An Interesting Read

It was fascinating reading a sci-fi work from that long ago (ca. 1900), and seeing what at least this author saw as possible in the cosmos. Although it was a rocky read at first, as the formal language of the day ands the author's style were difficult to get used to, I eventually got into the book more enthusiastically, and overall enjoyed the novel. I would recommend it to any die hard reader of this genre.

Quaint humor

It wasn't trying to be funny, though. First published in 1901, this captures many aspects of the culture of the day, not least the ossified view of women. It includes plenty of darting hither and thither around the solar system, to the Moon, Mars, and Venus, with advanced life present everywhere you look. How do we know it's advanced? It looks pretty much like us, and we all know nothing could be more advanced, not in the ways that matter.
On the Moon, the age of greatness has come and gone, and Darwinian decay has ousted humankind's heirs from their lofty position. Residents of Mars embody logical amorality - which the author conveys as a brutal immorality. Then, on Venus, goodness abounds. It fills the simple but beautiful people of the planet, who communicate in the universal language of music. It inheres in every shrub and living thing. Any more, and they would have tripped over raw nuggets of unrefined niceness at every corner. With a decidedly theological turn of thought, the Earthlings withdraw, afraid that their taint of Original Sin would contaminate their hosts' world.
Brief, amusing, and available in the public domain, I find this largely of historical interest. It's what Doc Smith might have read in his younger years. Given that, it's possible to see Smith's Lensmen and Triplanetary books as an intermediate stage of development, part-way between romances of this sort and science fiction as we've know it from about the 1960s onward.

Totally fantastic!

This book has it all: rich man with space ship takes girl all over the solar system, fights nazi martians, has aerial battles, and sight sees in other strange places.
Kind of book that you forget yourself in. A good read, not something you will remember for years, but worth reading if you like space opera with weird plots and good writing. Like I do!
