'White Nights' and Other Stories, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

In the stories in this volume Dostoevsky explores both the figure of the dreamer divorced from reality and also his own ambiguous attitude to utopianism, themes central to many of his great novels. In ‘White Nights’ the apparent idyll of the dreamer's romantic fantasies disguises profound lone-liness and estrangement from 'living life'. Despite his sentimental friendship with Nastenka, his final withdrawal into the world of the imagination anticipates the retreat into the 'underground' of many of Dostoevsky's later intellectual heroes. ‘The Dream of a Ridiculous Man’ shows how such withdrawal from reality can end in spiritual desolation and moral indifference and how, in Dostoevsky's view, the tragedy of the alienated individual can be resolved only by the rediscov-ery of a sense of compassion and responsibility towards fellow human beings. ‘Notes from the Underground’ is one of the most profound works of nineteenth-century literature. A probing, speculative book, often regarded as a forerunner of the Existentialist movement, it examines the important political and philosophical questions that were current in Russia and Europe at the time.

About the Author
Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist, short story writer and essayist whose literary works explored human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual context of nineteenth-century Russia. A student of the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute, Dostoyevsky initially worked as an engineer, but began translating books to earn extra money. The publication of his first novel, Poor Folk, allowed him to join St. Petersburg s literary circles. A prolific writer, Dostoyevsky is best known for work from the latter part of his career, including the classic novels Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. Dostoyevsky s influence extends to authors as diverse as Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and Jean-Paul Sartre, among many others. He died in 1881.

Nice collection of Garnett translations
By Timothy Wheeler
I bought this book for the short story "An Honest Thief". Contrary to the review of R. Brandly, I must say that this book is of standard paperback quality and is worth every penny. There is a table of contents, which lists the following:

An Honest Thief
An Unpleasant Predicament
Another Man's Wife
The Peasant Marey
The Crocodile
Bobok
The Dream of a Ridiculous Man
White Nights
A Christmas Tree and a Wedding
A Faint Heart

All of these stories are translated by Constance Garnett. Although serious Dostoyevsky scholars tend to be critical of Garnett's work, I find these translations to be enjoyable to read. My only complaint is that Dover didn't include more of Dostoyevky's work (e.g., "Novel in Nine Letters", "Mr. Prokharchin"). At only 256 pages, it seems that there is room for a few more. However, given the extremely low price of this book, I still give it five stars.

Great Edition of Dostoyevsky's Short Stories
By T. Brewer
I bought the book new from amazon and will say that the poor reviews of this book are not true. The book has a Table of Contents, Headings, and page numbers. It is not a "raw scan" or a "lump of words." Worth the money for short works from one of the greatest Russian authors.

Dostoyevsky had a sense of humor??
By A. Simon
Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite writers, a psychological writer, a political, anti-totalitarian writer, his most famous work being the masterpiece Crime and Punishment.
This edition brings together ten of his short stories, of varying lengths. His most famous, most popular short story is the surrealistic Crocodile. As far as style, it is ahead of its time, anticipating the genre of “magical realism.” It is about a man who is swallowed whole by a crocodile that is on exhibition. Instead of dying, her remains alive inside the animal and communicates freely with persons outside the reptile. As with so many of his characters the victim pompously gives forth utopian theories that all must adhere to.
Crocodile, Bobok, and Another Man’s Wife shows that Dostoyevsky had a great sense of humor, something that seems to be out of character for those who are acquainted with his tragic novels and his equally tragic life. In this, he is like Edgar Allan Poe, who is famous for his Gothic stories and his tragic life, but who also had a great sense of humor. With both men, the tragedy has tended to eclipse the humor.
Another characteristic of Dostoyevsky that one finds both in his novels and in the short stories, White Night, An Unpleasant Predicament, A faint heart and An Honest thief is the ambivalence of some of his characters; they go back and forth in intent as to their plan of action, or of their feelings.
As to this volume, I heartily recommend these literary tidbits. They are thoroughly stimulating and enjoyable. And, as with all of Dover publications, the price is a bargain.
