About the Author
Bonny Pierce Lhotka is an inventor and innovator, and is a co-founder of the digital artist collaborative, Digital Atelier, whose members research and develop techniques to leverage digital imaging in fine art application. Lhotka organized “Digital Atelier: A printmaking studio for the 21st century” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum where she was an artist-in-residence. She is a recipient of the Smithsonian/Computerworld Technology in the Arts Award and is the producer of educational DVDs from Digital Art Studio Seminars. Lhotka is the author of Digital Alchemy: Printmaking techniques for fine art, photography, and mixed media and The Last Layer: New methods in digital printing for photography, fine art, and mixed media.

For the Photographer-Artist

I have been waiting months for this book to come out, because I am a huge fan of Bonny Lhotka’s artwork and the art materials she has come up with, and how she is continually exploring new ideas and finding new inspirations. She is a renowned artist and this book is more like detailed techniques and ideas for people who are already involved in this process, or for those who are determined to delve into it. There are a number of inspiring examples of her artwork included in the book, but do not get this book if you are looking for some quick tips or fun ideas for a Saturday craft.
But for photographers who want to create unique images and go beyond a photo printed on photo paper and learn to create unique works of art on glass, wood, metal, etc, or artists who want to incorporate digital images, this is a great resource. There are thousands of books on photography, books on art, and books on craft ideas, but there are very few books that address this combination of art and photography.
Two criticisms that I see people could easily make: 1. She makes use of (DASS) materials that she has developed and you have to buy them from her. True! But if you have done any experimenting with, or research on transfer materials, you will find that there is no comparison to the quality and consistency of the ones she has developed. 2. The projects and descriptions are overwhelmingly technical. Also true. But that is often the point of a book. The distortion filters and distressed reflectors intrigued me and I’ll probably try some out, but in a simplified way. If, however, I do end up hooked, I can then follow her instructions on making the more complicated ones and even building that filter holder.
I’m giving this book a five star rating because, while I know it is not a book with general appeal, it totally succeeds as the book for me! And even though there is a lot of technical instruction, I’d rather have more than less. For now I’ll use Windex to clean my glass, but if I want to make her specialized glass cleaning paste, I know where to find the recipe.

Bonny's books are educational and novices have to start from the beginning. Get her books and you will see how easier it gets as you read her latest one. Who said it was simple? No, it involves trying over and over again until you feel comfortable with her methods in your own environment. I have been her biggest fan from the very beginning and did a very successful exhibit on Tibet a few years ago. I am happy to read about her latest discovery on her water base sauce which will make the work easier. Most important is to expand the creativity and find ways to take photographs and show them on all kinds of material. Bonny does that beautifully. Her explanations are clear and she has opened a huge door to photographers who are tired of printing on digital papers. This book offers dozens of possibilities to express oneself through photography.

Front line, far out and groovy!!!

Bonnie's books are a treasure trove of materials and ideas-- not just class projects ... I have 4 of her books and I refer to them not only for their formulas but for her work flow/ methods and out of the box inspired thinking.. This is studio alchemy!! one must work into the materials and become comfortable with the print making and then use it to further one's own vision... It is both worth the price of the books and the dedicated materials to accomplish these alternative photo results.. I have tried other materials and DASS ART is totally the better system and product..
This book has sections that may not immediately seem useful-- the filters-- but it is the IDEA of self created original studio equipment that is the deal.. Her's is a mantra of unique creations.. and visions of tomorrow's art and artists.. this is front line, far out, and groovy!
