Review

"If you’re a parent of teens or preteens, or you work with teens or preteens, you’ve undoubtedly experienced the phenomenon of teens stuck to their screens–whether it’s phones, tablets, computers, or other technology.  And, you’ve likely noticed the difficulty of talking with these tech-savy kids who have grown up not knowing what life is like without technology at their fingertips.  In her latest book, Screens and Teens: Connecting With Our Kids in a Wireless World, Dr. Kathy Koch, helps parents and youth workers explore these topics and discover principles and practices to connect with teens who seem inseparable from their screens.

Koch explores the following topics:

technology and our deepest human needs;
truths about today’s teens;
less and more (less screen time, more family time);
lies that come through to teens through technology;
and the ultimate connectivity.

While Koch provides a lot of amazing advice, personal anecdotes and real-life stories, she also takes a biblical approach to communication, which I wholeheartedly appreciate.  And, there’s a discussion guide included at the back of the book, and its purpose is to jumpstart discusions about technology and its influence.  These are great questions that can be used in a small group study setting, in a parenting class, or even by parents and their teens.

This book is full of practical advice.  There were some “Oh, yeah.  That’s the truth” moments and there were some of those lightbulb, “Now it makes sense moments!”  I’ve come away from Screens and Teens with some very easy-to-implement strategies and ideas as I navigate life with a teen and do my best to disciple her to become more Christ-like.

I highly recommend Screens and Teens for parents, youth pastors, youth teachers–anyone who deals with teens regularly.  It’s an easy, yet challenging read, but one that will equip you to better connect with and communicate with the teens and preteens in your life.  Learn more at www.screensandteens.com

A book of hope, truth, and ideas to point you and your teens to use screens well!
By Sarah Poling
Want to play two truths and a lie with your teens and their screens? Read #screensandteens to help play with some 'we can' statements to help your teens connect to life. It's a book I think we need to read long before our kids our teens, and I also think some of us who love the 21st Century tools and media, may need to read for ourselves.

In the book, Dr. Koch presents five truths we need to be aware of and the lies that we tell to keep up with our wrong thinking. She explains each one, it's connection to screens, and then shares examples of the truth with simple fixes.

Teens find their purpose, security and identity these days in their social media, and unfortunately so do some adults. This is the world we are in, and it can seem like it's not going to be an easy fix. But that's why I loved this book. We find hope and help to move on!

Dr. Kathy suggests some great ideas, resources, and concepts to help us lead our teens (and maybe even our own minds) toward maturity. She takes this challenge heartily through the rest of the book!

She gets us to THINK. She gives us a plan for moving on with HOPE and knowing we can overcome.

So how do we 'fix' these thoughts in our kids (or our own brains), read Screens and Teens to find out! It's a fast read, easily comprehended, but probably a book I will re-read on occasion, as imparting the truth into even my brain will be a battle of the old vs new nature in my life.

I've had the privilege to read an advanced copy of this book, and I was asked to review it, but I have to say, it's a book I will read more than once, I found it helpful, inspiring and practical. So I'd suggest others purchasing it!! And I wasn't required to give the book a favorable review, this is my own opinion.

More than just for teens.
By JasonH
I was able to read the book before release. I normally do not take notes on a book, but this one had me writing pages. Many of the topics in Dr. Koch's book made me think about my plan of action with my teenage children, but more than that she made me think about the adults and just how over stimulated we can be with our screens. I had not realized that those under the age of 34 have always had technology at their fingertips. I am forty and remember when our college had two computers on the world wide web. Now we deal with instant gratification of information on a phone, and it is the five year old that finds the information first.

I am starting to see just how out of reality our society is becoming due to the need to have things now. I have observe parents actually miss events in their child's life because they are saving it on their phone. They are physically in the room, but the joy of the moment is lost because they are looking at it through a screen. Then downloading the images to the social networks where their virtual friends will "like" the picture and follow them. Depending on how many "likes" you get, the number will determine the person's self-worth. Some parents are not able to just savor the time and experience. Is it any wonder we are seeing kids addicted to screens and have a hard time with social cues?

Each chapter has a list of questions that will help you guide your teens through a healthy relationship with their technology. Beginning with the natural needs of a person, and helping the reader see just how much technology is changing us. The questions can also help with understanding just how connected you and your teen are to screens of all varieties. Ask yourself, would I be able to go a week without a screen? Now ask, besides work related screen time, can I go one week without a screen? Have someone time you for a two hour period and then guess how much time you spent. I believe you will be surprised.

I have had the pleasure of being with Dr. Kathy in her seminars and always choose her conferences because her insights and research methods are trustworthy. I highly recommend this book to teens and parents for whom the book was written, but I also think that a tremendous benefit would go to parents of children. If you see what is here in the teenage years, you can already have your boundaries made at an early age.

Be proactive in your parenting. Set boundaries early, watch for problem areas, love God, and pray as you go through your journey.

A book that explains the emotional and spiritual impact technology has on teens and how to deal with it!
By Gini Pickle
If you don’t know where to start with tackling technology, Dr. Kath Koch gives you the direction you need in this book. She deals with the basic human needs that our teens have and how technology is trying to replace these. She deals with the five lies that teens deal with in today’s wireless world: #1-I am the center of my own universe, #2- I deserve to be happy all the time, #3-I must have choices, #4-I am my own authority and #5-Information is all I need so I don’t need teachers. If you are hearing comments like these from your teens, then this book is for you. She shares how to respond, in a biblical way, to these lies.
The author deals with Tech addiction and shares what to look for: fatigue, stressed and overwhelmed and depressed and escaping. (Pages 48-56). She shares Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane’s ABC system (From their book Growing Up Social) to evaluate how technology may be a factor in your child’s behavior: “Attitude: What is my child’s attitude like after the screen time? Behavior: How does the content encourage my child to behave? And Character: What character traits are being modeled and picked up? (Page 58).
She also shares many stories from parents and what their solution was to help their teens with their addiction to their cell phones. For example she shares, “Recently, I saw a stack of six cellphones in the middle of a restaurant table. I introduced myself to the family and told the teens they were fortunate to have parents who wanted to talk with them. The teens agreed! Then one told me if someone reached for a phone before their dad paid the bill, that person had to pay for dinner. We laughed as they admitted that was a strong deterrent” (Page 61).
This is a very hands-on book for parents in this tech-driven world that we live in today. I highly recommend it!
