About the Author
American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

Drama, power, passion: a great novel of the American West
By Robin P. Flynn
I started reading Zane Grey's novels about 15 years ago, when a great-uncle told me of the times, as a youth in the 1920s, he had read Grey's novels on cold nights in front of a fire. It must be close to a decade ago when I first read this title, and I can't help but re-read it every few years. It infuses me with wonder and awe every time.
I knew enough about Grey's novels, by the time I read this one, to know that Riders of the Purple Sage was considered his best. But when I got to the end of The U P Trail, I said to myself, "This is the greatest book I have ever read." This novel, which is focused upon the construction of the Union-Pacific Railroad, has something incredibly passionate and elemental about it that not only elevates it above Grey's other numerous titles, including Riders, but makes it a giant in its genre. Grey himself says in his dedication that "it is the book for which I have written all the others."
The book's scope is akin to a giant mirror being held up to reflect, in one grand and allegorical image, the breadth of the human experience in the building of the American West, and the destruction of its frontier culture. It's a tale of heroism, virtue, sacrifice, greed, personal ruin, redemption, betrayal, saintliness, violence, bigotry, lust, depravity, nobility, and so many other aspects of human nature it's hard to list them all here. It is filled with unforgettable characters who represent every social group involved with both the building of the railroad itself, and the white man's ambition to expand the nation to the Pacific coast. Some of the incidents and moments created by Grey will remain with readers long after they have finished the book, if not forever. And central to it all is the tortured story of the lovers Neale and Allie.
As to drawbacks: modern readers may struggle, in places, with the novel's tone and language. The dialogue of its characters sometimes contains the vernacular and political perspective of the era in which the book was written, and held up to modern standards it could occasionally be labeled politically incorrect. Readers may also have trouble accepting the extra-innocent, almost saintly Allie, and the numerous occasions in which her virtue is preserved against all odds.
Generally, though, I believe that the power and beauty of the book will be the primary impression left with those who read it. It should not be missed by anyone who is a Zane Grey fan OR a fan of historical fiction pertaining to the American West. It's a great view of the legacy in which all Americans live today.

The single greatest western epic ever written.
By OAKSHAMAN
Without doubt, this is the single greatest western novel that I have ever read. It was a gift given to me as a boy, and I have reread it periodically ever since.

This is a magnificant epic of a novel in a single volume. The collossal enterprise of building the first transcontinental railroad from start to finish connects everything, but is really about Neale's love for Allie Lee- and everything he and their friends go through to rescue her. I know that sounds more like a romance novel than it does a western, but, trust me, this is THE western. You actually care about the many skillfully drawn characters- and it hits you hard when they die in heroic sacrifice. I know that some readers will see the characters as western charactatures and stereotypes, but that is only because Hollywood later overused them- the book came first.

By the way, Larry Red King's rescue of Allie Lee from Belle's "Dance Hall" is still the greatest single scene in any western novel, or film, as far as I am concerned.

Oh yeah, not all the language is "politically correct" these days. That's because the men who built this nation weren't politically correct- empire builders never are.

One more thing, the hero of this novel is an engineer, a civil engineer, and a great role model. At least to me, he was.

The Union Pacific Story
By Charles Wheeler
What can one say about the greatest undertaking ever devised by man--the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860's--and its exposition in story form by the greatest writer of the American West, Zane Grey. Historically accurate from beginning to end, descriptively unmatched by any other writer, and filled with characters enough to fill a mini-series. Of course, there is love found and love lost and then found again; it wouldn't be Zane Grey without that! But beyond the romance, the reader will find the heroism, the strength, the men and women with the kind of fortitude and vision that it took to make this country what it is today. And yes, there is a tragic side to the book. The passing of a life-style; the passing of a people--the Indian; for the progress of the railroad with its technology and its ability to bring huge numbers of people into the country meant the destruction of the Indian. I would recommend this book whole-heartedly for anyone--historian, or pleasure reader. And these Walter J. Black editions will last a life time. Also available in hardback is the unexpurgated version, Union Pacific, by Five Star Western which came out in 2009 telling the story the way Zane Grey "really" wrote it.

About the Author

Usama Dar

Usama Dar is a seasoned software developer and architect. During his 14 years' career, he has worked extensively with PostgreSQL and other database technologies. He worked on PostgreSQL internals extensively while he was working for EnterpriseDB. Currently, he lives in Munich where he works for Huawei's European Research Center. He designs the next generation of high-performance database systems based on open source technologies, such as PostgreSQL, which are used under high workloads and strict performance requirements.

Hannu Krosing

Hannu Krosing was a PostgreSQL user before it was rewritten to use SQL as its main query language in 1995. Therefore, he has both the historic perspective of its development, as well as almost 20 years of experience in using it to solve various real-life problems. He was the first database administrator and database architect at Skype, where he invented the sharding language PL/Proxy that allows you to scale the user database in order to work with billions of users. After he left Skype at the end of 2006―about a year after it was bought by eBay―he has been working as a PostgreSQL consultant with 2ndQuadrant, the premier PostgreSQL consultancy with a global reach and local presence in most parts of the world. He has coauthored PostgreSQL 9 Administration Cookbook, Packt Publishing, together with one of the main PostgreSQL developers, Simon Riggs.

Jim Mlodgenski

Jim Mlodgenski is the CTO of OpenSCG, a professional services company focused on leveraging open source technologies for strategic advantage. He was formerly the CEO of StormDB, a database cloud company focused on horizontal scalability. Prior to StormDB, he has held highly technical roles at Cirrus Technology, Inc., EnterpriseDB, and Fusion Technologies. Jim is also a fervent advocate of PostgreSQL. He is on the board of the United States PostgreSQL Association as well as a part of the organizing teams of the New York PostgreSQL User Group and Philadelphia PostgreSQL User Group.

Kirk Roybal

Kirk Roybal has been an active member of the PostgreSQL community since 1998. He has helped organize user groups in Houston, Dallas, and Bloomington, IL. He has mentored many junior database administrators and provided cross-training to senior database engineers. He has provided solutions using PostgreSQL for reporting, business intelligence, data warehousing, applications, and development support. He saw the scope of PostgreSQL when his first small-scale business customer asked for a web application. At that time, competitive database products were either extremely immature or cost prohibitive.

Good book for Oracle PL/SQL programmers, as well as new database programmers
By C. Pollaro
This is an excellent book for anyone looking to explore PostgreSQL with an Oracle background. PostgreSQL, like Oracle, supports robust database programming. If you are a PL/SQL developer and are looking to explore what PostgreSQL has to offer for a developer, this is the book for you. There aren't too many books available for PostgreSQL programming, but this book does a great job exploring most of the avenues of PostgreSQL programming. The major difference between Oracle and PostgreSQL is the variety of languages available to program, which include Python and PostgreSQL's version of PL/SQL - PLpgSQL.
This book is also written in a way that should be understandable to most programmers that haven't programmed in the database before. It covers a wide range of topics, including installing and setting up pgAdminIII and debugging your server-side programs.

Very good book if you're interested in server-side PostgreSQL programming
By Book reader
Very good book for anyone using (or planning to use) server-side programming functionality of PostgreSQL.
This 2nd edition updated for PostgreSQL 9.4 (and with size increased to ~300 pages) covers the following :
- PL/pgsql (most detailed coverage including debugging)
- PL/Proxy (one of the authors is it's original developer so I expect this chapter to be fully accurate)
- PL/Python
- PL/Tcl
- PL/Perl
as well as writing new functions in C and C++ and implementing and publishing other PostgreSQL expensions.
Personally I can't give it 5 stars because it doesn't cover PL/R and PL/sh but if you're not intereted in those, it's definitely closer to 5 stars.
Overall, definitely recommended.

Great book about writing code on PostgreSQL server
By xmen
Great book about writing code on PostgreSQL server.

Pros: Step by step samples to guide you writing code. very informative. There is useful information that not included in the official documentary.

Cons: some minor error in the sample codes introduced during the second edition. For example, at Chapter 9 section "create function add(int, int)" , the code " AS 'usr/lib/postgresql/9.3/lib/add_func', 'add_ab_null' " should be " AS 'usr/lib/postgresql/9.3/lib/add_func', 'add_ab' ". This error does't exist in first edition.

Review of The Angel of Terror
By Rosalyn Sperling
This book was really fun. It shows you how blinded people can be by someone's looks. In this story, everyone (including the heroine) are ready to excuse any strange behavior just because the woman is beautiful and can't believe such a person can be evil by nature. I enjoyed it as one of the first books I read for free on my Kindle. I would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys an old-fashioned murder mystery. It's well worth the time you put into it. I was sorry when I got to the end.

By Amazon Customer from Virginia
This is not the kind of book that I read, but I was looking for a bit of a change. I started reading and found it about impossible to put down. The heroine was perfect, the criminals (especially Jean) were ruthless . The book flowed evenly, until the part that made my jaw drop from surprise! The ending was pretty abrupt, but I guess there was no point in going further. Mr. Wallace put out a wonderful book, that is about honest and good people, as well as the devious killers without the gore and bad language so prevalent today.

Nicely Done Classic Suspense Yarn!
By Don Kidwell
Preceded by a fine, several page long introduction/biography of the author together with mentions/short synapses of films, television and plays of which is based on his body of works. I'm going to spend long hours watching many of these gems so long as I can find them on Netflix. Sort of wishing there was an ability to jump immediately to the story but a very good book, nonetheless!

'White Nights' and Other Stories, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

In the stories in this volume Dostoevsky explores both the figure of the dreamer divorced from reality and also his own ambiguous attitude to utopianism, themes central to many of his great novels. In ‘White Nights’ the apparent idyll of the dreamer's romantic fantasies disguises profound lone-liness and estrangement from 'living life'. Despite his sentimental friendship with Nastenka, his final withdrawal into the world of the imagination anticipates the retreat into the 'underground' of many of Dostoevsky's later intellectual heroes. ‘The Dream of a Ridiculous Man’ shows how such withdrawal from reality can end in spiritual desolation and moral indifference and how, in Dostoevsky's view, the tragedy of the alienated individual can be resolved only by the rediscov-ery of a sense of compassion and responsibility towards fellow human beings. ‘Notes from the Underground’ is one of the most profound works of nineteenth-century literature. A probing, speculative book, often regarded as a forerunner of the Existentialist movement, it examines the important political and philosophical questions that were current in Russia and Europe at the time.

About the Author
Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist, short story writer and essayist whose literary works explored human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual context of nineteenth-century Russia. A student of the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute, Dostoyevsky initially worked as an engineer, but began translating books to earn extra money. The publication of his first novel, Poor Folk, allowed him to join St. Petersburg s literary circles. A prolific writer, Dostoyevsky is best known for work from the latter part of his career, including the classic novels Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. Dostoyevsky s influence extends to authors as diverse as Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and Jean-Paul Sartre, among many others. He died in 1881.

Nice collection of Garnett translations
By Timothy Wheeler
I bought this book for the short story "An Honest Thief". Contrary to the review of R. Brandly, I must say that this book is of standard paperback quality and is worth every penny. There is a table of contents, which lists the following:

An Honest Thief
An Unpleasant Predicament
Another Man's Wife
The Peasant Marey
The Crocodile
Bobok
The Dream of a Ridiculous Man
White Nights
A Christmas Tree and a Wedding
A Faint Heart

All of these stories are translated by Constance Garnett. Although serious Dostoyevsky scholars tend to be critical of Garnett's work, I find these translations to be enjoyable to read. My only complaint is that Dover didn't include more of Dostoyevky's work (e.g., "Novel in Nine Letters", "Mr. Prokharchin"). At only 256 pages, it seems that there is room for a few more. However, given the extremely low price of this book, I still give it five stars.

Great Edition of Dostoyevsky's Short Stories
By T. Brewer
I bought the book new from amazon and will say that the poor reviews of this book are not true. The book has a Table of Contents, Headings, and page numbers. It is not a "raw scan" or a "lump of words." Worth the money for short works from one of the greatest Russian authors.

Dostoyevsky had a sense of humor??
By A. Simon
Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite writers, a psychological writer, a political, anti-totalitarian writer, his most famous work being the masterpiece Crime and Punishment.
This edition brings together ten of his short stories, of varying lengths. His most famous, most popular short story is the surrealistic Crocodile. As far as style, it is ahead of its time, anticipating the genre of “magical realism.” It is about a man who is swallowed whole by a crocodile that is on exhibition. Instead of dying, her remains alive inside the animal and communicates freely with persons outside the reptile. As with so many of his characters the victim pompously gives forth utopian theories that all must adhere to.
Crocodile, Bobok, and Another Man’s Wife shows that Dostoyevsky had a great sense of humor, something that seems to be out of character for those who are acquainted with his tragic novels and his equally tragic life. In this, he is like Edgar Allan Poe, who is famous for his Gothic stories and his tragic life, but who also had a great sense of humor. With both men, the tragedy has tended to eclipse the humor.
Another characteristic of Dostoyevsky that one finds both in his novels and in the short stories, White Night, An Unpleasant Predicament, A faint heart and An Honest thief is the ambivalence of some of his characters; they go back and forth in intent as to their plan of action, or of their feelings.
As to this volume, I heartily recommend these literary tidbits. They are thoroughly stimulating and enjoyable. And, as with all of Dover publications, the price is a bargain.

Really is the The Missing Manual
By Secryt
I'm normally not a strategy guide person. Occasionally I'll get a collector's edition if I really love the game, just to have some memorabilia. And sometimes I like to have a guide for RPGs. Unfortunately the advent of DLC has come to make guides a risky purchase if you are genuinely hoping to use it to guide you through a game. Take for instance if you were to purchase the guide to Destiny - the game today looks very different than the game at launch. On top of new content, the entire game has been rebalanced and information on weapons would be obsolete, gear level, raid locations, and even PvP maps would be useless.

So you can imagine my trepidation of purchasing a guide for a game that has already been announced that an entire 25% of the characters will be added through DLC. But after playing Evolve this week I realized that 1) it's a tough game and 2) I should be humble and admit I need some help. So I decided to pick this up at a local store that was having a special on it. I found that almost every page had information that I found useful. With 35 matches under my belt, I felt like a novice while reading this guide. It reads more like a narrative than necessarily a jump back-and-forth guide that I was used to. I supposed if you know you’ll play as Support you can skip that section. I find Evolve most fun to play while selecting “no preference” and letting the game drop me into any role. It keeps things fresh and interesting. As much as I love Monster, sometimes I need a break from the anxiety inducing game of chase.

On top of the fact this guide is for a game with DLC coming, it’s also for a multiplayer game, not a game with a story or open world. Guides for those games will often guide you through the story missions and each part of it, more like an instruction booklet. This guide is truly a 'strategy' guide and it does a great job of giving you strategy. Like the game it serves, I find that it lived up to expectations. I'm sure you could probably string together videos online with people giving advice for each map, character, and monster, but this puts it all together for you. The pages are colorful, and full of pictures and text alike. Another possibly overlooked feature is the inclusion of all the maps along with suggestions for traps, evolve locations, and other POIs. Although I don't think this is as useful during the match as some other guides may be to other games (like the map guide for Halo: The Master Chief Collection), I’ve found myself looking at them when I’m not playing or right before a match, to give me an idea of where I want to go and where the Evolve spots may be if I’m in the vicinity.

Playing as a hunter it's obviously hard to manage your team of other humans with differing ability levels, but I've done much better in the two days I've had this - in addition I will often achieve level 3 without the hunters ever finding me; in part to early game stealth strategies I’ve garnered from the guide. And now, any match I've played a monster, I've won. It's difficult to explain just how much strategy is in this, but here's an example I'll paraphrase: use decoy as a wraith, while the hunters are engaging your puppet, circle around in stealth, and then pounce just as the decoy is gone; the hunter will be pinned and the others will be disoriented for a moment so you can attack and then warp away. I did that strategy to the T and found it paid off.

If you’re like me and genuinely like the game want to get better then think about picking this up. Evolve is a complex game, with long single game sessions. Even with it’s fast-paced tracking, it has a ‘slower’ feel to it. NOT like Battlefield where you plod again only to get taken out before you even see anyway, but it definitely doesn’t cater to the hyper active gamer out there.

I know this isn't a review of Evolve itself, but there's a string of users who are down-voting any positive review of the game. It wouldn't surprise me if they made their way to this product as well.

Literally the worst strategy guide I've seen for a game
By Rob
l always get guides for all games l play for extra information and things l may have missed but this is up there on biggest disappointments. Each character has 4 pages of beyond obvious information that anyone who has played the game for 1 day could tell you. 'The shotgun is ideal for close range. Press primary weapon and press the trigger to fill your foe with buck shots.' and they fill it with in game quotes and pictures to fill up as much as space as they can. The map descriptions have just a few sentences with no real advice in it as well. The more I go through it, the more shocked that BradyGames said to the writers that this was up to their standard to publish.

l usually dont even write reviews but this guide is so bad I had to. The ONLY good thing about this guide is l can read exact number values for things like damage, speed increase % ect.

When compared to the Ultra Street Fighter 4 guide, its mindblowing. The Ultra Street Fighter 4 guide is highly in detail, though having more writers. Being a tournament competitor in Ultra Street Fighter 4, I was not disappointed at all in the guide and I was going to be very picky since I expected to know most information.

Maybe the guide was written too quickly or they had to make it basic because of potential changes the game could have before its release after the beta but its just way too shallow. Anyone who has played any video game doesn't need advice that the shotgun is good for close range, the rocket launcer is good for long range and that grenades are good for flushing out the opponent. They also hardly note any good team combinations which there are a few that are highly effective that everyone currently playing knows and talks about. Again, I'm just going to assume because it was written before the actual release of the game and because there could be changes since beta, they had to write the guide very shallow.

The pic below is literally HALF of the entire section written on the character Hyde. 2 of the 4 pages.

More of a beginners manual than a competitive strategy guide; also quite a bit of typo's and contradictions
By Maynard
There is a bit of useful information in here and some tips and tricks that I would not have thought of. It is cool to know the exact damage that each gun does as well as the specific cooldown times, but following this you would think that they would tell you exact health pools? (They do show how many bars each monster has at each stage, but that isn't exact for how much damage you need to do). Also the breakdowns (while many were blatantly obvious and felt like copy-paste descriptions straight from the games own character tutorials) did have some useful tips. However, I don't know how this made it past editing as there are quite a few typo's and the guide *frequently* and obviously contradicts itself. I found these contradictions in cooldown times, loadout suggestions, hunter tips, monster tips, everywhere. I was quite disappointed and despite there being quite a bit of good information, everything was always left in doubt and I found myself having the double-check everything. If you did actually buy this guide, use your wits to derive their meaning and your own strategy, because someone was seriously barely awake while attempting to edit this.

Overall, it is more of a beginners field guide than a strategy guide, filled with 70% information you can find with a quick search on the internet, the Evolve homepage, or (an even better resource) the forums. If you were expecting specific map strategies for hunters or monsters, advice about hunter combinations or anything beyond just basic "this is how you play this character" information, save your money and go to youtube or the forums, where you will find professionals with much more information and strategy about this game.

Steyn's deep bass voice was heard in the passage:
"Come, Jack, come along, dog! Are you coming with your master?"
The terrier gave a loud, glad bark and came rushing madly down the stairs, till he seemed to be tumbling over his own paws.
"Oh, that voice of Steyn's!" Ottilie hissed between her teeth angrily and turned a number of pages of her novel.

Read it but don't buy it.
By Stranger
Louis Marie-Anne Couperus (1863-1923) was a major Dutch literary writer, and I think this is one of his best books, written in 1918. It is a thriller featuring two very old people who harbour a terrible secret from the time they lived in the Dutch East Indies, many decades ago. But the shame and scandal can no longer be contained when their grandchildren get married.
Alas I can't comment on the quality of this old translation (1919), I read this book in Dutch. But I do know that THIS TRANSLATION IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN AND AVAILABLE FOR FREE AT GUTENBERG, also with a "dynamic table of contents". I don't see any real improvement over the Gutenberg edition, I think the paragraph layout is slightly better, but It takes some nerve asking $10,74 for that.
Other translated books that I can recommend are "The Hidden Force" ("De stille kracht", 1900) about the opposites of east and west in the Dutch East Indies; "The Books of Small Souls" (4 books, "De boeken der kleine zielen", 1901-1903) an in-depth psychological portrait of a well-to-do family in The Hague; and his debut novel "Eline Vere" ("Eline Vere", 1889) about the tragic breakdown of a 23 year young woman from a moneyed family. Another well-known (in The Netherlands) book is "Footsteps of Fate" ("Noodlot", 1890), a tragic love story, which is not one of my personal favorites, but Oscar Wilde loved it, and you may value his opinion more than mine. Except "Eline Vere" all are available at Gutenberg.

About the Author

Silas Toms

Silas Toms is a geospatial programmer and analyst with a love of geography, history, food, and sports. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and can't decide which side of the Bay is more beautiful. He received a bachelor's degree in Geography from Humboldt State University and is currently pursuing a master's degree in GIS at San Francisco State University. With a background in GIS analysis for city governments and environmental consulting, Silas loves the combination of GIS and Python for analysis automation and data manipulation. Working for Arini Geographics, Silas is helping governments understand how GIS can organize and simplify the management of infrastructure and the environment. This dual role as a programmer and analyst allows him to use Python and GIS to quickly produce geospatial data and tools. Combined with web mapping, these tools are transforming how governments work to serve the public. He also teaches workshops on ArcPy and web mapping at the City College of San Francisco, while hoping to one day finish his master's thesis. Silas has worked as a reviewer on the book Python Geospatial Analysis, Packt Publishing and is working on the book Python Geospatial Development, Packt Publishing to be published in 2015.

I also like that he talks about the PYTHONPATH
By Caleb Mackey
Silas Toms book on Arcpy and ArcGIS scripting is a very comprehensive introduction to Python in the ArcGIS environment. The book starts out with the basics of Python (data types, iteration, concepts). I also like that he talks about the PYTHONPATH, the Python interpreter and what happens under the hood when a script is ran. This is an important concept that seems to be often overlooked in ArcGIS Python scripting books.
After covering the basics and important background information, the book dives right into some of the ArcPy functionality with some of the geoprocessing tools and onto more advanced concepts such as cursors. One thing that I like before getting too deep into ArcGIS scripting, the author introduces some best practices and pushes the use of functions for code reusability. The author discusses how create and pass in parameters into custom functions and makes good use of doc strings.
After introducing cursors, the book covers an important concept that seems to be lacking in other ArcGIS books which is working with geometry objects. This can allow for creating features programmatically with full control and the class methods allow for powerful spatial analysis. There is another section on advanced geometry methods later in the book.
Next, the book moves into creating script tools. This is a really nice section that introduces ArcGIS’s built-in framework for turning Python scripts into fully functional toolbox tools with the same familiar GUI. Parameter types are discussed as well as how to pass the parameters from the user input via the script tool interface into the script for execution. One thing I feel that was missing from this section was information on the Tool Validator Class. This is a key piece of making script tools and I feel this section would be stronger if this piece were included.
Another important ArcGIS scripting element included in this book is map automation using the arcpy.mapping module. Important time saving concepts are covered here such as fixing broken data links, updating map surround elements, layers, and exporting maps. One important piece that these chapters drive home is the use of objects and Object Oriented Programming. This feeds in nicely to the next chapter on advanced geometry methods and wraps up how to use objects very nicely in my opinion. Creating custom Python packages are also discussed here which is helpful when maintaining your own custom libraries.
Chapter 11 covers some basic operations in the Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst extensions available in ArcGIS. This chapter shows how to check licenses in and out and some of the important concepts to understand before using the extensions (such as how to set up a Network Dataset). Practical examples are used to extract elevation information at bus stop locations.
The final chapter is a nice wrap up of all the content discussed in the book. The author also shows some miscellaneous tricks and tips that can make life easier in the ArcGIS scripting environment. At this point the author tells the reader that they are ready to explore more on their own. Overall, I think this book is an excellent place to start and even a good reference for seasoned Python programmers in an ArcGIS environment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Python scripting in ArcGIS!

Well written coverage of interesting analytical techniques
By Amazon Customer
As the prior 3 reviewers note, this is a useful and interesting book. I applaud its emphasis on spatial analysis/data manipulation rather than clever map production (although there's some of that too). I especially like the extended project involving stops on a San Francisco bus route and the extraction of census data for buffers around such points. Obviously with a little thought the techniques discussed can easily be translated to develop a trading-area analysis, as retail-store site analysts do, or to develop more sophisticated econometric or appraisal analyses than are commonly seen. The progression of topics, from automating/generalizing/pythonizing an ESRI workflow to more advanced python tasks is also nicely done.
Full disclosure: Packt invited me to review this work and provided the e-book I used.

Good first reference and supplementary material for those new to python and scripting with arcpy.
By Steven Porter
If you are a new hire to the GIS industry as a specialist or analyst, convince your boss to get you this book now. Learning how to automate workflows in arcgis can be some serious timesaving. (Or buy it yourself and don't tell them, then drink coffee and browse reddit all day instead). The author undertook an ambitious goal; try to write a book to teach python and teach arcpy. This book would be a good starting point for those completely new to using arcpy and python that are wishing to incorporate it into their ArcGIS workflows (because who likes using the ESRI user interfaces and clicking all day long). It is a great basic recipe book with sample scripts on various topics that combined with the ArcGIS help pages can help one jump-start a scripted workflow. For new learners, I would recommend learning some python basics on a website like codecadamy then starting this book so that you have many of the basics down first, as the introduction to python in this book is brief and fast. For those already competent with python and have tackled several arcpy scripts on your own, this book is not for you, but may still serve as reference material. If you are looking to learn some of the more advanced topics in writing arcgis tools, such as the python toolbox, python add-in, tool progress bars etc; these are not covered as they typically require more advanced python experience than the level this book seeks to introduce to its readers.

PROS: Good starting material. Good examples.
CONS: Python introduction is very brief, and may confuse new learners.

Full Disclosure: I was asked by packt publishing to review this book and they did provide me a free copy.

TLDR: Get the book if you want to get started automating some workflows in arcgis or want more coffee/reddit time.

Mark Twain extras

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Baby Board Books)

American writer Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain has given us some literary gems with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and his travel adventures in nineteenth-century Europe and to Australia and New Zealand. Here is is discussing telling rather than writing a story.

Humour, he says, is American while comic is English and witty is French. He follows this typically brilliant essay with examples of story telling and some intriguing experiences of mental telegraphy.

Good on you Dodo Press for specialising in rare and out-of-print books.

Mark Twain devotees will want to add this slim volume to their collection.

Very funny essays and stories
By Israel Drazin
Different editions of Twain's (1835-1910) writings contain different stories. This free book for amazon kindle users has five short essays and stories. Twain differentiates between humorous stories, which he says is an American invention, and comic stories, which he claims is English. There is also, he says, the witty story, which is French, but he does not discuss it in this volume. The humorous story depends on how it is told, the other two "on the matter."

The humorous story is told by word of mouth. It can go on and on with no apparent purpose other than to be funny. The joy is in the telling and it is an art to tell it well. He gives an example of a humorous story - The Wounded Soldier. He then gives an example of how a humorous story should be told - The Golden Arm. He shows by the dialect and by directions to the reader how it should be told. He emphasizes the importance of pauses and occasional noises just at the right time and with the right length.

Included in this volume is an essay telling of four incidences that he says happened to him. The title is Mental Telepathy Again. In each tale, another person who is far from him thinks something and he senses it. This essay is followed by The Invalid's Story. It is a very funny tale of how a healthy man became an invalid when he thought he was transporting the dead body of his friend to his parents when, because of a mix up, the crate contains guns and smelly limburger cheese.

Life in a Tank
By Robert Guttman
The birth of the tank:

"Life in a Tank" was written by Richard Haigh, who was, at the time, a Captain in the British Tank Corps and a recipient of the Military Cross. It is particularly recommended to those interested in military history in general, and armored vehicles in particular, because it describes the operation of the very first tanks ever deployed operationally by the military. The book was originally published in June of 1918, while World War I was still going on, and therefore constitutes a rather unique historical record of the birth of tank warfare.

That being said, it must be conceded that the tanks in which the author and his comrades "lived" were very from the modern conception of a tank. Based upon the description provided by the author, their "Willies" can only have been the British Mk. IV Tanks, of which some 1,200 were built between 1916 and 1918. They were not the fast, agile, efficient turret-armed tanks of today, nor even those of the "Blitzkrieg" warfare of World War II. In fact, the Mk. IV Tank was more akin to the machines described in H.G. Wells' pre-World War I story, "The Land Ironclads". For example, the Mk. IV Tank required four men simply to drive it: one in command, one to operate the throttle and gears, and two more to steer. Consequently, it must have been rather more like operating a submarine than what we now think of as driving a tank, save for the fact that, unlike a submarine, the commander of the Mk. IV Tank didn't even have recourse to a periscope with which to see out!

The sort of mobile armored warfare we normally think of today, as established by the likes of Guderian, Rommel, Montgomery and Patton, was a long way in the future when "Life in a Tank" was written. World War I was pretty much a static affair, a stalemate of opposing lines of trenches. The tanks were intended as a means of breaking the stalemate by assisting the infantry in punching through the enemy's trench lines. The tanks were designed for the purpose of overcoming obstacles rather than for speed. They were not fast and, indeed, had no need to be, because they were not intended to move any faster than the advancing infantry who accompanied them. In fact, the maximum speed of the Mk. IV Tank was a blistering 4 MPH. That was probably just as well because the tank's chassis also lacked any sort of suspension system, so the ride comfort experienced by the tank's 8-man crew must have been terrible!

Despite it's historical interest, at bottom, "Life in a Tank" is clearly a work of propaganda. That is hardly surprising, considering the fact that the book was actually written during the war. The author's prose style tends to run rather along the lines of the boy's adventure magazines of the period (The Rover Boys in their Tank). In addition, the author's views on World War I, and war in general, seem quaintly outdated, and even a little grotesque. Nevertheless, the book is worthwhile as a unique first-hand account of the very earliest days of tank warfare.

Tanks for the memories
By United Motor
Ever wondered what it's like to live in a tank (the military type)? Then this book is for you! It's a little outdated, being published long ago, probably before WWII, but not much has changed about being inside a steel box with caterpillar treads. The book is filled with continuous action, mostly from those endless tracks. You will find it riveting, as tanks were in those days before cast and welded steel armor. You'll get a blast from it!

Really liked this book from the standpoint of the inner workings of the machines. Didnt really care for the last part of the book but the history more than made up for it.
