About the Author
Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Dorchester, Dorset. He enrolled as a student in King s College, London, but never felt at ease there, seeing himself as socially inferior. This preoccupation with society, particularly the declining rural society, featured heavily in Hardy s novels, with many of his stories set in the fictional county of Wessex. Since his death in 1928, Hardy has been recognised as a significant poet, influencing The Movement poets in the 1950s and 1960s.

Notes on the Kindle formatting.

Obviously Jude the Obscure is a classic and everyone should read it some time.
However this version is not the best although not for the reason the previous reviewer described. I do not know if it has been updated since the time of that review but currently, there is no problem with the arrangement of the text on-screen.
Unfortunately, Jude the Obscure had many revisions during Thomas Hardy's life and it is unclear which of the editions this copy represents. Additionally Jude is full of obscure (get it?) literary and cultural references that would have been far more decipherable by an 1890s British reader, but that are--sadly--lost on me and most without annotation, of which this version has none.
Finally, like most free Kindle editions (and far too many of the full-priced ones), there are no chapter breaks programmed into the text, so it is not possible to flip through the text to find something you have already read. I also have the paperback Oxford World's Classics edition and I don't think I will be able to discard it as a result of getting this version. Still: free is free.

full of surprises

I love Thomas Hardy -- his novels have never failed to disappoint and Jude the Obscure is no exception. When I first started reading it, I was skeptical -- it seemed simple, predictable, but after the first few chapters, the story and characters unfold in all their complexity. Without giving too much away, I will just say that the main messages of this novel relate to relationships and marriage as well as religious doctrine, society, and conflicting emotions. By the end of the novel, I was not sure what Hardy's position on these issues actually was, due to his brilliant ambiguity. He is questioning conventions and rebellion against conventions from beginning to end. To sum up, I'd like to say that this is one of the best novels I've ever read.

The Pain of Broken Dreams

While the protagonists of Jude the Obscure face social censure over a life-style choice which is accepted and commonplace today, the novel still touches painfully on themes of relationships, marital discord, thwarted ambition, and destabilizing grief. Jude, Sue, Arabella, and Richard are carefully drawn characters, and Hardy's understanding of their psychology is as modern as tomorrow. The horrific tragedy which tears Jude and Sue apart is all too believable and still shocking to readers a century after the novel was written. What a pity that the reception of this novel in 1895 so discouraged Hardy from writing fiction that he never gave the world another opus. This is an engrossing novel which resonates beyond its Victorian origins.
