.

BTW. Sherlock Holmes has often been quoted saying "Elementary my dear Watson", where upon he promptly explains the crime's solution to a sometimes bewildered Dr. Watson. Fact is, Holmes never uttered that precise and worn phrase in any of the Doyle stories.
