Andre Fauvel, caused great excitement this morning throughout the neighborhood of Rue de Provence. "The thieves, who were as skilful as they were bold, succeeded in making an entrance to the bank, in forcing the lock of a safe that has heretofore been considered impregnable, and in possessing themselves of the enormous sum of three hundred and fifty thousand francs in bank-notes. "The police, immediately informed of the robbery, displayed their accustomed zeal, and their efforts have been crowned with success. Already, it is said, P. B., a clerk in the bank, has been arrested, and there is every reason to hope that his accomplices will be speedily overtaken by the hand of justice." For four days this robbery was the town talk of Paris. Then public attention was absorbed by later and equally interesting events: an acrobat broke his leg at the circus; an actress made her debut at a small theatre: and the item of the 28th was soon forgotten. But for once the newspapers were—perhaps intentionally—wrong, or at least inaccurate in their information. The sum of three hundred and fifty thousand francs certainly had been stolen from M. Andre Fauvel's bank, but not in the manner described. A clerk had also been arrested on suspicion, but no decisive proof had been found against him. This robbery of unusual importance remained, if not inexplicable, at least unexplained. The following are the facts as they were related with scrupulous exactness at the preliminary examination.

Not up to the Gaboriau mark

The most important author of detective novels was the Frenchman Émile Gaboriau (1832-1873). Far too little known today, Gaboriau is remembered in France as the 'father of the roman policier' and indeed many believe he can lay claim to having invented the modern detective novel. Directly in the tradition of Vidocq, but further influenced by Poe and probably Eugene Sue (whose The Mysteries of Paris had been one of the sensations of 1843), Gaboriau created the police detective Monsieur Lecoq. He appeared in not one but five novels. In the first, L'Affaire Lerouge (1866) he takes rather a back seat to the consulting detective Father Tabaret, whose methods Lecoq adopts, but in the later novels he takes centre stage. In fact you can see the character evolve from book to book - Crime d'Orcival (1867), Le Dossier no.113 (1867), Les Escalves de Paris (1868) and possibly the best Monsieur Lecoq (1869). These books are less easy to find today.
Le Dossier No. 113 (1867) ("File Number 113") is the most disappointing of Gaboriau's books. It does not start out with a detailed look at a crime scene, followed by deductions. H. Douglas Thomson compared it scornfully to a Hollywood thriller. It is also slow moving. It does have a great title, and the inside look at a French bank in the opening chapters is moderately interesting. It does show some features in common with Gaboriau's other fiction: the look at young men's mistresses recalls L'Affaire Lerouge; the wily persistence of the young bank clerk in evading police investigation anticipates the murder suspect in Monsieur Lecoq; and the construction of the puzzle plot contains features that will be expanded in "Le Petit Vieux des Batignoles", which contains one of Gaboriau's most complex plots. But all in all, this is a poor book....

This wily French detective influenced Sherlock Holmes

Gaboriau's great detective, Monsieur Lecoq, appeared in several novels and influenced generations of detectives to come, including Holmes. File No.113 was first published in 1867. It gives us a wonderful picture of Lecoq at work.

We watch him assume various amusing disguises. He's such a master of imposture that not even his fellow policemen know his true face! We witness him orchestrating a network of police and amateur spies. We groan as he makes mistakes and marvel at how adeptly he recovers from his errors. We see him engage in scheming as devious and intricate as the duplicity of the criminals he's trying to ensnare.

The plot is launched with a clever bank robbery that implicates the head cashier, Prosper Bertomy. This attractive young man engages the interest of Lecoq, who suspects Prosper may be falsely accused. The fact that Prosper is unhappily in love also stirs Lecoq's sympathy. The wily detective is the champion of love in all its forms, as befits a Frenchman of good heart.

Human passions fuel events, and the events in the novel are sensational. Besides robbery there's murder, conspiracy, blackmail. The most respectable people engage in egregious lying. At times the elaborate scheming of the conspirators becomes a bit tedious, but I was so caught up in the story I didn't mind. Gaboriau is just trying to keep us in suspense. Nineteenth-century readers had the patience to wait for Lecoq to outwit the criminals.

Clues are examined, suspicious characters tailed and their backgrounds researched, as they might be in a modern thriller. But then there are the elaborate disguises and the Victorian morality to remind us we're in the nineteenth century.

So I loved this novel, as I have loved everything by Gaboriau. And I liked this edition from Distinction Press for its readable format and interesting editorial content. The first book in which Lecoq appears, though briefly, is The Widow Lerouge, which I also highly recommend.

Make this book your first tool in your search for a QA Testing job

Land a job. . .is an excellent, probably indispensable, tool for the fledgling tester. As Jason Bay mentions in the book, there are so many scam sites out there offering fabulous wages, glamor and fun in return for you spending money on what ends up being worthless advice. You are far better off spending a couple of dollars on this book, which will take you all the way through the process of becoming a QA Tester.

Bay systematically breaks down every step of the process. After finishing his book, you will have the tools to land a good QA job, and you will know what to expect out there. This book provides you with dozens of tips and strategies for landing that first job in the QA business.

I have been in the QA business over 20 years, and read and seen dozens of books and sites that do not come close to providing the valuable, useful, and truthful information you find in this compact but excellent guide. I hope Bay writes a follow up book something along the lines of "You've landed that QA job. Now become the best possible tester you can be." If he can provide the same kind of insight to mastering the job that he provides for landing it, it will be a hit. If you are looking for work as a tester, quit beating your head against the wall, and buy this book.

Decisions made by governments, companies, and individuals are already based on learnings from predictive analytics. Big data can help curb climate change, isolate epidemics, prevent crime, and allocate resources during natural disasters. On the personal level, we can use data to understand our own health, our friends and family, and even the people we may fall in love with one day. If there's a central lesson to take from Tucker, a deputy editor of The Futurist magazine, it's not that we should resist the data points being collected about our lives, but simply to be mindful of them. "We want our apps to know us, to present customized answers to our problems and questions, but we don't care how they arrive at those solutions until there's a problem." Worth reading about how your life will be affected

The Naked Future by Patrick Tucker makes the argument that in the future we will be much better at predicting events and making decisions about such things as how to teach, romantic relationships and who is a criminal and where the next crime will occur. At the same time there will be a loss of privacy as more and more information about us goes online and into data banks. Tucker makes his case quite convincingly, citing a number of companies and experts working in this area. For example, in the chapter on education he cites the work of Stanford professor Andrew Ng and Coursera, an online site that offers world class courses taught by leading university professors, now accessible to anyone. There is also the idea of the flipped classroom in which teachers put information online for students to learn in lieu of giving lectures in class and instead use the class time for discussion and problem solving, in effect flipping the standard education format of class lectures and homework. How crime fighting will change is another topic that should be of interest to anyone

The most interesting subject to me was the chapter on online dating. Tucker says that there are three factors that make for successful long-term relationships: common interests, how people collaborate and interact with each other, and how they react to stressful events. The algorithms currently in use by such popular sites such as match.com can match people reasonably well on the first point, but not on the last two. But new technology is making progress on the other two. One effort, which eventually failed is a device by the name of “Lovegety.” This product is worn by men and women and sends signals when an appropriate person is nearby. The problems with such products, says Tucker, is that they are mostly bought by men who are more willing than women to make their personal information public and men tend to have a different interest from women in meeting (I will leave it up to you to figure out what that interest is!) Nevertheless in the future we will be able to predict in a better way who might be a good match. Already more people are meeting online than in bars and this trend will continue.

In sum, The Naked Future, is here and getting more “naked” by the day. Surveillance devices, drones and other means of gathering data will become more and more prevalent. We all need to realize this reality and learn how to live with it.

The next wave of participatory democracy

Our data isn't what we decide to share through social media – it is the observation of our behavior by the technology we use. Social media, apps, the “Internet of Everything” and evermore accurate and high-powered predictive analysis are working to create individual preference and behavioral models to help us shape our next experience or purchase.

Mr. Tucker’s timely examples and scenarios reveal why we need to discard the fallacy of privacy and embrace the accountability we have in sharing our data and allowing others to track our behaviors. Patrick paints a compelling case why we need to participate in how our data is used.

About the Author

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, becoming a bestseller), and after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime. When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick, which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. He was the first writer to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.

Six tales (including perhaps the best story ever written in English) showing how "truth comes in darkness"

The six stories collected in "The Piazza Tales" range vastly in theme and subject, from the allegorical travelogue of "The Encantadas" to the haunting psychodrama of "Bartleby, the Scrivener." With the exception of the title story (which was original to the collection), they each were published in "Putnam's Magazine," where they were well received and widely read. Although the book (like all of Meville's later work) was a commercial flop, the stories are highly regarded--and rarely read--today.

Opening the volume is "The Piazza," a charming (bordering on precious) pastoral sketch that frames the collection in much the same way that Hawthorne and Irving framed their collections with a stroll around the Manse or a view of Bracebridge Hall. It provides an almost romantic and (for Melville) rare excursion into "fairy-land" in the daylight of the countryside surrounding his home, but at the close of the story the author warns us that "truth comes in darkness."

The best of the five remaining pieces is, surely, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" (possibly my favorite story written in English); it is the most Kafkaesque story not written by Kafka. The narrator, a Wall Street lawyer whose office resembles a claustrophobic dungeon, hires Bartleby, a supremely competent copyist who subverts the safe order and hierarchy of the firm when he replies "I would prefer not to" when requested to execute tasks he'd rather not perform. From the first act of rebellion to the end of the story, the atmosphere resembles Poe as much as it anticipates Kafka; its bleak views of the market, of madness, and of municipal estrangement are unsettling.

The other stories vary in quality. The wickedly subversive satire of "Benito Cerenno" is based on a true incident in which a transport of slaves overtook their captors; Melville revises the original narrative to condemn the covert racism of the narrator, a "Massachusetts man" who captains the ship that encounters the mutineers and whose liberal, patronizing opinion of the Africans is so unnuanced that he is unable to recognize that a rebellion has occurred. To modern readers, it all seems ridiculously unbelievable and, while remarkably ahead of its time, Melville's version of the episode sometimes suffers from attitudes and stereotypes which have themselves become unfashionable and uncomfortable.

Interesting and clever, "The Lightning-Rod Man" and "The Bell Tower," are ultimately unmemorable, but the only tale that doesn't work for me at all is "The Encantadas," a series of ten travel sketches based on Melville's trip to the Galapagos Islands. Rather than presenting a literary version of Darwin's earlier travels, Melville emulates Dante, presenting an allegorical vision of purgatory on earth, of "cut-throats" and "tyrants" and "cannibals" amidst the dichotomy of the landscape's unforgiving harshness and overwhelming beauty. Of the pieces in the collection, these ten sketches received the most critical attention during Melville's lifetime, and they are still considered masterpieces by academics. There are inarguably brilliant passages and poetic descriptions, but the allegory seems labored and the "tale" as a whole pales in comparison to either Darwin or Dante.

One of Melville's three best books

Published in 1856, THE PIAZZA TALES contains three moderately long stories and three relatively short ones. The short ones can be skipped. The three long ones are among Melville's more notable works; two of them are special.

1) "Bartleby, The Scrivener" is a classic story, arguably the second most important thing that Melville ever wrote. Andrew Delbanco places it "among the great achievements of world literature."

Bartleby is employed by a Wall Street lawyer to be a copy-clerk. At first he seems to be an almost ideal employee, quietly staying in his assigned corner and doing prodigious amounts of work. But when asked to do anything other than copying -- anything whatsoever, whether running an errand or putting his finger on a string to aid another in tying the knot tight over a stack of papers -- Bartleby quietly, firmly says, "I would prefer not to". Eventually his employer learns that Bartleby has taken to sleeping at the office. He never seems to eat, except for ginger-nuts. After a time he declines to work altogether, even to do any copying. When told that in that event he must go, he answers, "I would prefer not".

To tell what becomes of Bartleby would deprive the first-time reader of the singular experience of finding out for himself. Suffice it to say that the tale becomes Kafkaesque (sixty years before "The Trial"). One interpretation -- prompted in part by the story's subtitle, "A Story of Wall Street" -- is that it is an allegory for what capitalism does to its clerical minions. But that doesn't really capture "Bartleby": it as a story and Herman Melville as an author operate at less pat, deeper levels.

2) As difficult as it is to do justice to "Bartleby" in the space of one-third of an Amazon review, it is equally so in the case of "Benito Cereno". The novella remains one of the foremost works of American fiction to address the pervasive insidiousness of slavery and the stereotype-ridden simple-mindedness with which supposedly enlightened, well-meaning whites regarded Negroes. (E.g., "Captain Delano took to Negroes, not philanthropically but genially, like other men to Newfoundland dogs.")

Melville presents his complex morality tale through the story of two ships that meet by chance at a remote island in the Pacific off South America. One is a New England seal-ship; the other turns out to be a Spanish slave ship. It takes the entire novella for the American captain to learn the story behind the anomalous social structure aboard the slave ship and why its captain, Benito Cereno, is so haggard and acts so frightened and squirrely. It turns out that there had been a rebellion aboard the slave ship and that the Negroes now control it; they had orchestrated an elaborate charade to fool the Americans. The American captain was indeed taken in, and it is easy for modern readers also to be deceived by "Benito Cereno" and to misinterpret it. The novella plays on white fears of slave rebellion, it suggests that such rebellion is justified, and it gives the lie to the popular perception of blacks as inferior to whites in intelligence, cunning, and bravery. One writer who recognized "Benito Cereno" for what it is was Ralph Ellison, who used a crucial extract from it as the epigraph to "Invisible Man".

3) "The Encantadas" is a profile of the Galapagos Islands, then also known as the Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles in Spanish. It consists of ten sketches, several loosely connected. It is partly history and natural history, partly travelogue (Melville had stopped there during his years in the Pacific), and partly fiction. The high points are a sketch of the Galapagos tortoise, the story of a Chola woman marooned on one of the islands after her Spanish husband and her brother died in the surf before her eyes, and the tale of a misanthropic castaway, Oberlus, that strikes me as a precursor of sorts to the fiction of Borges. The content of "The Encantadas" might be only one cut above the ordinary, but the prose is two cuts above. It is different than the prose of "Moby-Dick", less protean, a tad more restrained and relaxed, at times even charming.

The Lighting-Rod Man

The Lighting-Rod Man is one of Melville's lesser known stories. Despite the cold, dark setting, it is more comical than most of his works other works. This satire tells about one door-to-door salesman, and how annoying, pushy, and arrogant he was to his perspective customer (Doesn't seem like a lot has change since then), and how he ends up getting thrown out of the house.
The story The Lighting-Rod Man jumps right into the story in the first paragraph and just goes, which makes it much easier to get into and a much easier read for those that have a hard time getting started reading. I feel that it is worthy buying The Piazza Tales even if you just read this one story let alone the five other stories.

Very good book for end to end

I rare give 5 star for any book. It is not my 1st book for HANA. These team of author not just trying to reach HANA. They trying to reach how Hana is implemented in the real world scenario. Anybody moving out of Oracle based client server apps, this is the book they need to learn Hana how it is used in real world.
Somewhere the Author(s) told that you do not need to keep search over the internet to know complete implementation of Hana and only this book will take care of you. yep that is correct.
Before reading this book, is used to have knowledge of Hana db and its power. Now I have better understanding of Hana landscape.

NOT for kids

Most books in the 80 - 100 page range with these types of titles we assume are for our 10 year old Minecraft crazy kids. Most of the books we have downloaded to our sons Kindle have been great. This book is NOT for children. The characters swear and bully each other and that was only in the first few pages. My son even walked in and told me I should get my money back because 'this book was not appropriate for him'. Just a fair warning to parents as I saw all 5 star reviews and just bought it based on # of pages on the assumption it was age appropriate like the others.

Great story, but terrible editing and BAD LANGUAGE

My son, age 11, is loving this book. But I cringe every time I have to "beep" out another inappropriate word. I could deal with one or two, but it's every page. Why? I hope Terry Meyer can skip the colorful language next time, it doesn't add to the story!

My son LOVED this book!

My son is an 11 year old 6th grader, and he loves anything related to video games. He is required to read every day for school, but getting him to do so is an interesting task. I only wish that the Minecraft novels were listed on the AR lists for grade school children, its never difficult to get him to read those.

Once I told my son that I bought him another Minecraft novel, he wanted to start reading it right away. This story is not quite as short as the last one that he read, so he was pleasantly surprised to have more to read. Plus as an added bonus, he shares his name with one of the main characters.

The good news? I can use letting him read in the Minecraft novel as a reward for doing the reading that he needs to do. Plus, he's reading more, so its a win/win.

My son's favorite part of the book is the inclusion of some of the famous characters that he knows both from playing the game, and watching Minecraft videos on YouTube. Sky has been one of his favorites to watch on YouTube and he enjoys the part that the Sky character plays in the book.

My son's recommendation for Masters of Minecraft - The Awakening is for anyone who enjoys playing Minecraft, and the more familiar you are the better. The novel may be confusing or less enjoyable for someone not familiar with the game in his opinion.

Thank you for the great story and sparking the love of reading for my son. Now he knows that he enjoys reading, as long as he chooses books that he holds an interest in.

A Good Foot-in-the-Door Book

As one of the technical reviewers, I can verify that this is a very good "foot-in-the-door" book. I had no trouble working my way through the code exercises, and you can download finished code samples as well. I definitely plan to leverage the knowledge I gained in this book, along with further study, to develop online ArcGIS apps that work in a variety of form factors.

The book revolves around using JavaScript and HTML to develop lightweight, responsive, focused, browser-based apps for mobile devices. Good introductions are made of the following important topics: mobile design aspects, Dojo, AMD, ArcGIS API for JavaScript, and Bootstrap. No editing example is provided, but again the emphasis is on developing your first reponsive, mobile-oriented user interfaces. While the actual ArcGIS functionality is restricted to a few items, many additional easy-to-follow examples are available at the ArcGIS for Developers site. Also check out Esri's JavaScript libraries on GitHub.

The final chapter is devoted to Apache Cordova / PhoneGap. Although it's pretty easy to use, I've decided that hybrid apps potentially create more problems than they solve: library compatibility with the WebView component can be a gotcha, and distributing iOS apps costs money.

Warning: Don't expect any offline solutions to appear in this book, and I would advise against pursuing them at all using JavaScript. Although Esri has an offline JavaScript library on GitHub, it's not very robust. Esri says right out in their README that if you want a robust offline solution, you should be using one of the flavors of ArcGIS Runtime. I highly recommend the new Runtime for Qt/QML, as it allows building cross-platform native apps using a single code base. AppStudio for ArcGIS, while still in Beta, promises an even simpler approach by using cloud services to handle the native compilation for you!

This book let you learn how to set up a map interface for any of your mobile web apps, sometimes you get overloaded by code but its sort of a given in a coding book. Its not too complex to read too so you can easily read it in a couple of sittings(its short but in a good way) without studying it too much. If you are going to set up any world map in your web site and you are not going to just paste google maps you need to give this book a shot

I really appreciated “Developing Mobile Web ArcGIS Applications”. The book is beginners driven, so the author explains all the basics. Everything seemed covered without going in too much technicalities. The book is focused in giving us practical skills, that could be extended after.

The first thing I liked is that the author takes time to explain the difference of designing a web application on a mobile platform instead of a desktop browser, something that doesn’t always come to mind at first.

The book covers the basic Esri, Bootstrap and Geolocation APIs, without going in to much details and the tutorial for our “first” ArcGIS mobile web application is concise and well written. It’s easy to follow and to create that app and also provides good practices in web app development.

The step-by-step tutorials allows us to add the most popular features of a web map application, like popups, legend, a search tool and a geocoding tool as well as developing a cross-platform/cross-device application.

I also appreciated the PhoneGap introduction. PhoneGap is a free opensource framework that allows us to create native mobile apps from html and javascript. I’m looking forward to try that one!

I would have liked a part on editing features, if only attributes. It’s mentioned on the book, but never explained how to do it. There’s plenty of example of that on the web, but it would have been nice to have an example in the same reference.

My wife used to give me a hard time about ...

My wife used to give me a hard time about my time using social media. She hinted to the fact that I may have an addiction so I decided to get this book to prove her wrong. Well... after reading Robert's book, I realized that I was on a fast track to being one of the 2-billion who has this addiction. The section dealing with the warning signs really hit home but I could not wait to get to the way to overcome this addiction. Now I am on my way to becoming more balanced in using my social media accounts.

It is a total waste of time

I have been thinking about this topic recently, because of how much I have been using Facebook and Twitter. It is very simple to become addicted to this kind online routine. I am always waiting to get likes, shout outs and tweets so that I feel more popular, but yes! It is a total waste of time. This book helped me to get over it, gave me tips and ideal things that I should do to be more productive. Highly recommended to teens!

About the Author

Sergio J. Rojas G.

Sergio J. Rojas G. is currently a full professor of physics at Universidad Simon Bolivar, Venezuela. Regarding his formal studies, in 1991, he earned a BS in physics with his thesis on numerical relativity from the Universidad de Oriente, Estado Sucre, Venezuela, and then, in 1998, he earned a PhD in physics from the Department of Physics at City College of the City University of New York, where he worked on the applications of fluid dynamics in the flow of fluids in porous media, gaining and developing since then a vast experience in programming as an aid to scientific research via Fortran77/90 and C/C++. In 2001, he also earned a master's degree in computational finance from the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. Sergio's teaching activities involve lecturing undergraduate and graduate physics courses at his home university, Universidad Simon Bolivar, Venezuela, including a course on Monte Carlo methods and another on computational finance. His research interests include physics education research, fluid flow in porous media, and the application of the theory of complex systems and statistical mechanics in financial engineering. More recently, Sergio has been involved in machine learning and its applications in science and engineering via the Python programming language.

Erik A Christensen

Erik A Christensen is a quant analyst/developer in finance and creative industries. He has a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark, with postdoctoral studies at the Levich Institute at the City College of the City University of New York and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. His interests in technology span from Python to F# and Cassandra/Spark. He is active in the meet-up communities in London!

Francisco J. Blanco-Silva

Francisco J. Blanco-Silva is the owner of a scientific consulting company―Tizona Scientific Solutions―and adjunct faculty in the Department of Mathematics of the University of South Carolina. He obtained his formal training as an applied mathematician at Purdue University. He enjoys problem solving, learning, and teaching. This book starts by providing a good detailed introduction into the use of Numpy arrays. It continues with a very limited introduction into the many powerful SciPy modules. In grad school (two year ago) I used almost all of the math presented in this book, however the presentation in this book was so limited that I failed to gain much SciPy knowledge from this book.

For a person interested in SciPy from a general approach, I would suggest browsing the SciPy website, specifically the modules and their documentation. For a person interested in a particular module of SciPy, I would suggest in investing in a title which is specific to that need.

Packt Pub generally has excellent books, such as their some of their Python books. This title however seems to fall short of what I have come to expect of Packt.

good starting point for Scipy

I bought this book in electronic version because I needed to learn the basic capabilities of Python SciPy. The book starts with a general introduction to Numpy arrays, which are the building blocks of every numerical computation in Python, and so constitute a good starting point for this book. Then the book covers different topics that can be tackled with SciPy: Linear Algebra (e.g. solution of linear systems, pseudoinverse...), Numerical Analysis (e.g. interpolation, regression, optimization... ), Signal Processing (e.g. DFT, filter design... ), Data Mining (a set of tool to compute statistics, clustering and so on), Computational Geometry and Interaction with other programming language. Each topic is covered with a good detail and with working examples, which make this book a good reference (or at least a good starting point) for one's special needs. Also Python's plotting capabilities are covered in the book, as many examples show results by means of different types of graphs or figures.
