Damsel in distress
By Paul Roberge
I didn't care for this Louis Tracy novel. Like his other books, it's well written and paced, but not a detective story in the accepted sense. What is being investigated is a girl's mysterious past--of which she herself is unaware. Basically, it's the story of a fairy-tale damsel in distress. A working girl obviously of upper class birth is kept in isolation by her elderly "aunt" (shades of Rapunzel). Along comes Prince Charming, a New York playboy named Rex, to rescue her and discover her secret past.

No doubt, in the end, boy gets girl, but I stopped reading halfway through the melodrama (lest I come to a scene where the heroine is lashed to a railroad track). A shame because I liked other novels that Tracy wrote.

Tracy is a British writer (1863 - 1928) but this novel takes place in New York. My rating of 2 expresses my own reaction to the book. Tracy was a popular and prolific writer in his time, and other readers with sensibilities different from mine may well enjoy the novel more than I did.

Not Disappointed
By Nojoqui
After reading the previous review written about The Bartlett Mystery, I hesitated in having any desire to read this book. Having just finished it, I can say that I'm certainly glad I took a chance on it.
I've read a lot of stories by Louis Tracy, but this is the first I've read by him that takes place in New York.
Not being sure if Tracy ever traveled there, I was surprised by the geographical accuracy presented.
Would I call Rex, an important character in the book, a "playboy"? If anything, I'd say that his mother is the one who played the role of making ill use of a family inheritance. As the book continues, and the plot fully develops, I find it a pity that the previous review didn't give the book a chance. Things change rapidly after
an initial presentation of the main characters. Other people enter into the rapidly arising conflict that was much more than the rescuing of a "damsel in distress". Anything from a crooked politician to a desperate vagabond. However, my two favorite characters where the two police officers, Steingall and Clancy. You might call them the American versions of Winter and Furneaux. The latter two play a prominent part in a few other books by Tracy that take place in England. As for these duos, they are both as different as day is to night. Yet, they work together like bacon and eggs. One is a little fat, and the other is a little scrambled. That should be enough to satisfy any readers literary appetite.
Finally, one of many quotes I saved from the book that thoroughly entertained me. Tracy at his acme of humor and excitement.
"Voles urged on the car by foot and finger. After him pelted Petch, with set teeth and straining eyes. The
magnificent car, superb in its energies, swept through the night like a fiery dragon of song and fable,
but with a speed never attained by dragon yet, else there would be room on earth for nothing save dragons.
And the motor-cycle leaped and bounded close behind, stuttering its resolve to conquer the monster in front".
Just one of many reasons why I enjoy Louis Tracy's books. I'd say The Bartlett Mystery is one of his best.

Prissy, but Original
By Amazon Customer
*The Bartlett Mystery* is a police procedural inhabited mainly by characters out of F. Scott Fitzgerald, with a few out of O. Henry. They all belong to a rigid class system which works like this: The Upper Class has money. Their women wake up at noon, after having spent all night gossiping nastily about each other. The women of the Middle Class are secretaries or work in dress shops. The women of the Lower Class do "manual labor". They are coarse and vulgar, but it's not their fault.

Tracy's language is often prissy.

In spite of these faults, I liked the book. The plot and the characters are original, and I prefer prissiness to the graphic but stereotyped sex scenes of modern mysteries, which often give the impression of having been written by artificial intelligence software of 1960s vintage.

The professional programmer’s Deitel® guide to Apple’s new Swift programming language for the iOS® and OS X® platforms

¿

Written for programmers with a background in object-oriented programming in a C-based language like Objective-C, Java, C# or C++, this book applies the Deitel signature live-code approach with scores of complete, working, real-world programs to explore the new Swift language in depth. The code examples feature syntax shading, code highlighting, rich commenting, line-by-line code walkthroughs and live program outputs. The book features thousands of lines of proven Swift code, and tips that will help you build robust applications.

¿

Start with an introduction to Swift using an early classes and objects approach, then rapidly move on to more advanced topics. When you master the material, you’ll be ready to build industrial-strength object-oriented Swift applications.

About This Book

¿

The Swift™ programming language was arguably the most significant announcement at Apple’s 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference. Although apps can still be developed in Objective-C®, Apple says that Swift is its applications programming and systems programming language of the future.

¿

Swift is a contemporary language with simpler syntax than Objective-C. Because Swift is new, its designers were able to include popular programming language features from languages such as Objective-C, Java™, C#, Ruby, Python® and many others. These features include automatic reference counting (ARC), type inference, optionals, String interpolation, tuples, closures (lambdas), extensions, generics, operator overloading, functions with multiple return values, switch statement enhancements and more. We’ve been able to develop apps more quickly in Swift than with Objective-C and the code is shorter, clearer and runs faster on today’s multi-core architectures.

¿

Swift also eliminates the possibility of many errors common in other languages, making your code more robust and secure. Some of these error-prevention features include no implicit conversions, ARC, no pointers, required braces around every control statement’s body, assignment operators that do not return values, requiring initialization of all variables and constants before they’re used, array bounds checking, automatic checking for overflow of integer calculations, and more. You can combine Swift and Objective-C in the same app to enhance existing Objective-C apps without having to rewrite all the code. Your apps will easily be able to interact with the Cocoa®/Cocoa Touch® frameworks, which are largely written in Objective-C.

¿

You can also use the new Xcode playgrounds with Swift. A playground is an Xcode window in which you can enter Swift code that compiles and executes as you type it. This allows you to see and hear your code’s results as you write it, quickly find and fix errors, and conveniently experiment with features of Swift and the Cocoa/Cocoa Touch frameworks.

¿

Practical, Example-Rich Coverage of:

  • Classes, Objects, Methods, Properties
  • Initializers, Deinitializers, Bridging
  • Tuples, Array and Dictionary Collections
  • Structures, Enumerations, Closures, ARC
  • Inheritance, Polymorphism, Protocols
  • Type Methods, Type Properties
  • Generics; Strings and Characters
  • Operator Overloading, Operator Functions, Custom Operators, Subscripts
  • Access Control; Type Casting and Checking
  • Nested Types, Nested Methods
  • Optionals, Optional Chaining, Extensions
  • Xcode, Playgrounds, Intro to Cocoa Touch® with a Fully Coded iOS® 8 Tip Calculator App
  • Overflow Operators, Attributes, Patterns
  • More topics online

¿

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT XCODE AND SWIFT: With Xcode 6.3 and Swift 1.2, Apple introduced several changes in Swift that affect the book's source code. Please visit www.deitel.com/books/iOS8FP1 for updated source code. The changes do not affect Xcode 6.2 users. You can download Xcode 6.2 from developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action (you’ll have to log in with your Apple developer account to see the list of downloads).

Review

“Apple took everyone by surprise when they announced a new programming language for developing Mac and iOS applications. Taking lessons from Objective-C and many other languages, Apple built a new language from the ground up. There is a lot to learn–new syntax, new idioms and more. It all seems daunting, but the Deitels have written a book that thoroughly explores Swift and Xcode 6 and guides you through what you need to know, regardless of which language you came from.”

–Robert McGovern, Independent Developer

“An excellent introduction to Apple’s new programming language. Line-by-line code explanations. Practical real-world abstractions throughout the code. Full of links to great resources. Features are introduced by comparison to established programming concepts making Swift easy to learn for developers new to Apple’s platforms. A must-read.”

–René Cacheaux, iOS Architect, Mutual Mobile

“It’s surprising that a book of this quality, depth and breadth has appeared so soon after Swift was announced. The ideal accompaniment to Apple’s reference documentation. This developers’ book takes an in-depth look at Swift. Whether you’re moving to the Apple ecosystem from a C++, C# or Java background or you’re an Objective-C programmer looking to update your skills to this newest and most exciting of Apple’s languages, this book is for you. Complements the Deitels’ excellent book iOS 8 for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach with Swift and maintains their trademark high-quality approach, containing many interactive, nontrivial code examples with in-depth code walkthroughs and best practices. Uses the power of Swift with Cocoa’s Foundation classes. A must-have for any serious Apple developer.”

–Rik Watson, Technical Team Lead for HP Enterprise Services (Applications Services)

“Perfect for the Objective-C developer looking to quickly learn Apple’s newest language. You’ll learn how to incorporate new Swift features such as tuples, closures and generics into your existing Objective-C projects. You’ll appreciate Swift’s built-in error handling while working through real-world examples in Xcode playgrounds.”

–Scott Bossack, Lead iOS Developer, Thrillist Media Group

“The chapters are comprehensive, covering simple use cases to complex challenges Swift is distinctly suited for. The code examples often represent day-to-day programming challenges. A wonderful learning tool and a handy reference for experienced developers.”

–Ash Furrow, iOS Developer, Artsy

“With Swift-based IOS 8 and OS X development the Deitel magic continues. They guide you through Swift with increasingly complex projects. They also offer valuable software engineering tips, performance improvements and techniques for preventing common errors. Whether your programming background is Java, C#, C++ or Objective-C, you will benefit from this valuable book. There is no question that Swift is Apple’s programming language of the future. This book by Paul and Harvey Deitel will be your guide to that future.”

–Charles Brown, Independent Contractor affiliated with Apple and Adobe

“Fantastic, especially for those involved in iOS and OS X development. Complete examples help explain concepts clearly. Great combination of Swift topics and helpful real-world tips on working with Cocoa’s Foundation classes, software engineering, performance, and error prevention. Highly recommended.”

–Jack Watson-Hamblin, Programming Writer and Teacher, MotionInMotion

“The explanation of hash tables in the Dictionaries chapter is a plus; includes important tips, helping you avoid common roadblocks; every code sample is provided as a playground, letting you try out and modify the samples–cool! Great example on when to use an implicitly unwrapped failable initializer; liked how Chapter 8 kept building upon the Time class; validating property values via property observers is a nice practical tip. The Structs chapter includes great tips such as defining struct custom initializers in extensions so that you continue to get access to the autogenerated memberwise initializer, saving developers time. Great nested type example. Includes the all-important advice about when to use reference types vs. value types. Chapter 10 has a nice introduction to polymorphism; great real-world examples, including a practical illustration on how to use protocols. Perfect introduction to generics. Love the NSDecimalNumber arithmetic operator overload example in Chapter 12–it illustrates Swift’s expressiveness while working with Objective-C code; this treatment of operator overloading and associated topics is very complete and includes great tips.”

–René Cacheaux, iOS Architect, Mutual Mobile

“I loved how the Dictionary examples represent problems programmers actually face. The Classes chapter is very good; I love the breadth and helpful caveats. Chapter 9, Structures and Enumerations, is fantastic–gives readers a sense of how the different data types work and when each is appropriate; a thorough description of some of Swift’s most awesome features. The Inheritance, Polymorphism and Protocols chapter includes the only explanation of polymorphism I’ve ever read in a textbook that makes sense; great use of case studies to solidify new concepts. I liked the discussion of how the Swift standard library uses generics and that the reader has been using them throughout this book. I appreciated the operator overloading examples using both custom types and Swift/Foundation ones–a really great chapter covering a super-cool feature of Swift whilst urging the appropriate level of caution.”

–Ash Furrow, iOS Developer, Artsy

“A quick and enjoyable introduction to the Swift programming language. Covers Swift’s strong typing, integration with Objective-C, use of the number and string primitives as well as the array and dictionary collections. I liked the way that mutability and immutability were explained, and where optionals were returned from subscripted access; the playgrounds were easy to experiment in. It was good that you created the array [Payable]–showing that protocols are also types. Good generics examples, particularly the safer Stack.”

–Abizer Nasir, Freelance iOS and OS X Developer, Jungle Candy Software Ltd.

“The syntax shading really helps set the code apart. The introductory tour of Xcode was great. I liked the callouts for engineering tips and best programming practices. I thought the discussion about Hashing was particularly invaluable and informative. A good job of showing how to use structs and enums and their increased power compared to say Objective-C–I like that you returned to earlier examples and re-implemented them using structs to compare the different approaches. The Operator Overloading chapter felt like it was constantly teaching me something–it was thorough and all the tips felt appropriate.”

–Robert McGovern, Independent Developer

“I’m happy with the pace, especially if I consider the target audience to be an existing Objective-C programmer. The Functions, Methods, enums and Tuples chapter is excellent. Loved the Arrays chapter–the book is worth it just for the performance tips alone; I really like the creating and initializing arrays example; sorting an Array with the method sorted and closures is a good example; the variadic parameters example is lovely. The Classes chapter is full of sound software engineering principles applied in a very understandable way to the new idioms exposed by Swift. Great enum examples. The Inheritance, Polymorphism and Protocols chapter is excellent. An excellent introduction to generics. Chapter 12 is a great intro to the more complicated aspects of String manipulation whilst showing some great, real-world operator overloading examples.”

–Rik Watson, Technical Team Lead for HP Enterprise Services (Applications Services)

Swift Book truly written for Programmers coming from C++, Java, C#, or Objective-C
By Eric R. Dunstan
Having read all fourteen chapters in this book, I now feel competent in this new language that is very different from all other object-oriented compilable languages I know. I have worked extensively in Java, C#, C++, and Objective-C. Swift seems to be a distant relative to all those languages. In fact, Swift seems to be so distinct as to be in a language family of its own. So there is a greater learning curve to mastering this language coming from those languages than there is in going from one to another among those languages, such as from Java to C++. However, this book is titled correctly: "Swift for Programmers". It assumes you are already a programmer in one of those languages, and thus you do not start from programming 101. Instead, this book gets you up-to-speed fast, and is quick paced, giving just enough coverage to enable comprehension of a language feature before moving onward.

The concepts covered are clear and well written. The book as a whole is well written, and can easily be read from cover to cover. The last two chapters are a quick intro to iOS programming with Swift, but the rest of the book applies to development in the language itself, whether the target is OS X or iOS. The book is a quick read but comprehensive, and I highly recommend this book for programmers who want to get into this new technology coming from another technology, whether it is from iOS in Objective-C or from C++,Java, or C#.

Once you master this language, if you knew Objective-C, you will understand why Apple is moving over to this new technology for all their development. Swift is better, more powerful, and faster to develop in than Objective-C and you can directly access libraries written in Objective-C and C from your Swift code. However, there is no equivalent of Objective-C++ in Swift yet, but the technology is quite new, and we don't know how it will change in coming years. But the book makes clear that rapid changes are occurring in the language. So what you learn today may be different in the soon future. However, now is the time to come onboard with Swift, in its infancy, so you can ride the wave and have the advantage over those still working in Objective-C.

There are a lot of unusual features in Swift that require an in-depth explanation to understand, and this book provides that. For example, the book covers the automatic conversion of common types between Swift and Objective-C libraries that it uses. It mentions how NSString, NSDictionary, and NSArray are converted to Swift's value based struct equivalents transparently to the programmer. It also mentions the memory management of Swift. Swift does not have automatic garbage collection like Java or C#, but neither does it have raw pointers like C++, C, and Objective-C. Instead, it accomplishes memory management through ARC (Automatic Reference Counting), which is a feature started in Objective-C and perfected in Swift. Basically, the Swift compiler handles all the ARC code; all the programmer needs to do is prevent circular references, which is done by using weak references. ARC is used for reference types only. Everything else is passed by value on the stack, and these are called structs. Even numbers are value objects with methods and properties.

Swift is an object-oriented language without a common super object from which all classes descend. Swift classes do not need to have a super class. However, your Swift classes can descend from Objective-C classes and inherit and change their methods. This book covers these object-oriented features, including extensions, which is the Swift version of Objective-C categories, only much more powerful. With extensions and operator overloading, the book shows how you can add overloaded operators to existing Objective-C classes in Foundation and Cocoa and Cocoa-Touch without access to the source code of those classes! C++ and C# are not quite as capable in their operator overloading functionality.

This book also covers how they totally avoid the problems of Null Pointer Exceptions, which is a problem with most other compilable languages. This is accomplished through optionals. Note that there are in fact no such thing as Exceptions in Swift. Instead you have failable initializers, which return optionals containing nil if they fail.

These details just cover the tip of the iceberg in this new language. I strongly recommend buying this book while it is new. I bought it the day it was released, and I have never regretted it. It was a good read and serves as a good reference with good pointers to go back to. In addition, almost every section points to URLs that you find more detailed discussions on the internet for further understanding. In summary, this is a very good book.

I really didn’t like this book
By ZenToadBookWorm
I really didn’t like this book. Because of the title, I assumed that this book would get me up and coding in no time. Instead, most of the book is dedicated to code snippets and short examples introducing the language. If this book is really for programmers, why are you explaining with paragraphs and code examples how the “or” operator works. I already know how to program, and I already know all this stuff. It isn’t until Chapter 13 that the book starts explaining stuff that a programmer new to the language wouldn’t know. So I do not recommend this book. A few hours online looking at documentation would give you the same amount of knowledge.

Already somewhat out of date
By SW
Buy an expensive computer language book with a copyright the same year you bought it (2015) you would expect it to be completely relevant. A lot of the code will not compile with the latest Swift because of small syntax changes.

Just to list a few things wrong that prevent compiling:
1. "println()" used in almost every example needs to be changed to "print()"
2. "#" prefix for givng an external parameter name the same name as the internal has been removed from the language.
3. "Printable" protocol has been replaced "CustomStringConvertible" . This is the way to make the object print themselves.

The book is pretty good otherwise. If Deitel updates the book and Apple stop breaking compatibility with syntax changes it probably would be 4 or five star book. But you can start to see why the internet is replacing computer books with this example.

Daniel Deronda, by George Eliot

Men can do nothing without the make-believe of a beginning. Even science, the strict measurer, is obliged to start with a make-believe unit, and must fix on a point in the stars' unceasing journey when his sidereal clock shall pretend that time is at Nought. His less accurate grandmother Poetry has always been understood to start in the middle; but on reflection it appears that her proceeding is not very different from his; since Science, too, reckons backward as well as forward, divides his unit into billions, and with his clock-finger at Nought really sets off in medias res. No retrospect will take us to the true beginning; and whether our prologue be in heaven or on earth, it is but a fraction of that all-presupposing fact with which our story sets out.[...]

From Library Journal
Nadia May meets the strenuous demands of Eliot's narration with easy assurance. In this enduring Victorian classic written in 1876, two stories weave in and out of each other: The first is about Gwendolen, one of Eliot's finest creations, who grows from a self-centered young beauty to a thoughtful adult with an expanded vision of the world around her. The second is about Daniel Deronda, adopted son of an aristocratic Englishman who becomes fascinated with Jewish traditions when he meets an ailing Jewish philosopher named Mordecai and his sensitive sister, Mirah. Providentially, Daniel then discovers that he himself is Jewish. Eliot's (Middlemarch, Audio Reviews, LJ 3/15/95) tender portrait of Mordecai is considered by some critics to be one of the most sympathetic treatments of a Jewish character in Victorian literature. Characterizations are strong throughout, except when the author takes center stage and delivers one of her lengthy monologs. Once the compelling drama resumes, it makes incredible demands on the narrator. However, whether May is reading French or German or Italian quotations, or interpreting Mordecai's Zionist speeches, she deserves to share the final applause with George Eliot herself.?Jo Carr, Sarasota, FL

“Daniel Deronda is a startling and unexpected novel . . . it is a cosmic myth, a world history, and a morality play.” —A. S. Byatt

Dramatization

A BBC Radio full-cast dramatization of George Eliot's final controversial novel.  From the moment he sees her at the roulette table, the young and idealistic Daniel Deronda is drawn to Gwendolyn Harleth, as she is too him.  But Gwendolyn- outwardly alluring and vivacious, inwardly complex and unsettled- is forced by circumstance into an oppressive marriage with the harsh aristocratic Henleigh Grandcourt.
Daniel becomes torn between her and Mirah Lapidoth, a young Jewish woman he saves from suicide, and, uncertain of his parentage, becomes increasingly driven to discover who and what is.

Another monument to Eliot's brilliance
By A.J.
"Daniel Deronda," the culmination of George Eliot's distinguished career, is a tale of two cultures which explores the themes of concealed heritage, bigotry, and marriages of convenience in a manner never done before or since. Like its predecessor "Middlemarch," it is a long novel of perfectly structured complexity and impressive intellectual exposition, built upon a cast of characters so sharply and meticulously defined that the plot is propelled solely by the power of their presence. This is the novel that Henry James wanted to write, and even he could never match Eliot's passion and linguistic effortlessness.
The forward story in "Daniel Deronda" is that of Gwendolen Harleth, a coquettish, conceited, superficial girl -- in company she often affects a sophistication that is never quite convincing -- who could be called the heroine even though she lacks most heroic attributes. She is from an upper class family, but when misfortune strikes and she is faced with poverty, she consents to marry a man named Mallinger Grandcourt, heir to a large estate, rather than reduce herself to taking a job as a governess, and despite having received a warning from a mysterious lady about Grandcourt's having fathered illegitimate children.
The secondary story is that of Daniel Deronda, the title character, a young man who first sees Gwendolen in a casino in Leubronn at the beginning of the novel. Daniel, who happens to be the ward of Mallinger Grandcourt's uncle, Sir Hugo Mallinger, is inquisitive about his obscure parentage and unsure of his place in the world. One portentous day, he rescues a girl from drowning herself -- this is Mirah Lapidoth, a Jewish girl who has run away from her father in Prague and come to London to look for her long-lost mother and brother. Daniel decides to help her by playing detective, which eventually leads him to befriend a family of Jewish shopkeepers named Cohen, whom he supposes to be related to Mirah, and a deeply religious man named Mordecai.
Eliot intertwines this Judaic element with that of Gwendolen's unhappy marriage, as Daniel maintains a steady companionship with her while he spends time immersing himself in Jewish culture, learning about a past he never knew he had. The event by which Gwendolen's situation resolves itself is foreshadowed by a particularly eerie symbol: In her family's house, there is a painting she dreads, apparently conceived by a morbid ancestor, depicting a figure running away in fright from an upturned dead face. As a plot device it may seem unrealistically gothic, but Eliot's treatment of her material is too somber and mature ever to succumb to the absurd.
This novel, while not as consistently great as "Middlemarch," confirms my opinion that Eliot is the most accomplished, intelligent, and original of the Victorian novelists, boldly ahead of her time. She is undeniably one of the greatest psychological portraitists in literature; better than most other authors, she understands the way people think and why they do what they do, which is probably why her sense of tragedy feels authentic rather than merely sentimental. Whether "Daniel Deronda" is read to get a unique insight on Jewish life in London in the nineteenth century or just to bask in the opulence of Eliot's prose, the effort will be richly rewarded.

a historic masterpiece
By lazza
Daniel Deronda is a brave piece of literature. It attempts to chronicle the budding Zionist movement and anti-semitic attitudes of Victorian society, and combine it with a more traditional George Eliot soul-searching story of a young woman (a gentile who has a complex relationship with Daniel Deronda, the young Englishman who discovers he is a Jew). While many people have quibbled about various details of the story, with some justification, the overall impact is one of awe. It's amazing how an accomplished writer defies popular criticism and explores a subject matter which was, at the time, politically incorrect.
Strictly speaking, Daniel Deronda isn't quite the same level of immaculate fiction as Middlemarch. So I think George Eliot fans will be somewhat disappointed. But on the positive side, the book is much more accessible (ie, easier to read). And the subject matter makes it required reading for everyone interested in modern Judaism/Zionism. It's fascinating to compare how Jews were perceived during the mid-1800s relative to today (..in western Europe).
Finally, the Penguin Classic edition of Daniel Deronda has both great Notes and Introductory sections (which, oddly, is supposed to be read AFTER reading the book).

I think he is not like young men in general
By EA Solinas
"Daniel Deronda" was the last novel George Eliot wrote, and it's an appropriate finale to her career -- a lushly-written, heartfelt story about a young man searching for his past (and clues to his future), as well as a vibrant strong-willed young lady who discovers that life doesn't always go your way. Even better, Eliot deftly avoided the cliches and caricatures of the Jewish people, portraying them with love and respect.

Daniel Deronda is the ward (and rumored illegitimate son) of a nobleman, who is unsure of his past (particularly of his mother) catching a glimpse of pretty, reckless, arrogant Gwendolyn Harleth at a casino. Gwendolyn (who boasts that she gets everything she wants) is interested in Daniel, but when her family loses all their money, she marries a rich suitor, a relative of Daniel's -- knowing that his mistress and illegitimate children will be disinherited. But she soon finds that her new husband is a sadistic brute, and sees Daniel as her only help.

Meanwhile, Daniel rescues the despairing Mirah Lapidoth from a suicide attempt in the river, and he helps the young Jewish singer find a home and friends to care for her. As he helps her find her family, he becomes passionately attached to the Jewish population and their plight, embodied by a dying young visionary and a kindly shopkeeping family. Then he receives an important message -- one that will illuminate his roots, and give him a course for the future.

When Eliot published her final novel, it caused a massive stir -- not many novelists tackled the plight of the Jewish population, or how it compared to the gilded upper classes. In a way, "Daniel Deronda" is both a love triangle and an allegory -- Daniel must choose between the pretty, shallow English life (Gwendolyn) or a rich Jewish heritage (Mirah) with a background of tragedy.

The biggest problem with Eliot's writing is that it becomes a little too lush and dense at times, and the narrative moves a bit slowly (in the Victorian manner). But that flaw doesn't rob her writing of its power or beauty -- she describes every feeling, gesture and emotion in detail, as well as the sumptuous balls, exquisitely gilded mansions, and every shadowy tree or rich expanse of land ("a grassy court enclosed on three sides by a gothic cloister").

Yet the greatest power is in the stories that twine like ivy over the main plot -- a young Jewish girl's search for her family, a sadistic man's search for a wild lovely girl he can break, and especially of the composer Herr Klesmer and his sweet, atypical love story with Miss Arrowpoint. And the last quarter of the book is wrapped in Daniel's search for his own family, culminating in a quietly tense encounter with someone from his long-ago past.

Daniel almost seems like a character too good to be true -- unselfish, kind, universally kindly and very intelligent, though possessed of a vaguely searching quality. Gwendolyn is his complete opposite: she has been raised to be selfish, disdainful and immature, but as the book goes on she learns that selfishness doesn't pay -- marriage to the despicable Grandcourt changes her from a selfish little girl into a scarred but stronger woman.

The third leg of the triangle is Mirah, who is not given the loving attention that Gwendolyn is, but who is still a compelling figure -- her father tried to sell her, and now she wanders through England searching for her family. And the book is littered with many other striking characters: the sadistic Grandcourt and his creepy servant Lush, the crotchety but kindly Klesmer, the spirited artist Hans, the kindly Sir Hugo and the doomed, strong-willed Mordecai.

"Daniel Deronda" is a beautiful portrait of a young man's search for his past, and a young woman's struggle with the fruits of her own selfishness. What's more, George Eliot's last novel is a loving, powerful portrait of the Jewish people, in a time when they were caricatured at best.

Tour de force
By Adam Rackis
Nick Zakas's "High Performance JavaScript" has always been my favorite JS book for senior devs. I can honestly say this piece surpasses that. It's probably the most dense 177 pages I've ever seen. The table of contents accessible from Amazon will enumerate the topics discussed; for the purpose of this review let it suffice that each area is ripped apart to reveal details that virtually any senior developer will be unaware of, and likely be surprised by. The section on loose equality alone is something I anticipate referencing in the future. Very well done.

Why use coercion to write better Javascript code
By astericky
After reading the first two books in the You Don’t Know Javascript series I was not exactly enthused about this topic based on the title ‘Types and Grammar’. I thought to myself what could the author possibly be talking about with such a non-descript arguably downright boring title. I think the title should be called 'Why use coercion to write better Javascript code' or simply 'Coercion'.

After having read this book, I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the information I could use immediately. This book aims to teach you types in javascript and how they interact with each other. I think overall it succeeded in its goal.

The first few chapters introduces the different types of values in javascript. We also learn that variables have no types in an of themselves but that it’s the values that have types.

The author sprinkles in lessons about the idiosyncrasies of Javascript very early on in the book rather than waiting and throwing all of them at us at once in one single chapter later on in the book. This makes the Javascript idiosyncrasies easier to digest and reason about when they are brought up. It also gives the author a chance to explain why many of the behaviors of Javascript that are considered to be weird actually make sense upon further inspection. I think this is one of my favorite things about this book.

We learn about the different "operand selector operators" (otherwise known as "logical operators”) and how Javascript has given these operators additional functionality that many in the community use even while complaining about their use.

This leads me to the main discussion in this book and that’s the use of coercion to make our code more readable and easier to reason about. Coercion in many cases is unfairly maligned by the developer community and rather than learning how to use it to write better code we complain about it without having throughly considered the benefits of coercion.

All in all this book was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it to anyone as I think there are things in this book that can be put to use immediately in our code.

1UP to the series
By Idefixx
Awesome book!

Content is clear, easy to understand, but deep enough to really cover all the fundamentals. Recommended for anyone, who is familiar with JavaScript and wants to get a deeper understanding of what is going on beneath the hood.

This is especially important for front-enders, who never really touch many important aspects of JavaScript and writing efficient, well-thought code is a major problem for them.

Review

“This is a splendid edition. Its introduction is an authoritative and up to date guide to the novel and its context. A generous and judicious selection of contemporary reviews of East Lynne and the sensation novel further amplify the context, and provide an excellent resource for students.” ― Lyn Pykett, University of Wales-Aberystwyth

“In his introduction, Andrew Maunder suggests that East Lynne may be ‘one of the most famous unread works in the English language.’ This immensely readable and teachable edition should help to preserve its fame while increasing its readership. Maunder locates the novel in its various contexts―social, historical, and literary―focusing especially on the material conditions of the novel’s publication, and the various “woman questions” of the middle nineteenth century. The supplemental materials are thorough and well-chosen, and for the selections from T. A. Palmer’s theatrical adaptation alone, the Broadview edition would be my choice for teaching.” ― Elisabeth Rose Gruner, University of Richmond

From the Publisher
The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

From the Back Cover

Lady Isabel Carlyle, a beautiful and refined young woman, leaves her hard-working but neglectful lawyer-husband and her infant children to elope with an aristocratic suitor. After he deserts her, and she bears their illegitimate child, Lady Isabel disguises herself and takes the position of governess in the household of her husband and his new wife.

East Lynne is the archetypal sensation novel, filled with disaster, guilt and repentance. It also documents the growing protest against the rigid roles prescribed for Victorian women. Among the many appendices included are a selection of Victorian medical views on men, women, and sexuality.

Not exactly my cup of tea, but...
By Domestic Virtues
I picked up an old copy of this Victorian novel in a used bookstore. It's not the sort of book I usually like much - the oft-told story of a woman seduced by a villain into leaving her happy home, and the shame, remorse, and misery that follow her downfall - but I found it very readable, I would even say a page-turner. Plenty of pathos and moralizing, as there generally is in these things, but much better than I expected.

Eminently Enjoyable
By Clarissa's Blog
This 700-page novel published in 1861 is enormously enjoyable. East Lynne has everything to grab a reader’s attention and never let it go: a murder investigation, a love triangle, adultery, mystery, creepy but irresistible seducers and seductresses, and the kind of plot where something exciting happens on every single page. Of course, I can’t address every aspect of this great novel in a short review, so I will concentrate on the theme that interested me the most and that, I believe, is central to the novel: emotional stupidity.

Archibald Carlyle, the novel’s protagonist, is a good man. He is hard-working, sincere, loyal, honest, and kind. However, he possesses one tragic flaw that makes all of these admirable qualities completely useless. Mr. Carlyle has the emotional intelligence of a door knob. He is completely incapable of noticing that other human beings have feelings. His indifference to the emotional experiences of others rises to the level of sociopathy. As a result, Mr. Carlyle, who never willingly commits a bad or unkind act, ends up destroying people who are the closest to him. He loves his wife Isabel but it never crosses his mind to take her feelings seriously. Her husband’s utter emotional stupidity eventually drives Isabel to abandon her family. She is willing to do anything but continue living by the side of an emotionally dead man.

Whenever Mr. Carlyle is forced to confront the unexpected reality that human beings have feelings of their own and don’t move through life as smiling machines, he becomes very perplexed and dismisses this unwelcome realization. He walks through life leaving pain, suffering, and death in his wake. I think we have all met a few people who have the same flaw as Mr. Carlyle. Such folks might be very well-meaning and nice, yet their emotional stupidity makes them fatal. I don't fear a nasty evil-doer half as much as I do somebody who is emotionally stupid.

Very good as a typical Victorian novel
By lesley9
I read the free public domain version of this book.
Its strength is its storyline. For modern readers, you may feel its weakness is in the context of its Victorian era, with the way it characterizes the actions, looks, and language of the people in it.

Children who say "hark", women who are constantly turning as pale as their clothes, men who shiver in horror, etc.

If you can get beyond this, you will find an enjoyable book with a fairly complex number of main characters with an increasingly twisty plot that solves a murder and at the same time adds a tale of love gone upside down. Mistaken identities, facts, motivations rule the plots.

A man is shot inside his house. The apparent murderer says he didn't do it but the one he accuses seems innocent, mostly because he couldn't be placed at the scene. On another front, a man and woman marry and start a family in happy circumstances. Then the man appears to fall for another woman, putting the wife in deep despair. She goes off with another man, later to regret abandoning her husband and children. Thinking her dead, the husband remarries only to have the first wife reappear in disguise to be the governess to their children.

The book sucked me in for hours at a time wondering what was going to happen next. Its also stayed with me well after I finished it.

A Fascinating Bit of Americana
By Charles R. Garcia
Any buyer who read the description of this book would have known it was first published in 1809 and today is primarily a piece of history. That being said, if you are a home-brewer it is a fascinating bit of Americana, written at a time when home brewing was considered a necessity as well as a god given right. These were not "moonshine" or "hillbilly" stills for making rotgut corn whiskey. They were carefully made devices important for the economny of the times. The words are archaic to our minds, but it shows the literacy of language of that era. Those who could read had a high vocabulary for the time. (Sadly this is not particularly true today.)
Don't expect to learn any secrets of brewing here. Rather, sit yourself down, and imagine yourself as a farmer reading this from the light of a whale oil lamp.
What a found interesting was the amount of safety taken to insure against a fire (or for that matter and explosion).
If you have the time buy this book and read it. It's in my primitive skills library right now.

Historical infomation
By J. P. Marshall
This is an information book outlining distillation from a histroical standpoint and not really a how to book. It's got some good info, but not a lot of instruction.

Wish I'd looked closer - this is very old
By Ross Patty
I really wish I'd looked closer at the reviews, and not just the title and rating, before ordering. With a name like "The Practical Distiller" I thought I'd be getting something practical, which described the art of distilling as understood in the modern age. Didn't realize until it arrived that it's essentially interesting from a historical perspective (written in 1809) rather than being useful for modern applications. I feel a bit bad about the 3-star rating because it's not really the book's fault that something 200 years old isn't what I was looking for, but I'm kind of surprised it was available and in print in the first place.

As someone who does appreciate the history of alcohol, I may try to work my way through it at some point (though the old-fashioned writing is dense and difficult; on the plus side it's only a paragraph before the author is referring to his peers as blockheads), but I'd like some understanding of the modern technology first before I can properly appreciate the historical perspective.

If you're into this history, this may well be a 4-star book. If you're a homebrewer looking for your first guide to distilling, this is probably two stars at best.
