Review
(in full The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home) Short tale written by Charles Dickens as a Christmas book for 1845 but published in 1846. The title creature is a sort of barometer of life at the home of John Peerybingle and his much younger wife Dot. When things go well, the cricket on the hearth chirps; it is silent when there is sorrow. Tackleton, a jealous old man, poisons John's mind about Dot, but the cricket through its supernatural powers restores John's confidence and all ends happily. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Back Cover
With the publication of A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens almost single-handedly created the genre of the "Christmas story." And while that beloved classic remains among the best known in the field, Dickens also wrote a number of other delightful tales associated with Yuletide.
This volume features three of the best. Combining realism with fantasy, and with kindness and affection for the poor a dominant theme, they include the title story, a charming tale of a pleasant and simple home life; "The Holly-Tree," a lighthearted story of love reclaimed in a quiet country inn; and "The Haunted House," an entertaining account of a belligerent ghost's effect on the lives of those with whom he shares a home.
Written with Dickens's familiar flair for characterization, comic incident, and the picturesque, these stories will delight readers with their unusual charms and nostalgic re-creation of Victorian Christmases past.
Original Dover (1994) selection of stories reprinted from a standard edition.

Some Good Some Bad
By Love To Read
The Cricket on the Hearth was a great story. It kept my interest and was an effective short story. The Holly-Tree was good in the sense that it provided a really good picture of British inns and "Dickens" England. The Haunted House was quite boring. I gave it many chances thinking that it would improve but it only got worse. If it wasn't for the third story, I would have given the book a 4 star rating but it's worth buying for the first two. And reading it around Christmas time is a good idea.

lovely little book
By Laurke
Sweet story of reconciliation after various deceptions; full of trust, and love. The cricket is a household fairy, making this Dickens book a fairy tale.

A good short story
By Marion L. Moore
The first few pages were confusing and slow. Difficult to get into. But once things became clear, the rest was easily followed and enjoyed. Interesting that Dickens considered this among his Christmas Books series. It was heart warming and a quick, easy read. But not close to A Christmas Story.
